The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique! [Paperback] Review

The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique [Paperback]This book has worked wonders for me! Since beginning this "lifestyle change" (not really a diet), I have already lost 23 pounds so far and am losing about 2 pounds per week. Of course I exercise as well, but I had been exercising the same way before and was not losing weight. This lifestyle change has had a positive effect on my entire family. My wife, who was already petite, looks even better and my 14 year old daughter has lost 10 lbs! The whole family had bought in. We are enjoying coming up with new recipes and we spend more time cooking and eating together.

Another unintended consequence of this lifestyle change is that it has saved us money! We used to eat out quite a bit. We would spend nearly $700 per month eating at restaurants and fast foods!! Trust me, it's not hard to do if you eat out 2-3 times per week with an average ticket of $50-$60. So far this month (through August 23rd), we've spent just $32 on dining out! Last month, we spent $74! We are saving over $600 a month because we cook at home instead of eating out. Unbelievably, we are also spending less on groceries. I am very surprised by this because I, like most people, thought that clean (healthier) foods would cost a lot more. Well, that's not true! You would be surprised as to how much unclean foods in the grocery cart add up. Chips, soda, frozen pizza & beer = $$$$$. Now that we don't buy those foods and very little alcohol (only wine occasionally), we spend a lot less on groceries overall and have more to spend on lean meats, vegetables and fruit.

I highly recommend this book! It has changed out lives for the better!

Where Did All the Fat Go?: The WOW! Prescription to Reach Your Ideal Weight--and Stay There! : Lose Fat - Gain Muscle! (Hardcover) Review

Where Did All the Fat Go: The WOW Prescription to Reach Your Ideal Weight--and Stay There : Lose Fat - Gain MuscleUnlike many gimmicky and fad diets out there, this is a plan rooted in how our bodies are actually wired to be healthy. With an empasis on getting healthy instead of losing pounds, the end result is incredible transformation with a new lease on life and a maintainable weight loss!I was one of the Season 3 Biggest Loser at home contestants who had nothing but Dr. Huizenga's WOW Prescription to reach my ideal weight; no trainers, no gym equipment, no fairy tale weight loss ranch.I followed his advice and guidance to the letter and over the course of eight months I lost 176 pounds (see my transformation at www.MatthewMcNutt.com).I've read his book and am overwhelmed at how he has successfully captured on paper the plan that has helped five seasons (and counting) of Biggest Loser contestants lose the weight - and it can be done all at home, like I and 35 others demonstrated in season three with the at home competition!Unlike many weight loss books, Huizenga has woven the stories of the 36 at home participants through out the book, using our examples, questions and experiences to illustrate how to implement his plan.Rather than just tell the reader what to do, he demonstrates that it is possible in the real world. Not only that, it makes for an enjoyable read!Besides giving a behind the scenes look at how the contestants actually lose the weight at such a dramatic pace on the Biggest Loser Ranch, he communicates a sense of hope and possibility that many of us have lost sight of.Without a doubt, there is someone in the book that each reader can identify with and find an inspiration with.I absolutely recommened this book; it has literally saved my life.

The Abs Diet for Women: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Belly and Firm Up Your Body for Life [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

The Abs Diet for Women: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Belly and Firm Up Your Body for Life [Paperback]My husband and I went on the Abs Diet last year and did great. I saw this new book and thought maybe I could tailor the Abs Diet for me, as a woman. I thought things would be a little more differentiated, but the changes from the "men's" book are minimal. The recipes and basic concepts are the same. A lot of the book focuses on post-baby weight, which is not my concern (yet). The testimonials are from women and the exercises are photos of women, but other than that, it's not really any different than the men's version. If you're both trying out the diet, you might as well stick to the men's version and save a few bucks. But, if it's just you (and you're a woman), then give this "diet" a shot.

We had great results and felt a lot better eating the recommended foods. Beyond that, you don't even start the exercises 'til you're 3 weeks into the program! Great for those who need to ease into a new diet/program.

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged!: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever! [Paperback] Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever [Paperback]I purchased the original _Eat-Clean Diet_ book when it came out a few years ago, and used the principles in it to lose sixteen pounds (two dress sizes).Recently, I've been a little more lax in my eating, so I purchased this book last week to help motivate me to get back on track with my eating for the new year.

Before purchasing this newer edition, I was worried that it would be very similar to the first version of the book, but, as Reno explains, it contains over 100 pages of new text. While there are some chapters that are similar in both books (like chapters on the importance of drinking water and eating breakfast), there are a lot of new ideas. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase the older, original edition of this book or this one, I would recommend buying this one since it contains more recent information about nutritional studies. If, like me, you already own the original book, I think you'll still find the ideas in here useful and inspirational.

I find Reno to be very motivating, and, if you're struggling to lose weight, you will probably find her books really helpful. The idea behind clean eating is that you eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, without adding in extra sugar, chemicals, etc.Eating six meals a day ensures that you never go hungry, and you don't have to worry about calorie counting.

Another great feature of this book is that she includes a vegan meal plan in it.The first edition was very centered around meat, which made it difficult for me (as a lacto-ovo vegetarian) to see how I could incorporate all of her suggestions since I wasn't about to gnaw on a chicken breast as my morning snack.

Reno also focuses much more in this edition on the environmental effects that our food choices have, citing Michael Pollan's work and the principles of films like _Food, Inc._.Since I am concerned with environmental issues, I really liked this new focus on eating locally and sustainably.

This book also contains 50 new recipes.I have not tried any of them yet, but will be sure to update my review after I have tried a few.The inclusion of quite a few vegetarian recipes is another nice feature.

I first discovered Reno in _Oxygen_ fitness magazine, where she is a monthly columnist, and last year was happy to see that Robert Kennedy Publishing (the group that publishes Reno's book and _Oxygen_) began a new magazine called _Clean Eating_.If you want even more seasonal, healthy recipes and nutrition tips, I definitely recommend subscribing to it.Just be warned, however, that it contains a lot of ads promoting Reno's books -- to an annoying degree. If you can look past those ads, it makes a nice addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.
UPDATE ON 3/1/10:I've made a few of the recipes, and all of them have turned out to be really good!In my original review, I accidentally said that the book has over 15 new recipes, but it actually has 50 new ones.If you have the original version of this, you definitely don't *need* this newer version, but the updates and success stories make it a nice addition to my collection of health books.

Winning by Losing [Mass Market Paperback] Review

Winning by Losing [Mass Market Paperback]Jillian Michaels, the tough-talking personal trainer of the Red Team on "The Biggest Loser", brings her no-nonsense personality to this diet and exercise book. Not another "just eat less and move more" tome, Jillian actually acknowledges that there is an individual approach to losing weight, and that no correct way will work for everyone.
I have watched both seasons of The Biggest Loser, and I thought of Jillian as an abrasive woman who never had a weight problem in her life. I thought that she was tough on her "clients" because she looked down on them for being overweight. After reading her book, I have changed my opinion.

In the first section of the book that focuses on Self, Jillian states that she had a weight problem that had emotional roots (like mine), and that she had to value herself first, and then loose weight. In the next section, Science, Jillian demonstrates how to "crunch the numbers" to help us understand how our body works in relation to weight loss. Next, she goes on to explain the different ways that we process foods. Using this information, we can tailor a diet to suit our bodies.I learned that I was a "slow oxidizer", which means that I need 65% carbs, 25% protein, and 15% fat. This explained why I could never loose weight on Atkins (no low-carb craze for me). In the last section, Sweat, Jillian gives us the benefits of exercise as well as descriptions of various exercises (weight lifting).

This book is great, and not another typical weight-loss book. Utilizing common sense, knowledge, and, perhaps most importantly, a no-gimmick point of view, Jillian explains, encourages, and talks tough when she has to.

Keep telling it like is, Jillian. And thanks.

Making the Cut: The 30-Day Diet and Fitness Plan for the Strongest, Sexiest You (Paperback) Review

Making the Cut: The 30-Day Diet and Fitness Plan for the Strongest, Sexiest YouI just got the book 3 days ago.I am only on day three, but the information in this book is eye opening.Jillian covers everything from hormones and metabolism, supplements like hoodia, even the master cleanse.

I saw the review below and can't help but wonder if that person actually read the book. There ARE in fact 3 separate 30 day menu plans. One for each oxidizer type (slow, balanced, and fast). For that reason, 1 plan will ask for non-fat cottage cheese and another will ask for low fat. Those two ingredients are not on the same meal plan and they are also on separate grocery lists (of which there are 3, one for fast, balanced, and slow).

Jillian goes on to explain that the recipes make up to 10 - 12 servings for the following reasons: Most women don't want to make separate meals for their families. Also, the book allots each reader with and individualized calorie allowance. As some of the recipes are very low calorie, some people doing the plan will require up to 5 servings of each recipe.Last, if you are like me, always on the run and finding it difficult to cook every night this book will solve your problem. This way you will have healthy food prepared when you are pressed for time. All that said, she specifically mentions in the book that if you want to make less food you can simply cut the ingredients in half and the meal will still come out perfectly making half the servings.

With regard to the workouts: There are over 100 separate exercises in the book and less then 10 of them require gym equipment. The workouts seem predominantly designed to utilize body weight exercises (no gym required).

The workouts do seem tough, that is for sure. However, you can easily modify the exercises to accomodate your fitness level.Jillian offers over 8 variations of plank exercise, 11 different variations of lunges, 8 variations of push ups, and 8 variations of squats just to name a few. For those that don't have a treadmill accessible she offers up over 10 different types of cardio intervals that require no equipment like mountain climbers, butt kicks, squat jacks etc.

As for not being able to tackle weeks 3 and 4 of the workouts on day 1, I think that is the whole point. In order to lose weight quickly you must progress your fitness level quickly. For example, the contestants on Biggest Loser couldn't walk around the block on day 1 and by day 7 she seems to have them running miles and doing push ups. This is why she instructs you to follow the plan religiously.I assume that by doing the workouts from week 1 and week 2 you will be ready to take on weeks 3 and 4, hence the books promise of delivering "the best shape of your life".

I love Jillian.I have been a fan of hers sine season one of Biggest Loser.I listen to her radio show religiously and trust her advice.I use her dvd's and have gotten amazing results.I love this book so far and although it's no walk in the park, I welcome the challenge.
