The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight LossI bought this book after two of my coworkers went on this diet and both lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks. I've been following the program for a little over a week and have lost 7 lbs already! The best part about it is I FEEL healthier and more energetic. This is not so much a diet as a new lifestyle. I was crazy addicted to a lot of unhealthy things but this book ahowed me how to have things I love but in a healthier way. I've never felt deprived as the plan allows (in fact, encourages) eating all through the day. I am finally losing the pounds that run-of-the-mill deit and excercise couldn't budge after years of effort. I Couldn't be happier!

There's a section on produce that tells the reader what each item is good for (which vitamins and minerals it contains) and how to buy and store them.

The "Juiceman" also includes a crash course in all the nutrients we need to be healthy, WHAT we need them for, and in which juices we can find them in.

At the end of the book, the author includes a Q&A section and tips and points on how to make juicing an integral part of your life and what to eat to compliment a diet chock full of fresh juices.

All in all, this is a great book.It may not appeal to some who are in search of something a little more fancy, with a more complex layout.But, everything considered, it's a sure bet.

Extreme Fat Smash Diet [Paperback] Review

Extreme Fat Smash Diet [Paperback]Lose 12 pounds in 3 weeks claims the book. And after reviewing it, I believe it just might be possible. Written by the author of last year's "The Fat Smash Diet," the idea of this seems to be, if you want big results, you'll have to push yourself beyond normal limits to attain them.

Once again, readers will find Dr. Smith's easy and friendly writing style. At the start of the book, you find out your "dieting type" and then quickly go from there. Since the book is set up for you to lose 12 pounds in 3 weeks, its organized in three 1 week cycles, which is 21 days. For each day, there is a menu plan (four meals a day) and a journal page you to write on. Know too that the exercise recommended each day is cardio. Other goodies include recipes, which easily make up about a third of the book, and a handy appendix ends the book (which contains useful info about BMI's, how to read food labels, etc.).

All in all, I feel like this is a great book that is well laid out and very user friendly. One caveat though. Following the plan may not be easy at times, and the book will tell you this outright. Nonetheless, it should benefit many who struggle with their weight loss demons. Also suggest Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from exercising.

You get a series of training assignments, such as eating more fiber, jotting notes in a notebook (it's surprising if you do this; how many meals last week did you grab in the car because you were rushed? And were they salads and water and a small burger or were they double-quarter-pounders with extra fries?) How much do you really drink? Is it one glass of wine (a small one?) or is it two big beakers a night? These things add up.

Some of the habits are really helpful, not only to dieters but to the poor eater; case in point, eating protein along with carbohydrates at each meal. I know someone who is skinny and always hungry. A hardboiled egg or a slice or two of meat with a starchy snack replaced his endless empty munching of cookies.

In the appendix are meal plans graded by how many calories. Not everyone should be eating 1100 calories a day, so it helps to know what constitutes a 525 calorie meal, for example. Here's a 550 Calorie meal:

275 Calorie serving of whole grain, high fiber cereal, 8 ounces non-fat milk, 1 slice whole grain toast, 1 tbs no sugar all fruit jam spread, one orange.

Interesting; this meal is very high in fiber, and it isn't particularly low in calories (300 and under.)

The author also gives hints on taming the craving monster, if you want something creamy (no-sugar pudding versus fatty ice cream, crunch--carrots or peapods versus chips.)

Finally, there are charts for progress and a discussion of alternative methods like pills, surgery and liquid diets, with their pros and (mostly) cons.

This is probably the most complete eating book I've ever read. You might never need another. Big thumbs up here to Pat Church.

When I came across this book, I decided to tryjust a little bit at a time. I thought I'd try just one day on the programper week, and see how it went. Well! I've never gone back. I have stuckwith it every day since then, which is pretty easy, thanks to the 2"eat whatever you want" meals per week.
The 20/30 eating planis easy, tasty, and even fun for me. I never feel hungry, and there arelots of good foods to eat. My doctor says this is a very healthy way toeat.
It's great news that I have lost weight on this plan. But the betternews is that I love the way I feel, and I actually LIKE eating this way. Somuch so that I plan to continue with the 20/30 plan even after I reach mygoal weight. This is a plan I can happily follow for life.
I am notusually evangelistic about anything to do with diet. But this is a book Iwill buy for all my closest friends, because I want them to be as healthyas I feel right now.
I've even started a discussion/support group forpeople who are new to 20/30 - and if you knew me, you'd realize that doingthis kind of stuff is completely out of character for me. But give me asoapbox, and I'll tell anybody that this plan has made a major differencein my life.
I'm just a regular person, and I have nothing to gain if youbuy this book. But it is the one book I would recommend to _everybody_ Theplan is sensible, the recipes are great, and this works.

Now (after finding it impossible to control her weight doing all the things in her early books that previously worked for her), Mrs. Somers has found that without proper hormone balance it becomes impossible to feel energetic and control weight consistenly within a healthy range.So, the first chapter of this book explains modern strategies of hormone replacement.Then the remainder of the book explains diet and exercise.

The tragedy (and the mistruth):Physicians are taught that only about 1% of people with obesity have abnormal hormones as part of the reason for thier obesity.When looking at adults over the age of 40, I find a much higher percentage of people with one or more hormone abnormalaties (all discussed in this book):growth hormone, thyroid (T3 or T4), testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, DHEA, or cortisol.

This book should be helpful for both men and women for the introduction and the first chapter alone.I know from my research and patient care that she speaks the truth.

As for her diet recommendations, the Abs Diet, Eat Right Every Time would work better as guiding tool.Supplement the foods there with recommendations by Mrs. Sommers (which tend to be more involved...with three sons and many patients when I cook it better be very fast most of the time and still the right kind of food).

As for the exercise part of the book: I'm sorry, but of several thousand patients, I've yet to meet ONE who lost weight and kept it off using any machine they bought from an info-mertial.Walking works.When you're walking 20 miles a week (the amount that recent research shows would keep most Americans at normal weigh WITH NO CHANGE IN DIET), if you still have extra time after walking 20 miles a week, then play with any of Mrs. Somers' toys and reap the polishing effects.Don't ice the cake with exercise toys until you've cooked the cake of normal weight with walking.Mrs. Somers honestly admits that her exercise products are not necessary but offer an extra boost for those who can afford them.The importatnt exercise problem identified by the book is that if your hormones are unbalanced and an anchor to you, you will not likely ever reach the 20-mile mark because exercise makes you feel like you were in a bar-room fight.Instead of recovering from exercise with more energy and less fat, you will feel more fatigue, plant yourself in a chair or bed to recover, and keep gaining weight.

As for finding a physician by contacting the organizations she lists in the back of the book, just be careful.These organizations will provide a useful list; but, speaking as someone who's been a member of all of these organizations at various times and attended their conferences, there can be a wide range of abilities and philosophies within it's membership.Ask how long the physician has been involved:if more than 5 years and involved in legitimate research, then you're more likely to have a winner.Less than 2 years, you may just have someone who's jumping on the bandwagon and trying to figure it all out by practicing medicine with your health.

This book is beautifully done.Mrs. Sommers makes it plain that her astounding beauty did not come by watching sit-coms and reaping the rewards of the genes of angels; her beauty comes from the genes of angels combined with the fortitude and hard work of a galley slave mixed with intelligent application of modern medicine.

If you're still struggling with weight, I'd recommend you take Mrs. Sommers' advice, read the intro and first chapter of this book and pull up any hormonal anchors that you may be dragging before exhausting yourself with diet and exercise.

I love this woman for the good she's doing.Physicians have lost some of their credibility and Medicine has been described as a "leaning tower of Pisa" by Prince Charles (I think "Leaning" due to the great force with which research is driven into wonderful discoveries by pharmacutical companies while research about basics like eating and exercise go grossly underfunded)--leaving physicians guessing about what works and people trying to figure it out with trial and error.But, here's a case where the relentless evangelism of a Star is helping give women the courage to stand up to their physician and demand a break from old dogma.If she makes another fortune doing it, she deserves every cent.

The premise is simple: 3 meals and 2-3 snacks.Snacks are all carbs to release serotonin, which helps make you feel full so you aren't as hungry when meal time comes.Breakfast is protein & carbs (1 egg and 2 pieces of toast), lunch is protein and vegetables (chefs salad), and dinner is carbs and vegetables (baked potato or rice or pasta with a salad or raw or cooked veggies).Snack can be lowfat cereal, crackers, biscotti - tons of options.Everything is broken down into easy to reference charts with measurements.No calorie counting is really required.Honestly, it was so easy I thought I was missing something.Plenty of recipes come in the book, but you can also adapt your own.

If you are suffering from medication-induced weight gain, I recommend giving the Serotonin Power Diet a try.

I bought the "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody" when we moved and I had plenty of time for a "project".It is a 12 week program designed to get you into the habit of eating healthy.The first three weeks were a lot of work and took a lot of dedication.I had to weigh and measure everything.After the first three weeks, my eyes adjusted and were able to do the measurments without the scale and cups.Some of the recipes are a lot of prep and there is a lot of cutting of vegi's and fruits.My husband and my 2 teenage kids didn't mind the changes (except brown rice) so after the first 3 weeks "learning curve", it all worked out well.I lost 25 lbs in 12 weeks and I never even got into the exercise part.After the 12 weeks, I stopped tracking my number of servings for 3 months.I still ate the same foods and made sure I didn't eat "A LOT" or high calorie foods.I stopped losing weight but I didn't gain it all back either.I have started tracking my servings again and have started working on the exercise.I have set my goal to lose another 25 lbs in the next 12 weeks.

I agree with everyone else here that the information is presented in a way that is easy to understand and explains it all.The book gets indepth but it is presented in a way that if you don't care what "trans fat" is, you can skip that part.I've even gien this book as presents to friends and family.I bought the cookbook too but I don't like that one.

It gave shocking testimonials about people who had lost 7 and 14 pounds in a week. I put the book down for a long time and didn't follow the advise. But almost 2 weeks ago, I decided to give the advise I learned from this book a try. I lost six pounds in about eight days eating what I wanted to eat. I didn't cut out my favorite foods because this book doesn't make you do that. Because this book is probably out of print, I would highly reccomend buying it. It is a must have if you don't want to give up your favorite tasty foods. That's why it has been so hard for me to lose weight. I crave and enjoy delicious food and good food lifts up my spirits. I would go into a depression if I had to eat bland rabbit food. If you are interested in publishing books, this diet book by Carlson Wade would be a wonderful book to invest in to re-print if it is indeed out of print. It really works and I didn't count calories nor did I starve.

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss---and the Myths and Realities of Dieting [Paperback] Review

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss---and the Myths and Realities of Dieting [Paperback]Gina Kolata's "Rethinking Thin" deserves a place on the best-seller list.It is a comprehensive and highly readable examination of why most diets fail. Her thesis is rooted in science and research dating back as far as the 1940s. Many of her findings will be no surprise to people who have struggled with their weight. Kolata's bottom line: genetics play a far bigger role in weight than will power, exercise, or food choices.

The book begins with details of a University of Pennsylvania study. A group of obese volunteers are divided into two groups (one using the Atkins diet, the other a low calorie diet) and agree to have their progress monitored very closely over a two year period. Most lose some weight (typically 10% of their body weight) before hunger takes over and they find themselves backsliding.

The chapters about this U Penn study alternate with others in which Kolata examines the science of why it's so hard to lose weight and keep it off. The short version: once a body begins to lose weight, it switches into a kind of starvation mode. It wishes to hold onto the fat it has and tricks the person into thinking they're hungrier than they actually are. These two things combined make it an uphill battle. Kolata cites a University of Minnesota study in which normal sized men suddenly ate half their usual calories. They lost weight, but soon began behaving bizarrely. They became obsessed with eating, consuming up to five times their usual amount of food. Others showed strange mood swings. This goes a long way in explaining why the weight comes back for those who have the obesity gene.

This book highlights studies that many people ignore. For instance, an eight year, $20 million study done by researchers at Johns Hopkins which attempted to stave off the obesity crisis in children. The reserachers deliberately selected high risk schools, where children were getting two meals a day. The program adjusted the fat content in food the children were being served (by about 10%), introduced more daily exercise, and educated the children about nutrition. These measures were not enough to lead to any weight loss.

Anyone who has ever lost weight knows why: it takes a lot of effort to lose even a little bit of weight. Light exercise does very little (although it may have other health benefits) and hunger is a very difficult thing to ignore. Kolata pushes for a more tolerant society, that accepts that weight loss is very difficult to maintain, and asks for an end to the inaccurate idea that weight loss is totally within everyone's control. Genetics are different, she concludes, and some people will have an easier time losing weight than others.

There really is no reason why these findings need be controversial. And, yet, they will be. The same day I finished the book, two national magazines came out with cover stories about women losing over 100 lbs each. These types of pieces are very popular --profiles of shiny happy weight loss success stories. The fact that most of these people will put the weight back on is never addressed. The fact that they are starving and miserable is glossed over in comments like "nothing tastes as good as it feels to be thin." Everyone loves a luck and pluck success story.

This is why "Rethinking Thin" is so important. Instead of putting a shiny gloss on hard facts, it gets to the bottom of things. It doesn't address every facet of this issue (it badly lacks a chapter on those rare successes at weight loss) but I highly recommend it. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year.

Suzanne Somers' Eat Great, Lose WeightI've been fighting a losing battle with my weight my entire life.But I've been on this program for about 8 days, and already I feel like a different person!I'm doing Weight Watchers (counting points) as well as Somersizing, and when I weighed in I had lost 7.6 lbs.And the food is wonderful and good for you!Unbelievable!I wish I could tell everyone about this way of eating.I want to go up to people in the grocery store and say "Don't buy that fat-free junk, there's a better way!"The public has been sold a load of BS by the diet industry.I don't know where the idea came from that fat is bad for you and fat-free processed junk food is good for you, but this book will change your way of thinking!
I think what worked for me is that I cut everything out at once... caffeine, sugar, white flour, and basically anything refined or processed.I'm not really sure whether my success is due to Suzanne's food combining theory, or that I just cut out carbs and sugar and started eating more veggies and lean meats.But I'm not going to mess with what seems to be working.The first few days I had a pretty bad headache, but now I feel great.I eat till I'm full and I have no sugar or carb cravings.I made it through Halloween and didn't eat a single piece of candy, which I couldn't believe, but I just didn't want it after reading about what sugar does to you!Now I have more energy than I've had in years, I sleep better at night, it's not as hard to get up in the morning, AND... here's the best part, I don't have the terrible stomach problems I used to have.

So first, I am a diet failure. I have failed on every diet I've ever tried so I was really nervous about trying this one and assumed that it too wouldn't work. And I was really shocked when I started to lose weight. And my family was too!!! So I kept a chart and this diet really worked (and it's still working!!)

So now I'm at 23 pounds (hoping to make 25 pounds by the New Year). But what's important (I think) is the many ways that it's changed me. At Thanksgiving the kids were shocked (I mean really shocked) when I started playing football and frisbee golf outside with them. I have so much more energy. I feel clearer (like my head is clearer). My husband says there's 4 or 5 inches gone from my waist. I've had to buy new clothes. And it's easy to travel with (I travel a lot) and to entertain with (entertain a lot too). You know exactly what you can and can't eat and you don't ever go hungry because it's really about what you eat (it's about the hormones).

So while I've tried lots of diets, this is the first one that's ever worked for me. And now I have a plan to have all the extra weight gone (I needed to lose 60 pounds in total...so am 1/3 of the way there) by my next birthday. And I think I can do it. It's all about balancing hormones. Got it!
