A Week in the Zone: A Quick Course in the Healthiest Diet for You (Paperback) Review

A Week in the Zone: A Quick Course in the Healthiest Diet for YouFinally, Barry Sears has gotten around to writing a "how-to" book on the Zone Diet. All of the previous books were somewhat technical, and aimed at medical professionals or personal trainers.
This book, hisfirst paperback, is written in a clear, concise and easy to understandstyle.By the end of the first 20 pages, you will have a good idea of whatthe Zone Diet is about, its benefits and how it works.
Then, the rest ofthe book gives Sears' simplest yet version of the diet (for example, instead of "40-30-30" the new restatement uses"1-2-3").
The Zone Diet, by the way, is primarily a healthdiet, although it is also effective for weight loss. The idea is to keepyour blood sugar and hormone levels as even as possible, by balancing whatyou eat in each meal. The result is a number of health benefits, especially in the areas of diabetes (demonstrated by a clinical study) andheart disease (Sears started the research due to the high mortality in hisown family tree), but also in other areas like allergies, joint pain, headaches, stomach acid, and many others, all of which are aggravated byour modern unnatural eating habits.
Unlike almost all other eating plans, this diet is based on an investigation of how food affects our bodies'mechanisms, and the result is simply better functioning.

Living the G.I. (Glycemic Index) Diet (Hardcover) Review

Living the G.I. DietI wanted to lose weight so badly that I was prepared to do anything to achieve it, except give up my favourite foods! Then I heard about the GI Diet and ordered the book right away. I found this book very easy to read while being packed with valuable nutritional information. I have never found a healthier more sensible and balanced diet anywhere! This is not just another diet but is really a new way of eating. Most diets fail because you feel deprived or you get tired of weighing or measuring or counting (grams or calories or points...)or you just know they are not healthy. The GI Diet has already made all the calculations for you. All foods are divided into three categories: Red Light, Yellow Light and Green Light (just like the traffic lights). Just eat what is on the Green Light List! (In most cases, as much as you want) The Glycemic Index measures the speed at which you digest food and convert it to glucose. Eating low GI foods causes foods to be digested slowly, leaving you feeling fuller, longer, not causing spikes in your blood sugar levels or causing your pancreas to secrete large amounts of insulin. On this diet, you do best if you eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day.
All the recipes included in the book, that I have tried, have been excellent! The Baked Chocolate Mousse, the rice pudding, and the granola bars alone, got me through the first few weeks. I especially like this diet because I have lost 50 pounds ( and my husband has lost 57) and because it promotes Good Health, not just weight loss.
I've lost weight on other diets before, but always regained the weight because I never really understood 'Maintenance'. This time I get it!
I finally understand how good food promotes health while preventing disease, while a poor diet, with lots of white flour, white sugar and processed foods, puts your health at risk. The biggest bonus of being on the GI Diet, is that after a few weeks, my cravings stopped! It was like breaking an addiction! (Chocolate was my drug of choice) Now my body only gets the best fuel, and my high blood pressure and cholesterol scores all fell into place!
If you are really ready to lose weight, if you want to get control of your eating habits, this is the best, easiest, healthiest way to do it.

Product Description:
The easiest diet going is now even easier--and tastier. Off to an explosive start, The G.I. Diet quickly landed on New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, and required five quick printings (for a total of 190,000 copies) to keep pace with demand after national publicity discovered the "Canadian miracle diet" (Woman's World). Now, continuing to build on the nutritional wisdom of the glycemic index, Rick Gallop follows up with the essential companion--a cookbook and strategy guide for living the G.I. Diet.

Organized around the simple, intuitive principle of green-, yellow-, and red-light foods--if you can follow a traffic light, you can follow this diet--Living the G.I. Diet gets right into the kitchen with 135 dishes that are as easy to prepare as they are unrecognizable as diet food. Grilled Pesto Salmon with Asparagus. Beef and Eggplant Chili. Garlic Shrimp Pasta. Thai Chicken Curry. Pork Tenderloin with Grainy Mustard and Chive Crust. Cinnamon French Toast. Florentine Frittata. And desserts: Baked Chocolate Mousse, Basmati Rice Pudding, Pecan Brownies--that's right, brownies.

In addition, the book spells out how to lose weight (Phase I) and maintain weight loss (Phase II); how to make G.I. eating a family affair; navigating holidays, restaurants, vacation eating; and exploring the psychological and emotional aspects of food and food cravings--everything you need to stay on this proven track.

The Easy GL Diet Handbook: Lose Weight with the Revolutionary Glycemic Load Program [Paperback] Review

The Easy GL Diet Handbook: Lose Weight with the Revolutionary Glycemic Load Program [Paperback]Please be aware of the word "handbook".This "book" was small--about 5x7 size.In searching for a reference to assist me in recording in my food diary, I thought this would do so.The foods are listed in five columns--the "food", the "GI value", the "amount of food in grams containing 50 grams of carbohydrates", then "carbohydrate per 100 grams of food" and then the "GL" column--not "one apple" or "1/3 c of rice", etc.So it was not much help to me.Most text's that I have viewed so far have GI/GL information for a food serving but it is very limited but this booklet's listed servings were indescript and not adaptable to everyday life. The booklet itself was in great condition and it was promptly delivered.

Product Description:
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a highly acclaimed route to weight loss, but it has one big drawback: GI values don't take portion sizes into account. Glycemic Load (GL) values ajust the GI score for real-world portions and thus give a more accurate measure of the way carbohydrates affect the body.

For example, fresh fruit seems like a healthier dessert than a Snickers candy bar, but, in fact, the GI score for apricots is 57, while a Snickers is only 55. This happens because the GI score is computed based on a serving of apricots that is over 7 times the size of the candy bar. When adjusted to the real-world serving size, the candy bar has a GL of 31, while the apricot's GL value is only 4.

Using these more accurate and sensible GL scores, the Easy GL Diet Handbook offers a plan for healthy weight loss and reduced risk of diabetes that is easier to follow and includes numerous foods that the Atkins, South Beach and GI diets wrongly consider "off limits."

The Glycemic-Load Diet: A powerful new program for losing weight and reversing insulin resistance [Paperback] Review

The Glycemic-Load Diet: A powerful new program for losing weight and reversing insulin resistance [Paperback]I have spent a lot of time reading and researching low carb diets. While this does not make me an expert, I have learned a lot over the years.I've studied Atkins, South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, Protein Power, and others.I've posted hundreds of messages upon bulliten boards discussing the best way to eat healthy, exercise and lose weight.

Rob Thompson's Glycemic Load Diet book takes the most effective parts of the various low carb and low starch diets and puts it together in a clear and concise manner. This book does not necessarily define a diet as it does describe a way of eating that is easy to follow and effective for weight loss.

The Glycemic Index ranks foods by their effects upon your blood sugar. However it is only the glycemic load that takes into account the serving size when measuring the effects of foods on our bodies.Rob Thompson's book explains the importance of glycemic load and how it can be used to ensure your blood sugar levels remain stable.

The simple fact is that most low carbohydrate plans go too far in restricting foods. This book simply advises that you refrain from eating starchy food such as breads, potatoes, and rice. The book advocates eating proteins, vegetables and fruits as staples of your meals and even gives practical advice on how to have dessert without sabatoging your blood sugar.

Who should read this book?Everyone.Literally everyone can benefit from the practical knowledge of the effects of various foods and how to temper them.Rob Thompson's advice is simple yet powerful:avoid foods that will make you fat, exercise at least once every 48 hours (walking for 40 minutes is ideal), and see how over time your body will become healthy. The weight will come off slowly but surely;anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds a week can be expected.

I am personally following this way of life and love how easy and satisfying it is to follow.Do yourself a favor and buy this book.It may not be magic, but it could save your life.

Product Description:

A cardiologist's revolutionary weight-loss plan that allows dieters to enjoy good carbs while still losing weightThe glycemic index has been the basis of many popular diets. But it doesn't take into account the serving sizes people actually eat and eliminates too many foods for dieters to stick with it. Now Dr. Robert Thompson's breakthrough program uses the glycemic load--the glycemic index adjusted for serving size--to take the GI a step forward. The glycemic load is a more accurate and effective tool in controlling weight and insulin resistance, allowing dieters to eat more foods while still burning fat, cutting cravings, and speeding up their metabolism. Safe, simple, and scientifically proven, it's the smartest weight-loss plan yet.

The Glycemic Index Diet For Dummies (Paperback) Review

The Glycemic Index Diet For DummiesI was told by my M.D. a few months ago that I would benefit from a low glycemic diet to assist in treating my polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).Not knowing anything about the glycemic index, I wanted to find the information written so that I could EASILY understand it.This book turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.It helped me understand how to change simple aspects of my daily eating such as for instance adding more fiber foods to control my insulin level.I really also like that it uses a practical approach to eating, not saying you "can't" have this or that, but simply helping you understand portion control, how your body reacts to insulin etc.It helped me develop a plan and set some goals that I am going to be able to stick to vs. attempting just another silly diet that is sure to fail.Definitely five stars in my opinion!

The G.I. Diet [Paperback] Review

The G.I. Diet [Paperback](See update at the end of the review)
First, I just have to say thank you to all of those who wrote reviews before me. It was reading through all your comments and that helped me decide to give one more diet a try.

(I got both books, The GI Diet and Living the GI Diet, which has a lot more recipies in it, and some of the ones I mention here are from that edition) Now, regarding the books and the diet: The books are set up in such a way that they are extremely easy to follow. I love the red, yellow, and green light idea for the various foods listed. The only part that is a little confusing at first is the portion size, but once you get used to not having to measure everything you eat, it is great! This book lists portions as how much of the plate it fills: 1/4 for meat, 1/4 for pasta, rice etc, and 1/2 for fruits and veggies. Now how much easier can that be? Sure, there are some things that you have to be more precise with, but not that many. The recipe sections are set up by categories that are very easy to follow. So far I have tried only a few of the recipes. I work very late hours, so there isn't time for serious cooking on work nights. Mom and I do meat and veggie meals, or a little wheat pasta with veggies and cottage cheese usually on those nights. But on my three days off we cook. Most recipes make enough servings that we can have leftovers the next day, or freeze the extra for meals when you need something quick. The recipes we have tried so far are fantastic! They don't even taste like you are on a diet. Three of our favorites are the Lazy Cabbage Rolls, Hunter Chicken, and Meat lasagna. Makes your mouth water just remembering how good it all was.

So, how is it working, you might wonder? Mom and I have been on the diet for three weeks. So far Mom has lost 8 pounds and I have lost 10. We have both lost over 2 inches from our waist measurements. Sure, we are just beginning, and most people can stick to a diet for that long, but honestly, this is the easiest diet I have ever done, and by far the most effective. I don't feel deprived of anything (with the exception of a nice big Hershey bar ), but I am learning that I don't need one. My energy level is higher and doesn't flucuate through the day like it did before when I had sudden peaks and dips in my blood sugar. Now, it stays level all day, and I don't feel like I am going to fall asleep at my computer at work.

Anyone who is considering starting a new diet should consider this one. You'll be glad you did!(Update) I've been on the diet now since February 1, 2005, and I have lost just under 50 pounds. I admit I wasn't as strict with it over the summer since it gets too hot in our house to do much baking or cooking of things that take very long to prepare, but I didn't gain back a pound over those three months that I was a little lax. We just ate simpler meals, stuck strictly to the whole grain and no sugar rules and I maintained my loss through those hot months. Now that it is moving into cooler weather again, I am anxious to get back in the swing of things. Oh, by the way. I have gone from a size 28 to a size 22. My goal is to reach a size 16, which is small enough for me since I am nearly six feet tall. My mother has gone from a size 22 to a size 16 and is aiming for a size 12. She's maintained her loss through the summer and even managed to drop 3-4 pounds during those hot months. This really is the easiest, and the best, diet I have ever tried and it has become a lifestyle change that I know I can stay with even once I reach my goals.

The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Guide to Diabetes: The Only Authoritative Guide to Managing Diabetes Using the Glycemic Index [Paperback]Before I got this book I was working in the dark as far as my newly diagnosed condition was concerned.I had advice from doctors but could not gauge the real effects of food on my sugar levels. This has released me from what was seeming like a lifetime of imprisonment within a very narrow diet. Now I eat ice cream occasionally and cream, knowing that the rest of my diet will balance out any negative effects. This is freedom !Now here I come (again) world !And, of course, I feel better than I have done for years.

The Low GI Diet Revolution: The Definitive Science-Based Weight Loss Plan (Paperback) Review

The Low GI Diet Revolution: The Definitive Science-Based Weight Loss PlanThis book is an excellent one for understanding how and what to eat. For those of us who may have grown up in families where it was always meat and potatoes until full, with an occasional soggy veg thrown in, this book is great at helping you learn what it means to eat in a healthy way that allows you to be full and lose weight if you need to. It even addresses exercise in ways that most people can do easily at home.

This is the first book on eating (or dieting) that I've really understood because it makes sense. No alarm bells went off in my head about eating this way, no doubt that I could sustain this way of eating for life, and no worrying about how much this was going to cost in specially purchased foods or gym memberships.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the recipes are pretty far out there and contain a lot of ingredients not readily available in the average kitchen. Plus, the cooking involved is probably something that would reduce the chance of anyone trying too many of these recipes.

It's entirely possible though to use types of foods that are low GI and imaginatively combine them in ways you're familiar with cooking and eating.

I would strongly recommend this book despite the difficult recipes at the end. The remainder of the book is excellent and will be one which makes sense to anyone who reads it. May we all achieve / maintain our desired weight and be healthier in the process!

Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss (Paperback) Review

Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight LossThe hoopla over low-carb diets has all but vanished in the news. Once the low-carb junk foods disappeared, the media quickly dismissed low carb as "dead." (And oh yeah, if you keep eating this way, they said, you would be dead too.)

It's not. And we're not. Plenty of us happily eat low carb, and enjoy optimal health. We look and feel great. We have not died of kidney failure, or whatever "dangers" supposed health experts warn about eating this way.

Thankfully Jonny Bowden has revised his brilliant "Living the Low Carb Life," the absolute best book of its kind to learn about this way of eating. Even if biochemistry scares you away, Bowden has a way of writing that's simultaneously entertaining, enlightening, and a pleasure to read. That's true even if you never group "biochemistry" and "a pleasure to read" in the same sentence.

The new edition contains a chapter about talking to your doctor, some additional reviews of new diet and exercise plans/ books, and more current studies to support low-carb eating. Everything you need to know about eating healthily, taking supplements, exercising, and feeling great is right here. I didn't think this book could get any better, but it did.

Read "Living Low Carb," and you'll have an intelligent, science-based argument for anyone who bemoans how terrible, or unsafe, or whatever, low carb diets can be.

Even people who know better espouse this fallacious thinking. I am almost finished with a Masters degree in nutrition. My professors confirm carbohydrates are the only "non-essential" class of nutrients (absolutely correct, as Bowden points out; the necessary amount is zero grams), and then turn around to say carbs are necessary for energy, that ketosis will create all kinds of problems like fatigue, and of course the classic myth about kidney disease.

Get the facts. The next time your friend or doctor or health "expert" tells you about how dangerous or faddish eating low carb can be, explain that we've been eating this way for millions of years (and that a low-fat diet is the true fad diet). Then knock their argument dead in the water with this engaging, impeccably written and researched book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Glycemic Index Weight Loss, 2nd Edition (Paperback) Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Glycemic Index Weight Loss, 2nd EditionLucy's first edition of the glycemic index weight loss was the best book I have read on this type of eating. Then I bought her glycemic index cookbook which completed the series. BUT when I saw the second edition come out this month, I had to get it!

Lucy has included even more information on how and what to eat to be healthy - losing weight just happens if you follow her ideas. You will feel great and look great! You will change your bad eating habits and lose weight WITHOUT DIETING.

Thanks for a second edition that really expands on the first - the two editions with the cookbook are all I need. BUT I also bought a copy of the second edition for my daughter who is a Type I diabetic. The info in Lucy's books works for her and her family - including my brand-new granddaughter. Thanks, Lucy!
