What separates this book from any other book on weight loss that I've read, is that Dr. Piazza comes at the weight loss dilemma from a neurological perspective, thereby giving the reader a wonderful understanding of the mechanics of the human body. It might sound complicated, but it's written in a conversational and easily accessible way, so that anyone can understand the principles behind it all. There are also tips on eating properly, exercise, and the like (what would a good weight loss book be without these?); but the core of the book is about how easy it is to alter your life and achieve your weight loss goals. I'll definitely be recommending this book to anyone I know who's struggling with fad diets and other such nonsense. If you're SERIOUS about losing weight, this is the book for you. No More Excuses! Breakthrough Thinking for Real Weight Loss [Illustrated] (Paperback) Review
I wanted to read this book because I have just finished losing 45 pounds (with a few more to go), but found myself not being very motivated to exercise.A recent physical revealed that the weight loss had done great things for my cholesterol, blood pressure and other vital indicators . . . but my doctor thinks I need to do some upper body work.But I find it hard to get started with exercise.
No More Excuses! focuses on a simple concept:If you eat fewer calories and burn more calories, you will lose weight.The book then moves on to helping you reorganize your life so you will make eating the right foods and exercising regularly a priority.I found those parts of the book to be excellent.For people who have an easy time losing weight when they focus on it, this book will be very helpful.
The book is weak on its diet advice, however.Beyond cutting calories, you are told to stick to "low fat."That's good as far as it goes.I used to be able to lose weight that way, too.But after 53, it didn't work any more.I could diet on low fat and exercise until the cows came home and not much happened.
The South Beach Diet was a revelation for me.I had often either avoided high glycemic foods or high fat foods, but never both at the same time.The South Beach Diet has you do both.The weight melted off me faster and easier than ever.I realized that even when I ate healthy foods (such as carrots and nectarines) I was eating high glycemic foods.So I had my insulin levels all messed up so that I couldn't burn fat very well.So if you are having trouble losing weight even with a restricted diet and exercise, the right diet does matter . . . in spite of what this book suggests.
As for exercise, the book is strangely weak in that area.You are advised to have a gym instructor set up a program for you or to get a personal trainer.The last time I had a gym instructor help me, the person didn't know anything about what I wanted to train for.I called a dozen personal trainers, and they didn't know anything either.So you probably need a book that helps you decide "what" exercise to do to supplement this as well.
With those two caveats, this book is a welcome addition to the literature for how to control weight while juggling all those professional and family balls in the air.

The 3-Hour Diet Cookbook [Paperback] Review
I am not at this time following his 3 hour diet but I do like the concept. The recipes in this cookbook are so good and healthy! I have been making them for my family and they are turning out to be big hits even my picky eater husband likes the tortilla pizzas ( my favorites so far) and the fruit parfait for dessert instead of fattening junk foods. Also a big bonus is that the recipes are so easy and usually the ingredient lists are pretty short and the recipes themselves are very easy to make. No strange ingredients, I found all of them in my regular grocery store and he focuses on fresh ingredients that are full of flavor without alot of fat (the good, healthy fats are used). I have celiac disease and have been able to substite my gluten free bread items quite easily! This is turning out to be my most used cookbook!

The most useful parts of Dr. Nierenberg's book, for me, were "Hunger is your friend" and "Eating more to eat less."The idea of eating "by the clock" is ingrained in me, but based on the book's "keys," I now make every effort to eat only when I actually feel hungry. And I find that smaller portions satisfy me, too.When I go out to eat, I order from the kid's menu when I can, or my husband and I share meals or I just take it home without feeling I have to finish in the restaurant.Per the book's recommendations, I keep up my exercise routine and I've lost weight!The book's straightforward, clear style makes it easy to understand and easier to implement.

Very thought provoking. No magic fixes or 'secret formulas' -- just getting to the root of the matter within. I liked the question about "Would a thin person eat that?" Of course, they would! The big difference is "Would a thin person eat this NOW, and THIS MUCH!" Honest answers will product honest results. I was sitting across from a thin co-worker at a company outing when a package of big cookies was passed our way. My old paradigm said "They are free, they taste good, everyone is alloted at least one etc." So,I took one. My thin co-worker said "No thanks, I'm good." After all, we had just finished lunch. THAT'S the difference......

I found this book to be a great summary of Stavros' no nonsense way to live healthy and fit.No crazy diets, gimmicks, gadgets or marathon workout sessions just effective fitness information and a healthy dose of advice that has helped his clients lose weight permanently by changing the way they view their lifestyle. One of my favorite parts of the book is where Stavros discusses the amount of time you actually need to workout each week to stay fit and lose weight (1 hour+ workouts multiple times a week are not really feasible for real-world working people who are not movie stars).Another part I thought was really helpful (and lacking in most other material I've seen) are the "mental exercises" to keep yourself motivated and excited about getting fit and staying there.This is definitely not an unbiased review because I have known Stavros for many years and can personally attest to the fact that his program works: it is a simple and effective program that anyone can use.

The Good Carbohydrate Revolution: A Proven Program for Low-Maintenance Weight Loss and Optimum Health (Paperback) Review
Think of this book as a combination of Dr. Dean Ornish's book, "Eat More, Weigh Less, " "Sugar Busters!," and "Turn Off the Fat Genes" based on the latest research for controlling insulin levels, cholesterol, fat, and weight.
One of the strengths of the book is that the eating plan is quite flexible in terms of what you eat, when and how much.You are also given instructions for how to adjust your eating depending on how much animal protein and dairy products you choose to consume.Another strength is that the recipes take some pretty mundane sounding dishes and turn them into much tastier (and healthy) versions.
As someone who is very interested in Dr. Peter D'Adamo's work on blood types, I noticed that the advice here will fit those with type A blood very well, type B blood reasonably well, and type O blood less well.If you combine the perspectives of this book and Live Right 4 Your Type, I think you will have greatly improved your health, weight, and sense of well-being.
What's the down side?Well, you will have to buy and eat a lot of different foods than you do now.The book does a good job of describing different ways to make the transition.Within a few weeks, your food tastes will change and you will enjoy this diet.
I thought the biggest down side was that you'll pretty much have to give up on eating food from most restaurants.So, if you are like me and are often away from home, you'll have to carry food with you that you have prepared in advance.That's a pretty good idea anyway, and something that I have been doing more and more of.But it will be time-consuming, so something else will have to give in your life.Television, perhaps?Or remastered videos of 1950s comedies?
I am often asked my estimate of how costly a way of eating will be.I don't think this one will be extremely expensive, unless you decide to gorge only on the most expensive fruits and vegetables.You will save some money because you be eating out less, eating less processed food, and reducing your consumption of meat, poultry and dairy products.If you really like brown rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and nonfat refried beans, your budget will be safe.I happen to like those foods, so I was encouraged.
How do we know this works?Well, the advice here has been put in practice by the author for the last 15 years for his patients in Hawaii.The book also draws on important scientific studies of the average results of making changes in diet and exercise.

This is a beautiful book in design and content. I bought the book under the title "Recovering Compulsive Overeater". The book will be my companion to Overeaters Anonymous "For Today." It is profound. It is joyous. It speaks of the trials and the hardwon recovering. The glow is here. Thank you for your service and hard work to put together these splendid meditations.

The Ultimate Metabolism Diet: Eat Right for Your Metabolic Type [Paperback] Review
Wow...since posting my review there have been a lot of "planted" reviews coached by Dr. Rigden. PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW. IT WILL GIVE YOU THE ACTUAL DETAILS OF THIS BOOK AND WHY NOT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON IT.
I had very high hopes for this book. Afterall, the author actually has the credentials to write on this subject! He's not just an M.D., but one of only 15 Fellows of the American Bariatric Society in 50 years. And he really sounds as if he's offering something new and different and EFFECTIVE in the introduction and early pages.
First, he offers screening questionnaires to determine the area or areas of your metabolic dysfunction, which he calls "switched metabolism." They screen for (1) carbohydrate sensitivity, (2) metabolic syndrome, (3) hormonal imbalances, (4) food hypersensitivity, and (5) liver detoxification. I already knew I have metabolic syndrome, hormonal imbalances, and that my liver needs a little support, so it was no big news to find that the screening questionnaires simply confirmed all that. If you are young or perhaps new to the world of how hormones and the metabolism process differs from person to person and impacts one's health, you MIGHT get a little information from going through these few pages of the book. Otherwise, my guess is that you are probably not going to discover anything you didn't already know about yourself.
Chapter 2 was especially disappointing to me. So far, all you've done is read the intro, and gone through the screening questionnaires, and then he suddenly veers from his course of information and asks you to sign a personal weight loss contract. It reads: My weight today is ___. My goal weight in 4 weeks is ___. My goal weight in 12 weeks is ___. My goal weight in 6 months is ___. My goal weight in 1 year is ___. blah blah bah. He's given NO information about what might be a reasonable goal for someone whose body has been resistive to every weight loss effort you've ever tried, and you've tried a lot!This contract is laughable and bogus and has absolutely no place in this book, in my opinion. He then has you list ten reasons why you want to lose weight. Like we've never done this exercise before, right? And then the chapter finishes with general dieting advice we've gotten from every diet book we've ever read: remove all "danger" foods from your house, plan your meals, eat slowly, write down what you eat, ask yourself "why do I want to eat?" before you eat, and then what he believes is the utmost in wisdom--be patient, persistent, plan ahead, think positively, and perspire, aka focus and do the work. Yeah, those are so so helpful and enlightening and oh my goodness I've just never ever thought of those being key to successful weight loss before. NOT!
In my opinion, Chapter 2 shouldn't even be in his book.
Chapter 3 addresses carbohydrate sensitivity in a little more detail, although frankly, not really much. There are other authors who have done a far better job of explaining carb sensitivity than he does. He offers many "case studies" to illustrate how his techniques work, but frankly, they aren't helpful. His suggested treatment for carb sensitivity? Soy protein powder meal replacement program (replaces breakfast and lunch daily) and snacks and an evening meal of caveman/cavewoman eating (aka low carb/good carb). You follow this until you've lost 10 percent of your weight, and then you switch over to a low glycemic-index diet, aka a modified mediterranean diet. And he recommends supplements.
While he indicates that there is some controversy about soy and its role in cancer, he believes there is sufficient evidence to make soy safe to ingest. For the most part, he simply asks us to take his word for it. My largest disappointment here is that he never addresses the larger concern about soy I've been reading in the research, and that is that soy actuallySLOWS DOWN metabolism. Why risk further slowing down an already impaired metabolism by consuming this soy protein meal replacement powder? There are other protein powder choices, and I think he should've been more forthcoming about other options. I smell a possible connection between him and the maker of this soy powder.....
His information on the caveman/cavewoman diet and the low glycemic-load diet is scant. But that's because there's just not all that many foods you get to eat. And his recommendation is to follow the low glycemic-load diet for the rest of your life. It is very easy to find food guidelines for these types of diet all over the internet or in books that do far more jsutice to the subject that this book does.
Chapter 4 addresses metabolic syndrome, and isn't much different from Chapter 3--a glossing over of metabolic syndrome, more useless case studies about his patients, and then comes his suggested treatment:The caveman/cavewoman diet (which includes the same soy protein powder meal replacement for breakfast daily) until you've lost 10 percent of your weight, and then you switch over to a low glycemic-index diet, aka a modified mediterranean diet. And he recommends supplements, exercising, and drinking water. And his recommendation is to follow the low glycemic-load diet for the rest of your life.
Sound familiar? But wait, there's more.
Chapter 5 addresses hormonal imbalances, especially thyroid, estrogen dominance, and PCOS. To implement any of his recommendations here, you have to find a physician willing to prescribe thyroid medication and/or natural progesterone. There aren't that many docs out there willing to do this, especially if you are one of those under-diagnosed with hypothyroid, which you most likely are. More of his case studies which are neither enlightening nor helpful. And once again his treatment strategies: more of the soy protein powder replacement meal and following the low-glycemic-load diet.
Overall, a very unhelpful chapter with very little substantive information.
Chapter 6 moves on to address food hypersensitivities.The suggested program: nothing more then the usual elimination diet, gradually re-introducing various foods in order to find those that may cause you problems. A lengthy and daunting process which one may find nearly impossible to do. And other authors have addresses thisconcern, food hypersensitivity, far better than this book does. My recommendation is that if you score high enough on his screening questionnaire to indicate that food hypersensitivity may be a problem for you, then go get better books about the subject.
Chapter 7 addresses the final metabolic challenge: impaired liver detoxification. His recommendations for detoxing your liver are the standard--go on an elimination diet for 4 weeks, reintroduce foods slowly, (note that these steps are identical to that follwed in the previous chapter for food allergies/hypersensitivities), and consume a detox beverage such as ultraclear by the same company that makes the soy protein powder he pushes for all his other plans. The food you can eat during this month-long torture is miniscule, unsatisfying, and would cause Ghandi to lose weight. His suggestion to "choose a 4-week period for the program in which you do not plan to travel, have company, or participate in stressful events" is absolutely laughable!
And of course what diet book would be complete without the chapter on emotional eating, dealing with stress, and self-image assessment. A handful of recipes in the back, and that's it. That's his ULTIMATE metabolism diet.
Don't waste your money on this one, folks. Get it from your local library if you must, but there is absolutely nothing new in this book, and it's very clear that he is out to make money and fame for himself, and little else. I also wonder about his connection to the company whose products he pushes for almost every treatment recommendation he makes?????

The Pocket Diet & Recipe Book: Perfect Portion Control That Works! [Paperback] Review
I wouldn't suggest this book as a "diet" per se. It has calorie recommendations, portion control, and lots of useful information, but it does rely heavily on one's fondness for pita bread. And anyone can get bored with eating the same thing day after day, and this is basically a sandwich-based diet using one type of bread.
As a cookbook though, especially for someone who's single and/or on the go a lot or who just doesn't cook much, this book really shines. There's things I never thought of putting in a pita pocket (and why I just don't know), and there's a surprising amount of creativity using a handful of common ingredients. I keep it with my cookbooks rather than diet/nutrition, and so far, it's been fun to use.

I am in a group that uses this diet method.It is a good, easy to understand diet that emphasizes not eating high glycemic foods that make you hungry in just a few hours.A balanced low-glycemic diet is recommended.All foods are all listed in a RED/YELLOW/GREEN list.It does not list calories, just portions.All dieting is painful, especially at first.Our group of 8 meets once a week (starting Sep 09) and has lost 7.6% of our original weight or 176 pounds toward our initial goal of 10% wt loss.It works and is not a fad diet like most.You must also exercise along with this diet--i.e. walk as much as you can as often as you can.A good book.CB

As the title indicates, these are quickie recipes that can be made in minutes, though they throw in a few more involved meals at the end. Be clear, these are tasty and healthful recipes aimed at the fitness-oriented individual. You don't have to necessarily be following the Abs Diet plan per se, but anyone who has adopted a weightlifting + aerobics exercise program with a high-protein, controlled-carb and controlled-fat diet will find this book has what you're looking for, especially if you want meals you can make quickly and stick into a tupperware container to eat throughout the day.
Most of the recipes are not fancy, and many are quite obvious, being nothing more than various ways to combine ingredients to make a dozen versions of sandwiches, salads, breakfast omelettes, smoothies, etc. But as simple as they are, some of the combos just wouldn't have occurred to me on my own, but when I tried them, they were quite tasty! (Example: Brown rice mixed with black beans, heat, put a fried egg on top, and spoon some salsa over it. Simple, easy, and a great filling breakfast that can easily be put in a plastic container and microwaved at the office.)
This isn't a cookbook for entertaining guests with or preparing meals for a potluck. The recipes aren't fancy and someone not dedicated to eating and living like this might find them a bit plain. I find them nourishing and filling and they've added to my reportoire, so when I prepare the 5-6 meals I eat every day, I always have a decent variety to choose from. The "Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide" also contains a lot of good recipes to choose from. This book is a good companion to that one.

The Abs Diet Eat Right Every Time Guide (Paperback) Review
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend this book.If you are overweight, and want to do something about it, this book has the information you need to change your life for good.Know though that this is not a "diet" - it is a dietary strategy.A way of life.One which - if you embrace it, will change your life forever in very positive ways.
My personal testimony:I am 6' 2" tall and 35 years old. My weight has been over 250lbs for the last few years.But I have a large frame, and my body type is primarily mesomorphic, with a strong endomorphic influence.This means I have a good deal of muscle mass and definition, but have also always carried a significant amount of fat. Anyway, my BMI was about 31 and my body fat was over 30%.
That is technically obese, though I neither felt nor looked it.I would tell people how much I weighed, and they never would believe me.
So I carried the fat well, thus I didn't particularly care. I idly thought about doing something about it.I bought the main book of this series (to which this book is a supplement) last year, but it sat on my shelf collecting dust.
Until two months ago.On March 2nd 2006, I went to the doctor's for my checkup.I got on the scale.It tipped.263lbs.Then my blood pressure: 200/100.That's right.200/100.Nice round numbers.I've had slightly high blood pressure for years.Always 140/80 or less.Nothing too dramatic.This new reading blew my mind.I wasn't scared, just astonished.I had it taken again that afternoon, and it came out at 169/90.I was officially suffering from hypertension.
The old clich?d wake-up call.I had been eating a lot.Not poorly, I hardly ever eat junk or processed food.But richly.Lots of cheese, desserts, bread, salt, sugar, second and third portions... no breakfasts.And wine.And gin & tonic.Andbourbon.All very yummy stuff.
I was - to put it bluntly - a fat gluttonous hypertensive lush.
I went home that evening and resolved to change. I took the main book of this series off the shelf, and read it. I went out and bought a small notebook, which I christened my food journal.I recorded everything I put in my mouth for about a month.I began simultaneously phasing the principles in this book into my life.
I eat five small meals a day, 3 or at the most 4 hours apart.Each & every food choice is a deliberate one.I make the best possible choices I can, every time, knowing that each thing I put in my mouth is making me healthier and leaner.I've stopped drinking alcohol & most other caloried drinks all together.I bought a blender and have begun drinking smoothies.I eat loads of good, substantive food. Tasty food.Whole grains.Vegetables, berries & fruit.Nuts.Lean proteins- fish, chicken & beef jerky.Healthy fats like olive oil and avocado paste.
And my bodyfat has simply melted - metabolized - inexorably away. Very gracefully. I counted calories, protein, carb & fat percentages for a few weeks (which this plan does not recommend, but I felt was important for me, just so I could get a sense of what I was eating) - but did no formal exercise at all.I have been active - walking a lot (I always take stairs, do a lot of yard & house work, etc.) but have not gone out of my way to exert myself. No running.No lifting. None.
It's been just over two months on the plan. I've bought a very good scale and blood pressure monitor, and have kept daily track of my progress.
Today is May 11th, 2006.I weighed in this morning at 231 lbs.That's a loss of 32lbs, to date. My blood pressure is 127/80.It hasn't been over - or even really near 140/90 - in weeks.I'm still losing fat at a rate of about two pounds a week.I can feel my body burning it away. I feel so much better - almost euphoric at times. And I'm eating all the time. Several small portions of simple but tasty food, every three hours or so. I drink water and lightly sweetened iced tea all day. I am rarely hungry, and when I am it means it is time to eat.
I am not doing this for aesthetic reasons, but people have noticed - particularly girls - and I got to admit it's gratifying. When I finally cut my six-pack - which I expect to do by the around the end of the summer, with a little exercise - it is going to be sweet. I still have about 30lbs of fat to lose.
So, this is the deal: if you want to know how burn fat without destroying your metabolism and losing muscle, buy this series. It will require significant permanent changes in your life, probably, but the results will more than compensate.You will like what you eat, you won't starve, and you will lose fat and become healthier. It is win win win, requiring just a bit of self-awareness & discipline. Anybody can do it.
This book - almost a booklet, really - is the core of the plan.It details the dietary rules, and provides very quick & simple, good tasting recipes. I would say that you could buy this, and not bother with the other, main book and you'd have all the information you need. This book has far more recipes, and all the essential nutrition information.It's also much smaller, and so very portable - easily slipped into a glove compartment, book bag, purse, or even pocket.What it doesn't have is the workout plan.But the workout is secondary.Nutrition is over 80% of the game here.
Upshot:Buy them both, but this is to my mind the more helpful of the two.
So go, learn the principles & eat with deliberation.You will not regret it.Good luck.
Addendum: November 13, 2006:
After a summer of partial laxity during which I hovered in the low 230's (never exercising, and thus not cutting that six pack) I re- engaged fully in August, began sporadically exercising and lost another fifteen pounds, weighing in now c. 218 lbs.I've been lifting three days a week the last three weeks- the differance has been pretty immediate & dramatic.
This plan really is simple, and easy.Like I say, simple good choices, consistently made.Your reality today is just an accumulation of millions of choices.Make 90% of them well, and you will get good results.Forgive yourself for your failures, choose to be decisively slack, re- affirm your goals, and you will progress.

My personal testimony:I am 6' 2" tall and 35 years old. My weight has been over 250lbs for the last few years.But I have a large frame, and my body type is primarily mesomorphic, with a strong endomorphic influence.This means I have a good deal of muscle mass and definition, but have also always carried a significant amount of fat. Anyway, my BMI was about 31 and my body fat was over 30%.
That is technically obese, though I neither felt nor looked it.I would tell people how much I weighed, and they never would believe me.
So I carried the fat well, thus I didn't particularly care. I idly thought about doing something about it.I bought the main book of this series (to which this book is a supplement) last year, but it sat on my shelf collecting dust.
Until two months ago.On March 2nd 2006, I went to the doctor's for my checkup.I got on the scale.It tipped.263lbs.Then my blood pressure: 200/100.That's right.200/100.Nice round numbers.I've had slightly high blood pressure for years.Always 140/80 or less.Nothing too dramatic.This new reading blew my mind.I wasn't scared, just astonished.I had it taken again that afternoon, and it came out at 169/90.I was officially suffering from hypertension.
The old clich?d wake-up call.I had been eating a lot.Not poorly, I hardly ever eat junk or processed food.But richly.Lots of cheese, desserts, bread, salt, sugar, second and third portions... no breakfasts.And wine.And gin & tonic.Andbourbon.All very yummy stuff.
I was - to put it bluntly - a fat gluttonous hypertensive lush.
I went home that evening and resolved to change. I took the main book of this series off the shelf, and read it. I went out and bought a small notebook, which I christened my food journal.I recorded everything I put in my mouth for about a month.I began simultaneously phasing the principles in this book into my life.
I eat five small meals a day, 3 or at the most 4 hours apart.Each & every food choice is a deliberate one.I make the best possible choices I can, every time, knowing that each thing I put in my mouth is making me healthier and leaner.I've stopped drinking alcohol & most other caloried drinks all together.I bought a blender and have begun drinking smoothies.I eat loads of good, substantive food. Tasty food.Whole grains.Vegetables, berries & fruit.Nuts.Lean proteins- fish, chicken & beef jerky.Healthy fats like olive oil and avocado paste.
And my bodyfat has simply melted - metabolized - inexorably away. Very gracefully. I counted calories, protein, carb & fat percentages for a few weeks (which this plan does not recommend, but I felt was important for me, just so I could get a sense of what I was eating) - but did no formal exercise at all.I have been active - walking a lot (I always take stairs, do a lot of yard & house work, etc.) but have not gone out of my way to exert myself. No running.No lifting. None.
It's been just over two months on the plan. I've bought a very good scale and blood pressure monitor, and have kept daily track of my progress.
Today is May 11th, 2006.I weighed in this morning at 231 lbs.That's a loss of 32lbs, to date. My blood pressure is 127/80.It hasn't been over - or even really near 140/90 - in weeks.I'm still losing fat at a rate of about two pounds a week.I can feel my body burning it away. I feel so much better - almost euphoric at times. And I'm eating all the time. Several small portions of simple but tasty food, every three hours or so. I drink water and lightly sweetened iced tea all day. I am rarely hungry, and when I am it means it is time to eat.
I am not doing this for aesthetic reasons, but people have noticed - particularly girls - and I got to admit it's gratifying. When I finally cut my six-pack - which I expect to do by the around the end of the summer, with a little exercise - it is going to be sweet. I still have about 30lbs of fat to lose.
So, this is the deal: if you want to know how burn fat without destroying your metabolism and losing muscle, buy this series. It will require significant permanent changes in your life, probably, but the results will more than compensate.You will like what you eat, you won't starve, and you will lose fat and become healthier. It is win win win, requiring just a bit of self-awareness & discipline. Anybody can do it.
This book - almost a booklet, really - is the core of the plan.It details the dietary rules, and provides very quick & simple, good tasting recipes. I would say that you could buy this, and not bother with the other, main book and you'd have all the information you need. This book has far more recipes, and all the essential nutrition information.It's also much smaller, and so very portable - easily slipped into a glove compartment, book bag, purse, or even pocket.What it doesn't have is the workout plan.But the workout is secondary.Nutrition is over 80% of the game here.
Upshot:Buy them both, but this is to my mind the more helpful of the two.
So go, learn the principles & eat with deliberation.You will not regret it.Good luck.
Addendum: November 13, 2006:
After a summer of partial laxity during which I hovered in the low 230's (never exercising, and thus not cutting that six pack) I re- engaged fully in August, began sporadically exercising and lost another fifteen pounds, weighing in now c. 218 lbs.I've been lifting three days a week the last three weeks- the differance has been pretty immediate & dramatic.
This plan really is simple, and easy.Like I say, simple good choices, consistently made.Your reality today is just an accumulation of millions of choices.Make 90% of them well, and you will get good results.Forgive yourself for your failures, choose to be decisively slack, re- affirm your goals, and you will progress.

We bought the hard cover version of this wonderful book in 1989.We have worn it to a frazzle, with pages of our favorite recipes now falling out of the book.First, it scientifically lures you into a mind set of bettereating habits, and then it gives you excellent recipes by which to getthere.We highly recommend it!!!

The book is more than just a weight loss book!I found it was a great motivation to help cope with other issues I was facing. Very insightful, easy reading and I can relate to many of the authors circumstances. The recipes are an added bonus.I wish it had more information about calories, carbs and such but the author did say that she wasn't a dietitian. This is a book I will keep on my shelf. Any time I doubt myself and my ability to do something I will quickly reread it's pages to reaffirm my ability to succeed.Including losing weight AND keeping it off.

The Calcium Key: The Revolutionary Diet Discovery That Will Help You Lose Weight Faster (Hardcover) Review
There are 24 reviews of "The Calcium Key" diet as I write this review. Sadly not one of them tells you about the diet, because if it did I would not have purchased the book.
"The Calcium Key" is a well researched (though the studies were sponsored by the dairy industry), well written book on how calcium when added to your diet can help you lose weight.
The authors obviously spent a lot of time writing the text which is very easy to understand and clarifys the calcium-weight loss connection.
Putting aside any self serving interests that perhaps the author benefited from the support of the dairy industry and the results were skewed, I decided to trust in the authors expertise and focus on the plan.
Sadly the plan is a labor intensive one that very few people will be willing and able to follow long term. It involves as the author puts it, writing down every thing you eat and using an exchange system.
The author lists calorie levels and how many exchanges you can eat for your level (similar to the old Weight Watcher progam).
For example if you are on 1200 calories (and the author teaches you how to determine your caloric level) you get 3 breads, 2 meats, 3 veggies, 3 fruits, 3 dairy and 3 fats.
3 graham cracker squares would equal 1 bread group. 1 cup milk would be a dairy. Sounds simple enough...but then you get into mixed foods like a butterfinger candy bar and you have 1 bread group, 2 fruit (dont ask) and 2 fats.
In order to keep it all straight you must keep a diary and write it all down.
Now that said, I think the author is on to something when he suggests adding dairy to your diet. The combination of protein and fat is much more satiating than say a slice of cake or a cookie.
But very few people want to micromanage their diets the way this book proposes.
So though it introduces the calcium weight loss connection, the actual diet is not one that many will succeed with. Just try adding calcium rich foods to your diet 3 times per day and don't increase calories.
