Food for Life: How the New Four Food Groups Can Save Your Life (Paperback) Review

Food for Life: How the New Four Food Groups Can Save Your LifeI have purchased over a dozen copies of this book for my family and friends, and finally browsed the reviews today and was shocked to see any negative feedback. So for those considering the book, remember the negative reviews were written by meat-lovers that in no way plan to give it up.

I've read at least twenty or so nutrition books and this is my favorite of them all. It's simple to read, easy to understand, and very complete. It encourages a vegeterian diet for the sole purpose of having a healthy life, rather than giving all the statisitics on animal cruelty.

It deconstructs all the myths (i.e. people need tons of protein, and vegetarians do not get enough iron) and gives tons of yummy recipes in addition to informing you of all the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet.

It reinforces the fact that doctors do not fix you until you are broken. My brother is in med school and I asked him how many nutrition classes he was required to take..... the answer was none. Why not learn how to prevent diseases rather than fix them afterwards? Why eat a meat-based diet, take your cholesterol pill and destroy your liver, when you can avoid eating cholesterol at all? Why eat excessive simple carbohydrates and sugars and rely on an insulin shot every day?

I've bought copies for nearly every member in my family over the past three years, but sadly they don't bother reading it until they are required to take insulin, or they find a lump in their breast, or they find their cholesterol is off the charts. I believe you have a duty to your loved ones to keep your body healthy so you can be here for them as long as possible, and this book can show you how. For more info, look into pcrm.org

Also, my sincerest thank you to Dr. Barnard for caring enough to spend time to teach interested people the proper way to eat.

The Schwarzbein Principle, The Program: Losing Weight the Healthy Way (Paperback) Review

The Schwarzbein Principle, The Program: Losing Weight the Healthy WayImagine a world where you no longer view it through weight or food obsession eyes.I have entered such a world because of the steps to good health presented in The Schwarzbein Program. This was not an overnight success for me.I practiced and practiced the steps, mastering them one at a time, one day at a time, on my own unique schedule.I have learned the palate can change over time adjusting to being without sugar and man made carbohydrates.I never thought I could live without bread, ice cream or cake.I proved myself wrong. In fact I am living a fuller, healthier and rested life without these foods.I no longer over exercise and I pay attention to my stress, because I know I am the most important person in my life. And, without my health I can not add to the lives of others around me.

When I began my journey I did gain weight, 15 pounds, because my system was so damaged from years of sugar addiction and starvation dieting. And, even though I was gaining weight, I felt appreciably better.Encouraged by feeling healthier, a year and half later just of few of the miraculous changes are, I have currently lost 20 pounds, my skin is luminescent, the mental fog has disappeared, my painful menstruation is nonexistence and my emotional life is calmer.I am feeling free in my own body.

I was brave enough to walk away from conventional dieting wisdom and courageous to venture into the unknown, to trust a woman who had the clinical background to support her hypothesis about the correct way the body needs to be fed.I promise you, this is it; this program will end your suffering.

I highly suggest you find a nutritionist or a doctor who is familiar with her work to help you with the program. As I believe you will need a partner to guide you with the changes you will need to make and advise you on using the correct supplementation your body may need.

Think about what your life will look like tomorrow when food and weight is no longer the enemy.I have been given this opportunity to find out and it better than anything I imagined.

The Martini Diet: The Self-Indulgent Way to a Thinner, More Fabulous You! (Hardcover) Review

The Martini Diet: The Self-Indulgent Way to a Thinner, More Fabulous YouDon't be fooled by the title, "The Martini Diet" by Jennifer "Gin" Sander, is not a version of the drinking man's diet. Instead it's a truly delcious way to lose weight!

The Martini Diet consists of 3 very simple rules: Rule #1 - Eat only the very best. Rule #2 - Eat somewhat less of the very best and Rule #3 - Eat the very best only at mealtimes (ie no snacking). According to Gin if you follow these rules the pounds will drop.

Personally I have tried a number of methods to lose the baby weight I gained (and baby is 14) from questionable supplements to lo-fat foods to food combining to Weight Watchers. I would get very hyped on these plans only to discover that none of it worked LONG TERM. You see, I like my comforts and that includes chocolate, wine, good bread, etc. So I just couldn't stick to programs that didn't include these goodies or that encouraged eating fake foods that made my appetite increase!

Gin's book teaches balancing pleasure with moderation. If you give up the fake, tacky foods like processed cheese whiz, and diet nutrition bars and lo-fat fake cookies etc. and if you eat real food in modest portions and don't snack much if at all, you can lose weight. And you will LOVE the process.

My dinner last night was a simple piece of grilled chicken, corn on the cob (no, you dont have to give up starches..just eat them in modest portions) and asparagus. Washed down with a glass of zin and chased by a piece of rich dark chocolate. What could be better?

I love Gin's book because of the refreshing way she writes. She entreats you to become a food snob and turn your nose up at the twinkies and boxed scalloped potatoes. You are too good for that. I love the way Gin tells you to treasure yourself and indulge in the very best.

However, there are a few things that bothered me about the book. The first is though Gin implores you to eat "REAL FOOD" she confesses she has a penchant for Slim-fast. Though Gin tells you to "LOVE YOUR FOOD" she then shares that she enjoys Slim-fast because, "it gets that morning meal out of the way". Huh? What happened to enjoying your food? She also includes recipes at the back of the book and a few include questionable ingredients like soda pop.

Despite the few inconsistencies, I give the book top ratings because of the core message. Gin's message is to "Spoil Yourself Thin". This will help you get out of the weight loss means depriviation and punishment mode. She suggests you treat yourself to the best food. When you get a craving, pamper yourself by beautifying yourself instead of eating. You participate in exercise you love instead of killing yourself at workouts you hate.

By now you may be wondering why the title, "The Martini Diet". This is because Gin suggests you indulge each day in a glass of wine or martini for the health benefits and pure enjoyment. She also gives simple techniques to figure out your portions sizes by using a martini glass. Nifty!

Gin admits she is not a scientist or doctor. She is just sharing what works for her. So if you read around the inconsistencies and stick to the core of what she is sharingyou will have fun with the book. Gin wants you to enjoy your life and losing weight can be a pleasure if you follow her tips.

Product Description:
There's a yet another new Harvard study out that shows that regular moderate drinking can lower your risk of heart attack. This study, which followed 40,000 men for twelve years, found out that those who drank one or two alcoholic drinks 5 to 7 days a week lowered their risk of heart attack 30 percent. (Women also benefit but they must weigh those benefits against the risk of breast cancer. Still, far more women die of heart disease than breast cancer.) Similar studies show that caffeine is good for you, as is red meat and salmon and red wine and anything dipped in olive oil.
The truth is, good food and drink is good for you. So why deprive yourself? Think of the most self-indulgent people you know the ones who never miss their morning lattes and their evening martinis, dine at the best restaurants, hire personal trainers, indulge in weekly massages and facials. Odds are they're as thin as they are spoiled. This book will uncover the reasons why some of the most indulgent people are also the healthiest (like the French Paradox, which explored why French people can eat so much rich food and drink so much wine and still be thin and have low rates of heart disease).
So spoil yourself thin with The Martini Diet. Inside you'll find all the ways in which you can indulge yourself and get into shape at the same time. Not only will you live longer, you'll have a heck of a lot more fun.

Waistland: The R/evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis [Hardcover] Review

Waistland: The R/evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis [Hardcover]Waistland's main premise is that you can't just "trust your instincts" or "listen to your body" in the current food environment. Barrett goes on a hunt into prehistory to show how our bodies evolved in a world where salt, sugar, and fat were scarce and desirable. Now we live in a word where those substances are not only plentiful, but in which images of them are beamed at us constantly. Waistland describes how refined foods affect us similarly to addictive drugs.
Barrett says we need to learn to "listen to our intellect" before our brains evolve back to the minimum needed to locate the Twinkies in the grocery aisle. She advocates radical change for those seeking to eat healthier and lose weight. Simply ordering the smaller size of fries or eating desert twice a week is actually harder physically in terms triggering hunger signals than eliminating them entirely: more painful in the first few days but ultimately easier to maintain because insulin, glucose, and leptin levels normalize.
Barrett also trashes the "too busy to time to eat healthy" argument. She has a half joking, half serious "recipe"section that points out you can dump tuna over baby spinach or walk out of a 7-11 with nuts and fruit faster than you can get through the line at a burger chain. For those with "no time to exercise," she reminds us the average American watches more than 3 hours of TV a day.
She also has suggestions for society to change the whole food environment. She points out that short of banning foods--which she does advocate for transfats--we can start by reversing crazy policies like subsidizing the growing of corn and sugar and instead setting financial incentives to favor healthy vegetables.
Waistland is full of research culled form academic sources you haven't seen in popular books before. But it's also an extremely entertaining read, with witty observations and delightful New Yorker cartoons. Whether you're just trying to understand our society's health problems or wanting to get yourself back on track with sane eating and exercise, this is the smartest, most readable book out there on the topic.

Product Description:
Harvard psychologist Deirdre Barrett tackles the obesity and fitness crisis from an evolutionary standpoint. In the modern jungle of burgers, couches, and remote controls, obesity is an enormous and growing epidemic. Weight-loss books and diet gurus urge us to "listen to our bodies," but our instincts are designed for the African savannah, not food courts. The sugary and fatty foods that we, as hunter-gatherers, are programmed to forage used to be hard to come by. Now they're as close as the vending machine down the hall.

Radical changes are necessary and, fortunately, are biologically easier than small or gradual changes in diet. Barrett tells us how to reprogram our bodies, break food addictions, and ignore our attraction to "supernormal stimuli"—artificial creations that appeal to our instincts more than the natural objects they mimic. Barrett delves into scientific research—from animal ethology to evolution—to show the disastrous direction in which our instincts have led us, and how, using our intellect, we can get back on course. 50 illustrations.

The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (Hardcover) Review

The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American AppetiteThis is a well-written, easily understandable, interesting book on the very serious subject of overeating. The book is broken into six parts with relatively small chapters ranging in size from approximately three pages to eleven pages in length with many in the four to seven page range. The first part, for example, has 13 chapters so there is much information but it is presented in a way which flows well together.

When I got this book I was interested in the subject matter but I was worried that the book would be boring or so technical that I would lose interest. I read this book in two days and it has changed my approach to eating.

Part One of the book, Sugar, Fat, Salt, talks about why people eat and overeat. It looks at the physical as well as psychological aspects of overeating.

Part Two of the book (my favorite), The Food Industry, gives specific examples of how restaurants and the food industry contribute to the problem by creating food that people want to eat but is not healthy. For instance I never new that bread had so much salt because it takes away the bitter taste of the flour and brings up the flavor. The author also addresses how nutrition information on packaging is manipulated by the food industry. For instance if a food contains more sugar than any other ingredient it must go first on the list but if you use a number of sources of sugar like brown sugar, corn syrup and fructose each is listed individually and goes lower on the list.

Part Three, Conditioned Hypereating Emerges, talks about how we get trapped into an overeating pattern. It references numerous studies and explores whether overeating is nature, nurture or both.

Part Four, The Theory of Treatment, talks about theoretical ways people can break the overeating habit.

Part Five, Food Rehab, offers practical ways individuals can stop overeating. The advice is great.

Part Six, The End Of Overeating, talks about the challenges ahead to end overeating. While it will not be easy, each individual has the power to end his or her overeating despite roadblocks created by the food industry or our own physical or mental makeup.

This is a great book that has started me thinking differently about food. It is well written and the best on the subject I have ever read.

Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet [Hardcover] Review

Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet [Hardcover]Eric Bailey outdoes himself in "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet", 150 pgs, Greenwood ebooks.

If Doctors, Healthcare and the Fitness industries ever wondered why African Americans are not coming in droves, this book is a Must Read!

By simply overlaying Eurpean Ethnic ideals onto Black Americans, a disservice is being done to both ethnicities.Eric Bailey has a catch-phrase that should be on the tip of everyone's tongue in the aformentioned industries:"Culturally Appropriate".

In "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America", the author covers relevant background material to the growing obesity problem in the African American communities.Citing historical, familial, religous, peer and cultural reasons, there is evidence that a different approach should be taken with discussing weight loss, eating habits, exercise routines and social interactions between African Americans.

Bailey doesn't just lecture to White Doctors and African Americans in this timely book.He takes the time to explain why African Americans view Obesity and Food differently than European Americans. He also explains why African Americans should open up to their doctors, take the time to explain their cultural viewpoints in regards to body type, culture, food preparation.

Never once did I feel talked down to in reading this book, and I'm certain no one who will read "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America" will feel offended.

Bailey takes us on a cultural train ride through the eyes of African Amercians in regards to how they view weight loss and food through their community and how it differs from what is called 'mainstream america'.The last chapter is about what Eric Bailey terms "THE NEW BLACK CULTURAL DIET AND LIFESTYLE".He asks that each African American ask themselves six timely questions, honestly and openly about themselves, their culture, their family, their food, their reality and their body.

A sure winner in the fight against obesity for Eric Bailey.
