Food for Life: How the New Four Food Groups Can Save Your Life (Paperback) Review

Food for Life: How the New Four Food Groups Can Save Your LifeI have purchased over a dozen copies of this book for my family and friends, and finally browsed the reviews today and was shocked to see any negative feedback. So for those considering the book, remember the negative reviews were written by meat-lovers that in no way plan to give it up.

I've read at least twenty or so nutrition books and this is my favorite of them all. It's simple to read, easy to understand, and very complete. It encourages a vegeterian diet for the sole purpose of having a healthy life, rather than giving all the statisitics on animal cruelty.

It deconstructs all the myths (i.e. people need tons of protein, and vegetarians do not get enough iron) and gives tons of yummy recipes in addition to informing you of all the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet.

It reinforces the fact that doctors do not fix you until you are broken. My brother is in med school and I asked him how many nutrition classes he was required to take..... the answer was none. Why not learn how to prevent diseases rather than fix them afterwards? Why eat a meat-based diet, take your cholesterol pill and destroy your liver, when you can avoid eating cholesterol at all? Why eat excessive simple carbohydrates and sugars and rely on an insulin shot every day?

I've bought copies for nearly every member in my family over the past three years, but sadly they don't bother reading it until they are required to take insulin, or they find a lump in their breast, or they find their cholesterol is off the charts. I believe you have a duty to your loved ones to keep your body healthy so you can be here for them as long as possible, and this book can show you how. For more info, look into pcrm.org

Also, my sincerest thank you to Dr. Barnard for caring enough to spend time to teach interested people the proper way to eat.

The Corinne T. Netzer Carbohydrate Dieter's Diary [Paperback] Review

The Corinne T. Netzer Carbohydrate Dieter's Diary [Paperback]This is a slim, handy, journal that really helps make carb counting easy. Instead of recording what you eat on tiny scraps of paper you may lose easily or using complicated journals, this book simplifies the process.
The first page has space for you to record your goals including, current and desired weight, measurements, and current and desired exercise.
Then the book begins with Day 1 where you will find spaces to include the date, your weight and general comments. Each meal is listed in order of breakfast, lunch, dinner and then snacks.
Next to where you record what you ate there is a space to fill in the carbs.
At the end of each week there is a progress report where you can fill in your accomplishments and goals for the following week.
The journal covers 16 full weeks so its easy to look back and see the progress or mis-steps you have made. And the spiral bound journal lays flat, so it's easy to write in.
The back of the journal includes a list of common foods and their carb counts.
Though the journal is a bit large for smaller pocketbooks (8"tall by 4" wide), it will fit in a larger bag or a briefcase easily.
Another nice touch are the little hints and tips that appear on some of the pages, to help you make your low carbohydrate diet a success. Sample tip, " When you want a snack reach for tasty low-carb cheese. Wrap up some slices of your favorite kind and bring them along to the movies in place of popcorn."
The book is a super nice tool to help you track your progress!

A Fresh Start: Accelerate Fat Loss and Restore Youthful Vitality (Paperback) Review

A Fresh Start: Accelerate Fat Loss and Restore Youthful VitalityI purchased this book after embarking on Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat to Live" plan because I desperately needed to change my cooking style. This book is approximately 50% recipes and 50% lifestyle changes and the reasons for those changes. The principles of this plan are also very similar to the book above, and to "Stop the Inflammation Now" by Dr. Fleming.I have reviewed both of those books as well, if you are curious.

The gist of the plan is a vegan diet, adding exercise, eliminating stress and being grateful.Common sense ideas that the author tries to tie together by referencing studies and specific client examples.

The book is full on tidbits of information regarding the health benefits of specific foods as they appear in recipes. If you are well versed in nutrition this information is very basic. However, if you could use a nutrition primer this is a reasonable one.

My biggest criticism of the book is the recurrent emphasis on religion and God.I did not expect a religious tie in to a diet book.

Overall the book is full of information and recipes and serves the purpose that I purchased it for.I give it 5 stars for the recipe content alone. The remainder of the book I would give 4 stars.Since I purchased the book specifically for the recipes the overall rating is a 5.

Turn Off the Fat Genes: The Revolutionary Guide to Losing Weight (Paperback) Review

Turn Off the Fat Genes: The Revolutionary Guide to Losing WeightThis could have been a much shorter book; on dozens of occasions, I found myself thinking, "Oh, come on; skip the theory, and let's cut to the chase! Enough obscure biochemistry already, just tell me what to eat, and we'll be all done!"
Well, OK; I'm impatient. And too much theory is always preferable to too little. The diet recommendations are basically the sound, healthy diet recommendations we've been getting for years: eat whole grains, more fruit, more vegetables, less fat, less sugar, and exercise more. The presentation is unique, in that Dr. Barnard suggests that this diet will somehow 'trick' our genes into making us slim. Well, this diet would make anyone slim, regardless of their genetic structure. Perhaps the book sheds light on why what happens, happens; but the actual recommendations are nothing new. I deducted one point for this reason alone; taking the same, tired old idea and putting a new wrapper on it doesn't make it a new idea. This book is not about do it yourself gene therapy, despite the sexy title; it's a vegetarian diet, and that's it.
One thing that I did like was the included meal planner; Similarly, I also appreciated the many, many recipes that make up the last half of the book. It's nice to start a diet with much of the hard work - the diet planning - already done for you. There's also a sourcing guide, if some of the raw materials prove hard to find. Something that is absent, is a discussion of vitamin and mineral supplements (although Dr. Barnard does mention the importance of B12). Multivitamins are a contentious issue; many feel that 'you can get all the nutrition you need with a knife and fork', while still others feel that concentrated multivitamins are not well absorbed, and tend to pass through the system without providing benefit. Personally, I believe high quality multivitamins are important; but aside from suggesting the consumption of any common, inexpensivemultivitamin, Dr. Barnard makes no suggestions, one way or the other.
Dr. Barnard also does not mention alcohol consumption in his book; nor does he mention artificial sweetener use. However, on websites that he has participated in creating, he warns against alcohol consumption (cancer risk).I guess that, after making the major change to a vegetarian diet, Dr. Barnard felt we might need a drink. He might well be right.
The diet does not include specific portions; indeed, Dr. Barnard suggests that you let hunger be your guide. He does provide a 'rule of thumb' that you should consume 10 calories daily for each pound of your target weight; that is, if you want to wind up at 150 pounds, you should consume 1,500 calories daily. But this is only a guide, not an absolute.Indeed, he warns against eating too little, and suggests that we should eat second helpings if we want them. There's no reason to go hungry on this diet.
The diet is largely a subset of a vegetarian diet in nature, but Dr. Barnard does not present it as such; his presentation seems to be coming entirely from a 'whats best for you' approach, which winds up being essentially a vegetarian diet (minus high fat items, like nuts). The motivation seems to be based purely on health, not ethics. However, it is difficult to determine to what degree his health beliefs have been influenced by his moral stance; Dr. Barnard is a strong supporter of a strict vegetarian diet, which means no consumption of animal flesh or animal products such as eggs, milk, or butter. He is also an outspoken critic of using animals for medical testing purposes.
In reviewing the reviews of his earlier works, people tend to fall into three categories: Those who felt Dr. Barnard was trying to trick them into vegetarianism, and were very angry as a result; those who were confused, because the philosophy of this book runs counter to high protein/low carbo books, such as Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution; and those who had actually tried the diet, and experienced dramatic weight loss.It is worthwhile noting that, while there have been many criticisms of Dr. Barnard, there have been NO reviews in which someone actually followed the diet, and failed to lose weight.Say what you will of it; the diet does appear to deliver the goods, while providing good nutrition from a solid scientific base.
(Yes, it's vegetarian.Get over it.)
While I lack the medical background to either validate or challenge his statements, I can tell you that the actual recommendations are largely in keeping with what you've been getting from everyone from the National Institute of Health to your local physician.(By comparison, high protein/low carbohydrate diets are pretty much universally condemned by government health agencies, universities, local health boards, and both doctors and dietitians around the world.)Whole grain foods, less processed food, less fat, less salt, less sugar, more fruits and vegetables, more exercise... sure it'll work. It's even safe. If you're looking for a sensible, sane, balanced approach to weight loss that is both informative and supportive, you might want to check this book out.
After all, it's gotta be better than eating a hundred grapefruit.

Product Description:
Breakthrough genetic research indicates that genes are not just on/off switches for characteristics we can't control (like gender or eye color). Some genes, including those that shape our bodies, actually adapt to outside influences. In Turn Off the Fat Genes, Dr. Neal Barnard draws on this cutting-edge research to create a revolutionary new program to help your body sculpt away excess pounds by activating thin genes and suppressing fat ones. The heart of Dr. Barnard's book is a three-week gene-control program specifically designed to help you identify your gene types by asking questions like:

What's your genetic taste type?
Do you strongly dislike Brussels sprouts? Are some desserts too sweet to eat?
Is black coffee undrinkable?

If you answered yes to all three questions you're a genetic bitter "taster" or
"supertaster" (as opposed to a "nontaster"). On page 24 you'll find out how to work with your genetic taste type.

Is your appetite becoming harder to control?
Have diets made your appetite unpredictable? If so, your hunger-suppressing leptin gene might need a tune-up. (See page 59.)

Do you gain weight more easily than your friends?
Do you have difficulty losing weight no matter what you do? If so, the genes that set your metabolism might need a boost. (See page 71.)

Do you hate exercise?
If so, your genes may have overloaded you with sluggish Type II muscle cells. Learn how to change them on page 100.

Once we understand how the genes that control shape can be influenced, we can enjoy virtually the same effortless weight control as naturally thin people and reveal the healthy, vital body that nature intended us to have.

Eat For Health: Lose Weight, Keep It Off, Look Younger, Live Longer (2 book set) [Hardcover] Review

Eat For Health: Lose Weight, Keep It Off, Look Younger, Live Longer [Hardcover]I first read Joel Fuhrman, M.D.'s book "Eat To Live" May 2007 after my father died of heart disease. I have always been a vegetarian but I have always been overweight as well. I had 50 extra pounds to lose and my main goal has always been health over looks. I learned from his book that being a Vegan also means no processed foods or animal products of any kind. I love that book and lost those 50 pounds that I had never been able to lose before age 42.

After a year living the "Eat To Live" plan I read "Eat For Health" twice. The differences are huge. The biggest difference is that Dr. Fuhrman takes us Americans through 4 stages of gradual eating changes by doing some food exercises and stepping down animal products and processed foods. The only foods he asks us to eliminate immediately are all cheese, butter and transfats. I can see why he changed his point-of-view to gradually add vegetables, fruits and beans to our diets because otherwise it can be a shock to our typical way of eating and most people will reject it as they did in his book, "Eat To Live."

I find I need the extreme approach right off the starting line and I have learned to love vegetables and fruits. I feel that his gradual steps to eliminate meat and processed foods and grains was backpedaling from his original book, but on the other hand I fully understand why he did it and that was to reach as many people to change their eating habits as possible and so in this content, it makes perfect sense. Before May 2007 I was a vegan who rarely ate fruits and vegetables thinking cereal and popcorn was healthy, now I thrive on those foods and have kept my weight down to near ideal with no effort at all.

I have always loved reading nutrition books and before Joel Fuhrman, M.D. I thought Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Oz were the best, but now I see that they both focus far too heavily on whole grains, which Dr. Fuhrman says to eat very little of because they are not dense in nutrition. The rule of this plan is to eat foods highest on the nutrient index and avoid foods with little nutritional value all-together.

Here's a list of the foods he says we can eat from his book in unlimited quantities, and these are the only foods I eat myself. This plan is the only book that made perfect sense to me and I knew in my core that this is the only choice I would make for optimal health and wellness.

Product Description:
Hundreds of medical doctors utilize Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health system in their medical practice. It is because all diets fail, for vast majority, in the long-run, unless there is an adequate understanding of nutrient density of food and how low-nutrient-eating leads to food cravings, food addictions and fuels overeating behavior. Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health is a medical breakthrough because without this fascinating information you are essentially destined to be struggling with dieting forever, compelled to consume excess calories, and not be able to comfortable and permanently maintain a lighter, healthier weight. Dr. Fuhrman is the founder of the high nutrient eating style and a pioneer in the growing field of nutritional medicine. Now with Eat For Health, (a two-book set) Dr. Fuhrman has taken his bestselling Eat To Live book a gigantic step further, he has made his approach nation-friendly, now everyone can easily do it. "Dr. Fuhrman s nutritional approach to the prevention and management of chronic disease is the most significant medical advance I have seen in my career as a physician. " John V. Forrest, M.D. Professor UCSD Medical School Thousands who have recovered from their medical problems have been calling Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health program a medical miracle. We are not just talking about the people who have lost their excess weight after failing for years on one diet after another, but diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, asthma, autoimmune illnesses (including lupus) and headaches have simply melted away. Published medical research already documents this as the most effective weight loss method ever recorded in medical history. There was an average two year weight loss of 53 pounds. Most importantly they kept the weight off. This complete two-book set actually teaches you how to prefer a health-promoting diet-style over a disease-promoting diet. The hallmark of healthy eating is to consume more foods that contain a high nutrient density and less food with a low nutrient density. To make it easy, Dr. Fuhrman has scored thousands of foods so that in each of the 4 phases, the nutrient density of the suggested menus increases. The outcome is that when you eat enough high nutrient foods you can reverse most medical problems without drugs. If diets never worked for you in the past you will now understand why and you will be motivated to lose your excess weight and get well again. Eat For Health can save your life. Dr. Fuhrman s MANDI food and meal scoring system (patent pending) lets you know exactly how healthy your diet is. You can choose your own level of nutritional excellence and you can move forward to a higher level at your own pace when you are ready or you can pump it up to phase four to get maximal weight loss and therapeutic effect to reverse disease.
