The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight LossI've been dieting all my life and I've noticed that when I diet HARD I lose less. No matter where I looked for an answer to this problem, no diet book seemed to address the phenomenon. But this book does! Finally, The Slow Down Diet combines the body and mind link to guide people into losing weight. Showing scientific experiments and individual profiles, the author Marc David, a nutritionist with a master's degree in the psychology of eating, shows how the more pressure you put on yourself to restrict food or force yourself to cut out one full type of food and the more you push yourself into doing un-enjoyable exercises, the more your body sees it as an attack and responds by readying itself for hardships. It lowers metabolism and you don't lose weight!

When I read how this book says that it's not just what you eat, but how you eat that keeps weight from coming off, it rang a bell to me. Marc Davidexplains that rushing and not thinking about the food you consume impairs digestion so you might be eating a lot of calories but your body isn't getting what it needs for optimal health and you hunger for more. By paying attention to the food you put into your mouth, by slowing down to take the time to actually use all your senses to give respect to the food, it permits the body to achieve it's maximum metabolism to get all the nutrients from your meals. This book explains why, if you slow down and take the time to enjoy the process, then your body can calm down enough to work properly and let the excess weight your body doesn't need come off. New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great. [Paperback]I have hesitated to write a review because I am one of the success stories in this book.However, in light of T. Colin Campbell's unprofessional attack on this book, I believe I must speak up to share my story and the good health that has resulted in my following the Atkins plan.I am nearly 65 years old and have struggled with weight all my life.I've been on many diets including a vegetarian one with little results in either weight loss or improved health.In fact, my health markers were getting worse, and I suffered from arthritis, dry skin and elevated tryglyceride levels.My blood pressure was borderline. Since following the plan outlined in this book, I have lost weight, my arthritis has improved substantially (particularly in my neck and shoulders) and my dry skin (which 2 dermatologists had diagnosed as rosacea) has disappeared.My tryglyceride level dropped remarkably, but more importantly my HDL (the good cholesterol) has gone up and my latest BP was 117/76. I used to wear a size 18 -- now I wear a 6 or 8.All of these results came from following the plan outlined in this book.

What disturbs me further about T. Colin Campbell is that he has clearly put out a call to his vegan followers to come to the Amazon site and give bad reviews of this book, as he posted this nonsense on his webpage.I don't have a problem with their chosen lifestyle, but I do have a problem with the many deragatory posts that make it clear that they could not have read this book as they have no comprehension of its contents.Shame on them.Using the Amazon review system to grind their vegan axes should not be allowed.

Contrary to their ravings, the Atkins diet recommends lots of vegetables, a conservative amount of dietary protein and good fats.All recommendations that are supported by recent science. Read Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories" or the distinquished works of Dr. Mary Enig. T. Colin Campbell has used this review process to further his own agenda and has encouraged his minions to post here.They disparage the book as well as mouth urban legend lies about Dr. Robert Atkins (a cardiologist, BTW).Anyway, read the book and make your own conclusions.Don't be led astray by these agenda-led and untrue attacks.This 65 year old feels 20-30 years younger!!

A licensed and registered dietitian and a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Dawn Jackson Blatner is also the hostess of a "Healthy Eating' segment on Chicago's Fox News in the Morning. Once referring to herself as a "closet meat eater, she now openly calls herself a flexitarian. Dawn is mainly a vegetarian who eats a little red meat on occasion--a flexitarian.

Dawn Blatner writes that the word "flexitarian" was chosen by the American Dialect Society as the Most Useful Word of the Year (2003). Also, a 2003 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition sampled 13,000 people and found that 2 of 3 vegetarians eat this way.

And it is also for those who wish to really make a change for long-lasting health, taking a new approach to how they shop, prepare, and enjoy their food.

As diet books change into wellness books, more emphasis is put into total body health. The reader should be able to ask such questions as, "How will bad cholesterol be reduced? Will I be able to walk farther? Am I sleeping better?" The Flexitarian Diet hits this mark.

Again, my fascination and usage of George's books are especially for breakfast and lunch and snacks, for these and maybe you are the toughest for this reviewer to keep it creative and healthy.This collection is like his first, just outstanding.You'll enjoy such as: Riviera Omelet (with prochiutto or Parma; Southwestern Breakfast Bites; Cinanamon Toast Pancakes!!!!; Chirstian's Banana Bread Muffins; Uncle Al's Sausage and Peppers Casserole; Kim's Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Lemony White Wine Sauce; Thai Scallop and Prawn Stir-Fry;Roasted Pecan and Herb-Crusted Salmon; Forzen Custard Ice Cream.

Did I mention great Entrees and Desserts as well!Each recipe is not only given the needful nutrition breakouts and good instructions, but each further has "Make It Memorable" and "Healthful Hint" sections.These are really neat, as it has other menu recipe ideas and differences with those on rapid diet descent.

With some nice color photos and all the aids you'll need to keep on low-carb track, this is nice resource for our culinary time.

I am a burnt out "Zoner".This summer I watched the scales go higher and higher, commensurate with my apathy for sensible eating.Unacceptable behavior but inevitable considering the five year stretch of in-the-Zone living I did.

I read an article in BOOM, a newpaper for baby boomers.The reporter was assigned the task of finding a "diet that worked".He had on his list the AMA NO FAD DIET.Intrigued, he and his wife decided to give it a try.He reported that within weeks he had lost inches and was experiencing that all important psychological feeling of wellness that comes along with a healthy balanced eating plan.It was good timing and I bought the book immediately.

I think it most important to have finally found some guidelines that are presented in a manner that really feels like new found knowledge, instead of a mixed up version of the same old same old.The first part of the book, which discusses three different eating plans and why and how to choose which works best for you somehow did a wonderful job of just "sticking" in my mind.It's rare in this kind of book to find that you actually feel satisfied in the reading of it and have knowledge retention afterwards.

This book also addressed some of the issues I was having with maintaining my current weight because it addressed my motivation issues directly in a way that made sense to me.

Beck's approach to weight loss is different than anything you have ever done in the past.She never talks down to the reader or makes the reader feel inadequate.She is a very realistic, positive voice that is no nonsense about what needs to be done and how to go about doing it.She sets forth very clearly defined, straight-forward tasks for dieting that if they are followed correctly, step by step, you WILL lose weight and you WILL follow your plan and you WILL stay on track.You can change your thinking.

What I liked most about it was the fact that it shows you exactly which foods to choose; it doesn't just flippantly mention some obsecure thing and forget to tell you how to make the best choices. Also, for the price, this is a great investment. Don't you want to know what would be the better choice whenever you eat fast food and, let's be honest, we all eat fast food occassionaly--sometimes there's no way to avoid it, such as when you travel. But with this, you are armed and ready to make much better choices concering your diet. It is a must, must have! I'd also say that Goodbye, Fatty! Hello, Skinny! How I Lost Weight And Still Ate The Foods I Loved-Without Dieting is another good one that's also helped me in this area.

Mastering Leptin: Your Guide to Permanent Weight Loss and Optimum HealthI was impressed with the fact that this husband and wife team,in their early 50's, is so committed to bringing us the latest breaking news on leptin and the research related to solving obesity in this country. Their book (now the 2nd edition) explains why leptin is the key hormone that regulates all other hormones in the body, and how leptin imbalance is the precursor to heart disease, thyroid conditions, and cancer. The information is not their opinions, but rather a compilation of ALL scientific data on leptin to date, presented in a fairly easy-to-follow writing style. They give special guidelines for correcting leptin imbalances,including the use of certain supplements, which in turn will lead to correction of a host of other imbalances, like insulin resistance. (As an aside, insulin resistance alone affects 50% of our country's population, contributing hugely to the obesity epidemic.)

I agree that the book is a bit choppy. I think a professional writer could have helped smooth out the rough edges. However, the content is exceptional. I have recently discovered that I am a borderline diabetic with a low-functioning thyroid and insulin resistance, which likely developed as a result of my last pregnancy. Prior to that I had no apparent problems in these areas. This book helps to explain how this happened and is guiding me back to healthy. I am indebted to these authors.

I have also read the Rosedale Diet, which I think is also very good. However, I believe Mastering Leptin explains leptin and all its implications more completely. Mastering Leptin also explains the wisdom in waiting 5 hours between meals and avoiding snacks, and how that is critical to bringing leptin in line. Dr. Rosedale includes snacks in his book, focusing more on the types of foods to eat rather than on scheduling to allow your body to restore its natural rhythm. Eating all the time keeps our bodies too focused on digestion and keeps our insulin levels up. I'd go to the Rosedale Diet for the recipes but to the Mastering Leptin book for the guidance. After losing 40+ pounds on my own and still having high cholesterol and still being 60 pounds overweight (not to mention feeling terrible) I needed answers.My OB/GYN found the problem and suggested The Insulin-Resistance Diet book by Hart and Grossman.I am now a total of 100 pounds lighter (50+ pounds thanks to the Insulin Resistance Diet), my cholesterol is normal and my Insulin levels are normal. Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight LossI respectfully disagree with those reviewers who claim there is nothing new in this book.They must have skipped to the last chapters and simply read the dietary recommendation at the end - and even those are different in both form and function.I have read, and been on, about every diet out there -- atkins, south beach, california, grapefruit - you name it.I have been on the Ultra Metabolism Phase 1 plan for 3 weeks, have lost 7 lbs - never feel hungry at all - but more importantly - I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER!I didn't even know I felt that bad!

You must read this book from the beginning and then all the way through - taking each of the tests and determining the areas where your body is not functioning properly. I had no idea so many of my symptoms were tied to stress and cortisol release.I have a friend who had no idea she had hormone imballances but identified them and sought a functional medicine physician to correct them - and is ecstatic - and she was a vegetarian before she even read the book.I have another friend whose breast cancer physician had her read this book and go on the diet as part of her treatment!All three of us feel transformed.

I can't recommend this book enough.I was exercising 4 days a week ,hardly eating ANYTHING, and still gaining weight, and now I know WHY and what do to about it.If you will strictly adhere to the phase 1 guidelines ( which will require shopping at your local Whole Foods or natural foods market ), I bet you will lose weight and feel great doing it too.

Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program for Permanent Weight Loss [Paperback]Dr. Shapiro's book demonstrates very succinctly how to make some simpleyet profound changes in your eating styles/food selection and how thesechoices will ultimately lead to maintained weight loss.The biggest factorworking for him is the fact that this is not a "diet" -- i.e.,replete with complicated and stringent eating rules and regulations -- hesimply shows you that by increasing your consumption of fruits/vegetablesand decreasing your consumption of other foods (not necessarily eliminatingthem however) you can eat a good deal of food (even interesting food) andstill lose weight/maintain weight.The only thing I wish he had added tothe book: 1. more info on better meat choices (i.e., lean chicken etc.) 2.ideas for people with seafood allergies (i.e., he includes many examples oflow cal meals based on shrimp, scallop, clams, etc- - but if you'reallergic to seafood this part can be somewhat disheartening).Overall, asI mentioned in the title of this review -- it's a well-written,well-illustrated book and it is worth a read.

The Advanced Mediterranean Diet is more than just a "diet" book, it provides detailed explanations of human physiology, explains in great detail the impact of different foods on the body. The Mediterranean diet is explained well, and the author does a fantastic job of highlighting the many benefits of it and how it can even reverse the effects of medical conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. The book also puts a heavy emphasis on the importance of exercise, and even gives you a variety of ideas to keep exercising from becoming boring and tedious. On the Dieting side of things, this book offers four different dieting plans based off gender, current weight and activity level, ultimately giving you a diet that will produce results without leaving you starving. On top of all of this, the website for the book is great and offers an opportunity for interaction with the author via Dr. Parker's blog, which is updated regularly. The No S Diet: The Strikingly Simple Weight-Loss Strategy That Has Dieters Raving--and Dropping Pounds [Paperback]I don't buy diet books, I don't believe in depriving myself or regimenting my diet and I was able to be a size 00 up until my 28th-29th birthday, give or take.
Alas, I moved countries and picked a few bad eating habits along the way, 10 years later I'm flirting my way to a size 12 and I started wondering if the weight gain was ever going to stop.
I knew there had to be a way to bake my cake (I'm a cook) and eat it, I just refused to think that if I wanted to be slim again I should forever ration, scrutinize, divide my food and worse: say goodbye to a list of foods and ingredients.
Well, I found the way: the NoS Diet.
If I tell you that I have been eating this way until I moved countries and started gaining weight and that there is plenty of people that eat this way, you'll think there's something wrong either with me or with the book, I mean: isn't this a diet book?.
Yes and no; it is a diet book in the sense that by reading it and following it's premise, you'll lose weight and even better, you'll keep it off; it's not a diet book because there is no regime here, no menus, no recipes, no restrictions, no magic formula; this is a book that will tell you in a concise and precise way how is that your skinny friend manages to be skinny even though she has never dieted, how come those people in the '70s were all so skinny, how come ,even, is that you used to be thin once upon a time, like in my case.
This is a book about good habits and moderation, how to learn them or re-learn them and more importantly: how to keep remembering those good habits and keep them up for the rest of your life.

You want flashy testimonials?, sorry, none here; I can, however, tell you that I have lost three lbs in the month I've been following this book's advice, that I've been eating exactly the way I wanted to eat, that all guilt about food has been removed from my conscience, that my confidence has made a comeback, that all my dietary anxiety is gone.
You want to know what I've had today?: Raisin and walnut home baked bread with butter and honey and hot milk, chickpea and pasta stew with a drizzle of olive oil and parmesan cheese and egg korma, flatbread and mango for desert, all chosen by me, just because this is what I wanted to eat today, not bad, huh?

No Sweets No Snacks No Seconds except on Saturdays, Sundays and Special occasions, that's all there is to it, yes it's all in the cover, but reading the book is also very helpful, very explainative and you can always go back to it for reference.
In short:
This is gold.
I can do this.
YOU can do this.
Forever.
Do yourself a favor, buy this book and follow it's advice.

The Biggest Loser: The Weight Loss Program to Transform Your Body, Health, and Life--Adapted from NBC's Hit Show [Paperback]If you really like the show and can't wait for each new segment to air, you'll also want a copy of the book. It reveals more about the contestents and their struggles.
If you want a specific diet and exercise program that reflects what the contestents went through, you may or may not find that here. I say "may" because it wasn't uncommon for those on the show to do 3 hours of exercise a day (sometimes more) to achieve the kind of weight loss that showed on the scale each week.
Are YOU up to that kind of challenge? If you are, you can take the info in this book and go for the burn. If not, you can still follow the plan and lose weight - but be aware that you may not see the same dramatic weight loss as the contestents on the show without exerting maximum effort.
I really enjoyed reading this book and actually like it BETTER than the show (and I confess I really didn't like the show much with its humiliating climax, where one contestent would be voted off the show per week). Within the context of a book, the personal stories are engaging and much of the book is inspirational, just the type of material that might compel you to stick to your exercise and diet plan.
There is plenty of useful info here although I can't say it hasn't been covered in other books. What sets this one apart are the personal accounts and I can never get enough of those. When someone starts at 300 pounds plus and manages to get to goal weight, it becomes pretty clear that nearly anyone can get there, with enough willpower and motivation. This book could be one more motivational aid.

As I read this book I couldn't help thinking how similar it is to the Zone diet.Low refined carbs, high fiber, lean protein, and a small amount of healthy fats.The only thing that's different is that you are aiming for about 35 grams of fiber per day; the Zone doesn't stress fiber as much, although it does clearly say that the more fiber, the better, because it fills you up.

So...I am now on day 2 of the 2-week introduction phase of the diet, and I'm not dying...yet.I don't feel too deprived on this diet because the foods you eat really are quite filling.I also like that after the first 2 weeks, there are no forbidden foods...you just have to eat appropriate portions since what you can eat is limited to a certain # of servings.

I had to buy a case of the GG Crackers online, because I can't find any stores here that sell them (and I'm in Seattle!!!).The crackers are definitely 100% fiber, and they taste like it.I've found that as I get more creative with how I use them, it gets easier.For instance, they're great with peanut butter.I also like them with light cream cheese and lox, or light cream cheese and cucumbers w/ cracked pepper.

So, basically it's a diet.If you're an absolute foodie like myself, you will feel limited, despite the author's claims.The notion that "you don't take away foods, you just add more fiber" is a little misleading, because you have to cut way down on processed carbs.However, processed carbs aren't off limits, you just really can't enjoy that chicken pot pie like you used to.

Overall, it's a sound diet.It describes the way humans are probably meant to eat.It's healthy, there are a million benefits to eating enough fiber, and you definitely feel less weighed down on it.However...the fun factor goes right out the window.I mean, seriously...have you ever seen a Nutritionist who looks like he/she has any FUN when he/she eats?

ADDITION TO ORIGINAL REVIEW, 7 weeks later:
I don't know if it's due to the diet, or due to me finally being enlightened about my relationship with food, but I have definitely been able to integrate the concept of more fiber/less refined carbs into the way I just live.After the first two strict weeks, I have definitely relaxed some of the "rules" (I mean, sometimes you need a slice of pizza) and found that I'm successful at 1) Not feeling guilty when I do indulge, or feeling like I've "failed" and 2) Being able to continue the diet without feeling that since I've gone off course, there's no longer hope.My main mantra is that if I follow the diet (which I now consider to be a lifestyle) 90% of the time, then I will benefit from it 90% of the time (I believe Dr. Sears of the Zone had a similar philosophy).There is no danger of going "out of the Zone", or getting "out of ketosis" i.e. Atkins.There is no physical state that you "must maintain" in order for the diet to work.You just pick up where you left off.

So...some things I've experienced while on this diet, and again--I can't claim that it's 100% due to the diet, or if it's because I am now finally "ready" to accept that living a healthy lifestyle means ADOPTING healthy habits--are below. I do believe this fiber diet has been a great initiation to a better lifestyle:

1.I have lost about 10 pounds in the last 7 weeks.This doesn't seem like a lot, but it has been gradual and I've accepted this as the way I will eat for life, not a crash diet.Also, I have NOT increased my exercise during this time. I'm o.k. with slow progress if it means I'll be able to do this for a lifetime and never have to diet again. I am slowly working more physical activity into my lifestyle.I feel much better, clothes fit better, and I carry myself with the confidence I had when I was in my 20's and weighed much less.

2.I was taking a proton pump inhibitor for my chronic heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux.I was able to stop taking this medication after week one because I no longer have the above symptoms, and really believe that I won't need to take it ever again.I'm relieved for this because of recent evidence that suggests PPIs inhibit calcium absorption and therefore may lead to less bone density (particularly in the hip) and higher risk for bone breakage as I age.

3.My hunger is under control.I have learned how to be satisfied without being "stuffed" when I eat, and I am happier with smaller meals, thus fewer calories. I do not feel the low blood sugar crash when I get hungry between meals (meaning that I am not a crazed maniac if I cannot immediately eat), and I am much more aware of what I'm eating because of it.If I eat a really large lunch, I can easily eat a much smaller dinner and be perfectly satisfied.I no longer have cravings for junk, and believe me:I used to LOVE the junk.

RECIPES AND STUFF THAT'S WORKED FOR ME:

One thing that has been a great addition to this diet are Mama Lupe's low-carb tortillas (60 calories, 3 grams fat, 7 grams carb, 4 grams fiber in each 10-inch tortilla).They are the best tasting low-carb tortillas I've ever had, and I've tried many.I have not found them in stores, but order them online. I'll make quesadillas with fresh homemade salsa, use them for wraps with lunch meats, cheese and plenty of fresh veggies, or use them as I would normal tortillas when I cook Mexican food.

As for the GG crackers, some great success I've had:
1.With peanut butter and apple slices
2.With dijonaisse, lunch meat and low-fat cheese and pickles
3.As pizza crust: line them up on the bottom of a baking sheet, add your favorite tomato topping (or make your own by simmering fresh diced tomatoes, plenty of garlic, oregano and salt to taste), add the italian cheese blend you can find in the bags already shredded, and top with chicken italian sausage that you've taken out of the casings and cooked in a skillet (may need a bit of olive oil since the good chicken sausage is low-fat).Throw the whole thing in a 375-degree oven for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and getting to be golden.The crackers soften up a bit, but hold up to the firmness needed to hold the toppings.

4.I've been adding a tablespoon of ground Flax Meal (you can find it at health food stores, or online) to my morning yogurt for an added boost of fiber, plus the great benefits of heart-healthy omega-3's.
Flax has a wonderful, nutty taste and adds great texture.

5.I make a home-made Chinese Chicken Salad with cabbage, shredded carrots, diced chicken or turkey breast, sesame seeds and whatever sesame dressing (I like Girard's Chinese Chicken Salad dressing--it's fairly high fat but I consider it my daily indulgence--the glass triangular bottle).Then, instead of the high-fat fried chow mein noodles, I'll add 1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal for crunch.The salad still tastes great, and packs a nice fiber punch.

6.I have been very dedicated to preparing meals and setting aside "leftovers" or putting something together for lunch the next day at work.Because of this, my lunches are healthy and support my diet, and I save money because I don't eat out every day like I used to.Best of luck--if this diet resonates with you and you can work with it as a lifestyle change, I have no doubts that you will benefit from all the great things FIBER can do for you!

HCG Weight Loss Cure GuideI believe that weight loss is a journey.There are those who simply don't know enough about how their bodies work to complete this protocol.Please do some research.Those individuals may not feel comfortable with this approach. I, on the other hand, have read Dr. Perricone's weight loss book - along with Dr. Barry Sears - Zone book and tons of others.I know that refined, processed foods don't work for my body.

I am very surprised by the negative reviews of Trudeau's book. Amazon's suggested tags have words like "fraud" although this book has mostly positive reviews. I have read Dr. Simeon's original manuscript and I am currently taking HCG that I received from a licensed physician. IT WORKS! I feel great! I have lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks. I've got 3 weeks to go. I would also recommend this book because it's more streamlined than Trudeau's - although I think Trudeau's book is helpful because of the in-depth analysis of dangerous toxins in our body.It's not about weight loss but rather fat loss! I've lost inches and reshaped my body. I found a doctor that prescribes HCG in Aurora, IL - I live about 40 minutes away. I only had to see him twice. Once for a consultation and then for a two week follow-up. I know that everyone isn't comfortable with the idea of a self-injection. Trust me...I'd take this over popping pills anytime. It's quick and painless. I took Phentermine years ago which is FDA approved.It was prescribed by my primary care physician. The experience is like night and day. I had insomnia, dry mouth, jitters, etc. - it was awful and I loss the wrong type of fat.My face was drawn and I looked tired.I have had absolutely NO side effects with HCG!

Anyway, my HCG doctor was referred by a colonic therapist I found online. Colonics are important too but not absolutely necessary for success. The honest truth is that very few people can actually follow the 50+ suggestions in Phase 1 of Trudeau's book - but that's NOT the point. The point is to make some of the changes so you can live a healthier lifestyle AFTER losing weight on HCG. There are things I will absolutely NOT do since reading this book - like eat anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup or MSG or trans fat. I also ensure that I workout daily and I don't eat out much! Shopping at Whole Foods may be more expensive but the cost has been offset by preparing meals at home! One of the greatest benefits is that I'm no longer drinking alcohol and eating sugar.I would suggest that you Google "Sugar Dangers".

I don't understand how can anyone claim that a hormone (HCG is a hormone not drug) is dangerous (it's actually used as a fertility treatment) and yet they poison their bodies with High Fructose corn syrup, trans fat and bovine injected in cows.Not to mention all the man-made chemicals in our food and toxins in our cleaning supplies.Dr. Simeons graduated summa cum laude - he's brilliant. This is HIS protocol - not Trudeau's.This protocol simply builds on what I already knew - refined, processed foods are bad for you. If it doesn't come from a plant, animal or fish - you're body doesn't need it!

UPDATE 10/27/08- I wrote my initial review after about 3 weeks of HCG injections.I have now completed Phase 2 - I loss a total of 31 lbs and I'm into my second week of Phase 3.I must admit that Phase 3 (no sugar/no starch phase)is more difficult than Phase 2 because I'm not sure what to eat. I know not to eat sugar or starch but you're supposed to consume a minimum of 1500 calories and that's difficult for me because I'm not all that hungry and I am fearful of gaining weight.That said, I am going to follow the suggested menus in this book and I'm going to begin daily exercise.Having the HCG Weight Loss Cure Guide is crucial in completing this protocol because it is easy to follow with eating charts and food journals.

I am very pleased with the outcome thus far.I can finally fit all of my clothes again.It's been an entire year since I last wore my favorite jeans. I am planning on doing one more round of HCG just to give myself a buffer.I have to say that I really don't want to lose more weight but I'd love to lose a few more inches off my midsection.The great thing about the HCG approach is that although I weigh 146 lbs., my clothes fit better than they did when I weighed 135 lbs last year.UPDATE 03/10/09- I just completed a second round of HCG.I lost 27 lbs. I would recommend that you do NOT start this protocol in September because you will not finish Phase 3 (the 2nd 3 weeks) until the week of Thanksgiving.This was the mistake I made last fall and I gained weight during the Holiday season as a result.In addition, please adhere to the "Steak Day" if you gain more than 2lbs in one day. I failed to do this.It's much better to complete this protocol in the spring or summer months when you're most active (exercise is crucial).Actually, a great time to start is the month of January.As I've stated previously, Dr. Simeon's protocol works great for losing weight. I cannot say that it "resets" your metabolism.If you immediately start eating an abundance of highly refined, processed, inorganic foods, you will regain the weight.This is because of reasons explained in metabolism book I recommend below. Times have changed quite a bit since Dr. Simeon's days.I would suggest that you IMMEDIATELY start Phase 4 or some lifetime plan after completing Phase 3 (three weeks no sugar/starch, followed by three weeks low sugar/starch). Please follow the Phase 3 menus outlined in this guide.They are great!!I was reluctant at first because I thought I would gain weight but I didn't.Peanut butter, apples and trail mix are quite yummy.

If you start Phase 4 (your lifetime phase), you should immediately begin a weight training and cardio fitness regimen.This will help rebuild muscle.

Don't go back to your old ways of eating!Our genes can't handle it. Try to prepare meals at home as much as possible.I know it's difficult because I love going out to eat.The problem is that you don't know how your meal is being prepared (or exactly what is being prepared). Not to mention to temptation of bread and alcohol. If you have reservations about Kevin Trudeau, then read the book "Ultra-Metabolism" by Dr. Mark Hyman.It basically states the same thing (with meal plans) - like the importance of whole foods, supplements, herbs and exercise (plus saunas) in maintaining a healthy weight.It's more scientific which is quite helpful as Trudeau spends a lot of his time ranting (although understandably).

If you follow the recommendations in "Ultra-Metabolism", you will have no problem maintaining your weight loss.I can't necessarily say the same thing about Trudeau's Phase 4 because it's not an actual meal plan.The nice thing about the HCG protocol is that you lose weight quickly so you are naturally motivated to maintain your new physique.There are tons of books on gluten-free and sugar-free desserts if you love sweets.Losing weight with HCG is the easy part.Maintenance is a different animal.I am currently reading "The Raw Food Detox Diet" and "The Complete Beck Diet for Life". You really need a plan you can follow for life!I can't stress that enough.Whatever you decide, just make sure you can stick with it.HCG is for weight loss but not maintenance!I would also recommend Paul McKenna's book "I Can Make You Thin" because it teaches you how to think about food differently. The Beck Diet Solution also addresses emotional eating. Have a great spring and summer! Most of our challenges are emotional and until you deal with what's eating you, all the protocols, detox plans and recipes in the world won't help.I'm running an 8K at the end of March which is a great way to kick off the season!
