When I first looked at this book, my initial thought was "Oh no, not another book on dieting!"However, when I flipped through the pages to see if I would review it or not I was pleasantly surprised that indeed it was a "pharmacy" and not another dieting book.In fact, "The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy" may be the first and the only book about weight loss supplements that is based on proven and researched scientific facts, and on top of that, written by a medical doctor.

One of the authors, Harry Preuss, MD, is not only a professor at Georgetown Medical Center but he has dietary supplement and nutraceutical research centers that focus on obesity, heart disease and the ever growing insulin resistance.The scientific references in this book not only address the research conducted by Preuss but also by the Mayo Clinic and many European centers.

The contents of the book focus on: fat busters, insulin regulators, carbohydrate inhibitors, fat blockers, appetite suppressors as well as muscle builders.Each section thoroughly explains, in lay terms, the issue, the natural substance e.g. green tea, chromium, etc., possible illnesses if obesity isn't regulated and how to use the product.

One of the important factors I believe the authors included in "The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy" is their chapter 12 - The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy Supplement Program: Designing the Approach That's Right for You.After reading the book and understanding the natural supplements that are available, the authors' first suggestion is to partner up with a professional, and more importantly reiterate that the supplements alone will not substitute a healthy diet and exercise.Chapter 12 addresses the supplements in a condensed version and suggests considerations as well as gives case studies.Of all the case studies the authors present, it is highly unlikely that an interested reader wouldn't find themselves in one of them.

One of the best pieces of information covered in the book was explaining the components of green tea that actually provides the real benefit - polyphenols and antioxidants.

-The benefits/harms of caffeine

The bottom line is, a person loses weight with a proper diet and exercise but green tea can slightly increase your metabolism and provide additional health benefits so drinking it is a good idea, but as can be expected, you can't eat Cheeseburgers 3 times a day and lose weight just by drinking Green Tea.

Death to Diabetes: The Six Stages of Type 2 Diabetes Control & ReversalIt is interesting that two of the most helpful books on diabetes that I have found - this one and "Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars" by Dr. Bernstein - were both written by diabetics and fellow engineers rather than by doctors. However, Dr. Bernstein is an engineer who went to medical school and became a doctor. Often it seems that those non-patients from the medical profession are stubbornly wed to what they have been taught is the truth about this disease regardless of outcome. Sometimes I wonder if it is the result of traditional medical training, based more on memorization than systematic problem solving, that causes this frustrating result.

In this book, the author goes over how he went from someone who went into a diabetic coma with a blood glucose of 1337 (80-120 is normal) who had been subsisting on processed food to someone who has slimmed down, learned to eat right, and now has a blood sugar in the 80-110 range. He talks about how the foods diabetics are not discouraged to eat by the medical profession such as potatoes, bananas, cereal, and many dairy products cause the blood sugar to spike and worsen glucose control. Instead, he recommends that you snack on veggies such as brussel sprouts. He even talks about his "power breakfast" - brussel sprouts with olive oil, salmon, and water. He determined what worked for him the same as Dr. Bernstein - by meticulous record keeping of his blood glucose after ingesting various foods.

The author also talks about other issues that will be more familiar such as exercise and record keeping. Also, he incorporates a spiritual component into his healing process that includes prayer and inspirational quotes. Finally, he talks about various nutritional supplements such as cinnamon, gymnema sylvestre, and bitter melon, and how each might be helpful in blood glucose control.

The reason I am only giving this book four stars is that, although everyone will be helped by reading this book and following its advice, not everyone will be, for all intents and purposes, "cured" of their diabetic condition. For one thing, the author is a man, and diabetes in women often faces the additional complications of insulin reacting with the female hormones to make the condition more difficult to treat. Then there are those of us with polyglandular failure where more than one of the endocrine systems fails - for example, hypothyroidism combined with diabetes greatly complicates the treatment of both conditions. Also, there are drug-induced cases of diabetes such as those caused by thiazide diuretics, necessary to limit blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals. However, if yours is a case where there is not a strong genetic component or complicating factors, and your lifestyle is the greatly dominating cause of the disease, you might be able to mimic the author's truly tremendous outcome.

I started working this plan when very little information was available about it May of 2009. I did it when there was no book and only limited information available via the internet.Basically I took the 15 sugar 6 carb idea from Jorge and ran with it. So far I have lost 60 lbs on the Belly Fat Cure and I plan to lose 30 more to reach my goal.Those people writing negative reviews just want to open a book and have the weight fall off their bodies. You have to take control and want this for yourself. Read the book for insight and understanding and not just to be led around like a puppet.

Second, I live in a rural area with no Whole Foods Market or anything around and have to travel far for a health food store or order online to get some of the items that are in book. But not all of them.Jorge just gives the healthiest options, but you can make substitutions. If something is not available in your area, use something else. Most of us don't know that these healthier products exist.We let the mainstream dictate what we are putting in our bodies and feeding to our children.What we should be doing instead of attacking Jorge is to demand that these healthier options be made more readily available to us in our local markets. A lot of what he proposes include no artificial sweetners because of their alleged negative affects.If this isn't a concern of yours then make a substitution that includes artificial sweetners. I'm sure Jorge wouldn't advocate this but I have to admit that I do use some of the products that are on his Belly Bad List.I make the food and the plan work for me.For instance, Jorge doesn't like sugar free puddings that you can buy on the shelf because of the artificial sweetners.I try to avoid the artificial sweetners as much as I can but if I want a chocolate pudding then I'll have one.No biggie. Personal choice, hello?

I do not have a ton of money and was actually unemployed when I started this way of eating last summer.Yes, I think of it as a way of eating - not a diet.This is how I live now.So to those who claim its expensive that's not true.It doesn't have to be.The recipes in the book are simple and great tasting.They include normal foods that you probably already eat now. Its just about making it in a healthier way and making better choices.Things you would never think you could eat while losing weight.You do not feel deprived at all.It really is a mindset change more than anything.

I'm shocked and amazed at the people who complain about it being full of recipes, menu plans, and product evaluations?? Really this has me baffled.Isn't that what we all need anyway - the meat and potatoes of the thing? While Jorge explains an overview of the science behind why the plan works, do you really want a book full of technical jargon and trials and studies?If you google Jorge Cruise or take a look at some of his Youtube videos....he has interviews on there with experts that explain more indepth about the dangers of sugar.This is serious business, folks.Check them out.

I really hope that people will try this way of eating and don't judge the book based on the negative reviews.Its a shame because I know that I rely heavily on amazon reviews for nearly everything but this is one instance where I can truly say the negative reviewers have it all wrong.

On to the exercise....I'm more of a couch potato, but oddly enough I enjoyed the stretching exercises, even found them relaxing. The more strenuous exercises...well, I'm still working on those. I see this more as a slow progression, one that will hopefully develop into a good habit. So, how much weight have I lost? 4.5 pounds in ten days. Not bad for a former junk food eating couch potato.

I've never met her in person, but I found that Kim is helpful and kind to those who email her.I found out about this book on her website and couldn't wait to read it...got it the first day it was avail and couldn't lay it down until I was finished.

Her book is brutally honest and I applaud her for speaking so frankly about her struggles with dieting and obesity.It's the kind of book that will inspire you to keeping going, or inspire you to get started on a life changing plan for eating if you're struggling or have given up.

At some points in the book I was in tears, and at others, laughing.Her story is heartbreaking but ends in a final triumph.Her favorite line seems to be "now it's your turn".She tries to inspire others to achieve the seemingly impossible. She lost 212 lbs, kept it off and is now a very successful Weight Watchers leader.

A VERY good book for anyone, but especially those of us who need to lose weight.I HIGHLY recommend it.Also, she includes recipes.A bonus to the book!

Family Circle Eat What You Love & Lose: Quick and Easy Diet Recipes from Our Test Kitchen [Paperback]I have had this book for 3 weeks now. I absolutely love this book! The diet plan and the story line for the 6 people who lost weight on this plan were great. But the one thing you will treasure this book for are those recipies! I have been using a similar eating plan on my own (3 meals and 2 snacks that equal about 1500 calories) but I was really struggling with great tasing dinners that didnt bump me over my calories allowed for dinner. I must admit that I primarily have used the dinner recipies, however I did enjoy every breakfast, lunch, and desert recipie I made as well. There are excellent versions of "comfort" foods, as well as new twists and alternative ways to prepare your standard 350 calorie meal or snacks. The ingredients are things that you can find in your local market as well. I havent eaten the same meal twice yet, although many are sure to be repeated.
The best compliment I can give to this book is that it is teaching me new recipies that I WANT to eat. I feel like Im noton a diet - but on to a new way of preparing and enjoying what I eat. I really recommend this book to any one interested in loosing weight. I have already lost 8 pounds and I feel like its really gone for good this time. This book is definitely for people who love to cook and want to learn how to do it in a way that is healthy and satisfying. It helped me to break out of my old cooking habits that were keeping my dinners way too fattening and my portion sizes way too big. You can use the diet plan in the book as a guide and tailor it to your life, what you like, and what works for you.
The only drawback was that alot of the recipies were for 6 servings so I did have to do a little math to scale it to my family. hehe But that wasnt a big price to pay when the result was a healthy and great tasting dinner that kept me on my target calories.

Staying Power : Maintaining Your Low-Carb Weight Loss for GoodI bought this because I'm finally getting close to my weight loss goal. Yes, I used Protein Power Life Plan for my weight loss and this book is geared towards low carbers, although I think almost anyone can use it.

It's a pretty simple book. There is an explanation of how you transition from a loosing phase to a maintaining phase, there are examples (taken from their practice) of how others have transitioned and there are meal plans and recipes. Most importantly tho, is that there is a section that allows 365 days of recording your meals, activities, etc.

Well written, easy to understand and great tool. A must for anyone trying to maintain a low carb lifestyle!!

The Solution: For Safe, Healthy, and Permanent Weight Loss [Paperback]This book received a positive review in a popular fitness magazine so I decided to check it out. It provides an approach that has allowed me to lose weight in a very personalized manner. It may not be for everyone since it is based on taking quiet time to getting to the heart of why you feel somehow compelled to eat when you aren't really hungry. This introspection takes many forms including writing, talking and thinking about your own deepest/toughest challenges in life.
I have lost 40 to 50 pounds several times in my life and am usually, in my head, on some sort restrictive diet that I seldom follow-through on. When I began this work I immediately lost 8 pounds and then stayed steady as I built up my ability to face things as they come. I have now started losing again in a way that is almost effortless because I am eating much more oftensimply because I am hungry or for the pleasure of something incredibly tasty but not because I am trying not to think about things that have made me uncomfortable/anxious during the day or in the past.
Before I bought this book I read the reviews here that said it was an expensive process but there is no organized support for this program in my area so my costs have not been that high.So far, I have spent around $200 for 6 months of materials ( journals, tapes, web site access) and one session of telephone coaching. It is worth it. I easily used to spend this much over a 6 month period on extra food.
The language used in the book can be a little off-putting ( e.g. the cures, tender morsels, hamburger sandwich) and the ideas are sometimes fairly complex, but if you are motivated and committed my own experience is that it really achieves results and helps provide a sense of balance in many aspects of daily life.

The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss FreedomI think that based on the numerous one-star reviews I read those checking the postings may be confused. So, as a long-time past student (11 years) whose curriculum has been in medical studies and clinical nutrition, here are a few facts to make it easier on you.
1) Most dieticians I have encountered in my life have neither been thin, nor obese. However, they have been overweight. Well, 9/10. It is a fallacy to believe that just because you know something, you will apply it. I tell you, many cardiologists emphasize the need for any physical activity, yet fall short of carrying out their own advice, just like many MDs are not shying away from alcohol consumption, low fat foods, and smoking, which they all know is wrong. So, saying that Dr. Phil is overweight and that as a result, he should not be writing about weight loss strategies is plain ignorant. He is 6'4" and weighs 240lbs. Now, he is, indeed, overweight. Someone of his stature based on the dietetic currents 16 from Ross Labs in Columbus Ohio (reference used in clinical nutrition) is considered overweight.
2) The title of the book reads "ULTIMATE WEIGHT SOLUTION: THE 7 KEYS TO WEIGHT LOSS FREEDOM". It is NOT passed as a diet book. And though you may read on and see people's main critique that they have not learned nothing new does not mean that it is bad. We all know we should be eating less. We all know we should be more active. We all know that fat is not great (though necessary to some extent). The real question is to figure out whether we are actually applying that wise wisdom? Well, are YOU? If not, maybe you just find it hard to do it with your stressful life, your busy occupations, your family responsibilities. And that is where this book comes in, because it hands over strategies for you to incorporate those skills in your life. Now, note also that he does not mean to make you skinny or thin. He wants you to lose weight that you are suffering from, no more, no less!
3) Many claim that he is not an MD. And indeed, he's not! However psychology is the study of how the mind responds to certain stimuli. While an MD (psychiatrist) is focusing on physiological changes, Dr. Phil approaches from a psychosocial front claiming that by changing a few things in life, the emotions that lead you to eat less can be isolated and dealt with step by step.
4) about complaints that there is no weight loss plan, here is a newsflash! That is exactly what has made the USA as fat as it is. Lasting weight loss takes time and dedication. There is no ONE weight loss plan that fits all. Whoever tells you that is a fallacy. You may want to believe it because it is easier to deal with than to look at one's life and feel like a failure. Think about that too. You have to come up with your own needs based on your lifestyle, family life...
This being said, I don't deny that with some experience you can come to the same conclusions. However, I think that many people are stuck in a maze not knowing what to believe. This is information you can believe. It is important to eat less and encompass some physical activity. However, for the critic about the lack of physical activity that you may read in other postings, the person should have been a little more in tune with the fact that weight loss is the ultimate goal to prevent further cardiovascular diseases, diabetes diagnoses (type 2) skeletomuscular problems. Muscles weigh a lot. Dr. Phil's goal is to lose weight. Once you have got that one down, he tackles the physical activity. Remember, walking 5 times a week for 30 minutesallows you to lose 20 lbs without changing anything else in your diet. Now, I am sure it is not that hard to realize that a lot of people may be wondering where that 30 minute time frame is coming in. And that is where Dr. Phil comes in by showing you the strategies to allow such a routine to take place.

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever [Paperback]I purchased the original _Eat-Clean Diet_ book when it came out a few years ago, and used the principles in it to lose sixteen pounds (two dress sizes).Recently, I've been a little more lax in my eating, so I purchased this book last week to help motivate me to get back on track with my eating for the new year.

Before purchasing this newer edition, I was worried that it would be very similar to the first version of the book, but, as Reno explains, it contains over 100 pages of new text.While there are some chapters that are similar in both books (like chapters on the importance of drinking water and eating breakfast), there are a lot of new ideas.If you are trying to decide whether to purchase the older, original edition of this book or this one, I would recommend buying this one since it contains more recent information about nutritional studies.If, like me, you already own the original book, I think you'll still find the ideas in here useful and inspirational.

I find Reno to be very motivating, and, if you're struggling to lose weight, you will probably find her books really helpful.The idea behind clean eating is that you eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, without adding in extra sugar, chemicals, etc.Eating six meals a day ensures that you never go hungry, and you don't have to worry about calorie counting.

Another great feature of this book is that she includes a vegan meal plan in it.The first edition was very centered around meat, which made it difficult for me (as a lacto-ovo vegetarian) to see how I could incorporate all of her suggestions since I wasn't about to gnaw on a chicken breast as my morning snack.

Reno also focuses much more in this edition on the environmental effects that our food choices have, citing Michael Pollan's work and the principles of films like _Food, Inc._.Since I am concerned with environmental issues, I really liked this new focus on eating locally and sustainably.

This book also contains 50 new recipes.I have not tried any of them yet, but will be sure to update my review after I have tried a few.The inclusion of quite a few vegetarian recipes is another nice feature.

I first discovered Reno in _Oxygen_ fitness magazine, where she is a monthly columnist, and last year was happy to see that Robert Kennedy Publishing (the group that publishes Reno's book and _Oxygen_) began a new magazine called _Clean Eating_.If you want even more seasonal, healthy recipes and nutrition tips, I definitely recommend subscribing to it.Just be warned, however, that it contains a lot of ads promoting Reno's books -- to an annoying degree.If you can look past those ads, it makes a nice addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.
UPDATE ON 3/1/10:I've made a few of the recipes, and all of them have turned out to be really good!In my original review, I accidentally said that the book has over 15 new recipes, but it actually has 50 new ones.If you have the original version of this, you definitely don't *need* this newer version, but the updates and success stories make it a nice addition to my collection of health books.
