Foer really made me think and I decided to research the idea o vegan living.In the chapter about "Nasty Foods" Alicia Siverstone's observations about meat industry were in line with those of Mr. Foer.And she does a good job of backing her statements with well-conducted studies from reputable sources.

According to Alicia, in addition to meat, Nasty Foods include also dairy, refined sugar, and processed foods.These are the foods that we have to avoid in our daily diet.However, she realizes that it is very hard, if not impossible, for most people to just drop their normal nutritional habits and go totally vegan from one day to another.Therefore she suggests three levels of changing into Living in the Kind Life - from Flirting, via Going Vegan, to Becoming a Superhero.

Alicia insists that by eliminate harmful foods like meat, dairy, refined sugar and processed products, and enjoying an endless variety of deeply nourishing grains, vegetables and other delectable whole foods, you will live in agreement with nature and get rid of obesity problem that plagues the modern societies.By changing your eating habits and becoming vegan you will say good-bye to dieting once for all.And that's while enjoying "irresistibly sweet treats, you can eat every single day, forever."

I recently verified Alicia's statement on my recent trip to Central Europe.I discovered a restaurant chain called "Green Wave" that was serving plant foods only.Throughout the whole week I was consuming a variety of delicious meals not even once missing my traditional North American Big Burger.

By the end of the book Alicia provided some good (and some not so good) recipes of vegan meals.I suggest trying most of them to decide which ones suit you best. I wish I had had The Wall Street Diet then.One interesting aspect of this diet - and one that I would suggest might be the key to its success - is that it does not focus on exercise first.Instead, it asks you to analyze your eating habits to determine if you are a Controlled Eater (CE) or a Clean Plate Club (CPC) eater, and then it gives you practical tips for how to mazimize your eating plan to work with and not against your eating type and to reduce your calorie intake without too much pain.After all, losing weight is just math - 3,500 calories = 1 pound.

And that math is what Heather Bauer uses to focus first on diet and later on exercise.It can take an hour or two to burn off 500 calories, but 500 calories can be consumed in but a few moments.For someone who has limited time, controlling calories is a more efficient manner of losing weight than working off the weight.Plus, as Ms. Bauer recognizes, if you tell someone on Wall Street that they have to spend an hour or two in the gym every day, they may get frustrated very quickly when their schedule causes them to miss a few gym visits and throw the entire diet out the window.

Recognizing that Wall Street types cannot spend hours in the kitchen and eat only homemade, calorie-restricted foods, the author provides a wealth of information about what foods to eat at common fast food chains and other restaurants, what is best to order at various types of restaurants (e.g., steak houses) or takeout options (e.g., Chinese), on airplanes (and what to bring with you as snacks on flights), and also tips for how to get over jet lag, ways to get exercise while traveling, etc.I think this information is incredibly useful for ANYONE, not just those on "Wall Street," and I plan on using this information to help guide me to healthier choices every day.

Finally, it is important to note that Ms. Bauer does not completely disregard the importance of exercise.Rather, she says start with the diet, and then gradually work exercise into your busy schedule as best as you can.She offers examples of good exercise schedules (starting with 3, 20 minute cardio sessions a week), tips for workout videos, "fun" options that don't seem like "work" and that allow for family participation (Nintendo Wii), and good alternatives for frequent travelers (such as iTrain).Again, realistic rather than intimidating.

All-in-all, I think this is a very doable plan that will actually work - and work because it is something that people with full schedules and hectic lifestyles can follow and stick to.For those who are not on "Wall Street," I think the information in this book could also be very useful, particularly the analysis of the two types of eaters (CE and CPC).I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in losing weight without having weight loss take over their life.5 stars.

The Mayo Clinic Diet: Eat Well, Enjoy Life, Lose Weight [Hardcover]I have read through this book and find it to be a fascinating easy to follow program that will produce results!

The Mayo Clinic Diet Book starts out with a 2 week period of ADDING 5 Habits - BREAKING 5 Habits and ADOPTING 5 Habits.What I love about this method is that it is doable.That's right... it is simple steps that the journal (I love the journal!) helps you calculate and keep up on day to day.
The Journal has a Habit Tracker within it so you can put in your starting weight... and check off the habits you are applying each day.This is great for someone wired like me as I have to have the visual in front of me.... plus, I like goals...and challenges...
With great habits to remember like eating a healthy breakfast, fruits and vegies daily, eating whole grains, healthy fats - and my favorite habit:MOVE!That's right - get out there and well, MOVE!:)
In the two week period you will also be encouraged to break 5 habits and this is good to doccument as well - like no eating while watching TV (guilty!), No sugar, no snacks, only moderate meat and dairy, and no eating at restaurants.
Now this is just part of the journal habits to break.In the two week period if we focus on breaking these habits we are on our way to new and healthier ways to enjoy life...The back of the book has a break down of good carbs and healthy choices as well as recipes.This book will be one I can refer to again and again!

The book talks about what motivates us... find what will give you an ongoing, burning desire to succeed.For me - I love being fit.I feel better about myself, I have more energy and I am just better.I dont know any other way to describe it.In September of this past year I fell a little off my routine and have yet to get back into where I was.I started not eating as healthy and skipping some of my workouts.My time management became cluttered and now in January I find myself 7 pounds heaver than my usual 125 pounds.
So - in light of this review - a new year, a great read...I am starting this two week program today.I will probably do a recap at the end of the two weeks on how I did.This book has motivated me to do what I need to do to get back on track.Using the journal as a guide and the book to help me with those pitfalls I am looking forward to and expecting success.
I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book and cant say enough about the journal.Having a workbook that I need to keep track of what I am doing daily is a great motivator for me.

100 Weight-Loss Tips that Really WorkI am overweight and I needed a book that, in simple language, will guide me on the appropriate strategies to bring me to "normal" weight. After an exhaustive search, I came across this book and I have never regretted my decision to buy it.

I found the book easy to read and follow and the tips really make sense. I then went about implementing the advice given and it works for me. The book does not suggest quick fix solutions that often do not work and disappoint you but rather provides a methodical approach on what to eat and not to eat, how to effectively burn the fat through simple exercises like walking. The book also dispels many diet and exercise fallacies.

The only drawback with the book is that the author repeats himself often. This is not a major problem, however, as the repetition serves to remind the reader of the main points highlighted before.

Well, I have managed to lose 4 Kg in the past six weeks and I am on target to lose an extra 8 Kg to bring me to a normal, healthy weight with minimal risk of weight related diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease or diabetes.

I've always worked out for maybe 30-45 min. a day, but I would sit on my butt the rest of the day.This book had wonderful ideas on how to increase your movement throughout the day, not just in the 30 minutes I worked out.
My other problem is that I like food.I could not get used to the idea of giving up the food I like in order to lose weight.I think the best part of the book is the idea that you need to cut back on your food intake by 25% in order to acheive weight-loss.I eat what I like to eat, I just eat a little bit less at each meal.I have tried this over the past two weeks and I have lost 2 pounds and I am confident that they will stay off as long as I continue to follow the plan.
The pedometer is a great way to pace yourself throughout the day.I set goals for myself such as getting between 6000 and 7000 steps during work.It's a great way to keep moving.
It is not a quick, weight-loss gimmick or diet.I call it a "non-diet" because the authors offer ways to change your lifestyle in order to lose healthy amounts of weight in a reasonable timespan in order to acheive weight-loss for life.

The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for GoodThe Core Balance Diet is a must-read for women who have, well...gotten off balance (which would include probably 85-95% of American women). And Marcelle (with Genevieve) include six common ways that we have lost our balance: digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammatory, and detoxification. Which of us has not experienced imbalance in one of those areas, let alone two or three?

Marcelle challenges the woman who thinks she would be too overwhelmed to make some dietary and lifestyle changes: "If you could help your partner to lose weight, or help protect your child's health, by changing what he or she ate for a month, wouldn't you try and do it? Now, aren't you worth that same amount of attention?" And she is only asking you to try her program for a month! After that, she assures you, you'll be free from your food addictions and hooked on your feeling great!

Each chapter(which is delight to read even if they don't apply to you as much as the others) contains the following: information on the imbalance and how to correct it; sidebars and boxes with interesting tidbits of info; a list of "Marcelle's prescriptions " for that imbalance; diagnostic tests to note the progress of that imbalance; foods to include and foods to avoid; supplements to take; "a day in the life" schedule for the lifestyle changes needed (exercise, when to eat, self- nurturing, etc.); a one-week menu;and frequently asked questions.

There are also 60 pages of recipes. Except for the medical diagnostic tests, this is a complete do-it-yourself book.

True to the Hay House spirit, there is also a chapter on the mind-body connection with the cute title, "Your Issues Are in Your Tissues" which alerts you to negative thinking and self-destructive behavior patterns that can sabotage your health.

I have read hundreds of books on health and nutrition (even wrote one myself!) and I give this book a hearty two thumbs up! I learned lots of interesting tidbits, such as how the liver is taxed on a low-fat diet, how Vitamin D deficiency is linked to obesity, and how not flossing can lead to body-wide inflammation. The only thing Marcelle could do to make it more complete would be to have a chapter on the importance of eating more raw foods since a raw diet taxes the digestive system far less.

This is a diet that can be, with a bit of imagination, used by anyone who has any dietary slant (vegan, vegetarian, raw fooder, etc). For example, if one is raw vegan, substitute raw hemp protein powder in place of meat and don't cook the vegetables.

If you liked Mr. Kowalski's first program for controlling cholesterol, originally published in 1987, you will adore this book.When asking himself what had changed he noted, "Why, practically everything is new!" Mr. Kowalski reviews in detail the strengths and weaknesses of that program, describes the research that has been conducted on cardiovascular health since then, and shows you other risks in addition to cholesterol that must be addressed.He also debunks pseudo-science about cholesterol control.
What impressed me the most is that Mr. Kowalski's old and new programs have worked perfectly for him.Here is a man who had his first heart attack at age 35 and double bypass.He had a second heart attack at 41, followed by a quadruple bypass.In the foreword, cardiac surgeon Dr. Jack Sternlieb describes how the most rigorous tests of Mr. Kowalski's heart and arteries show that it has no blockages as of 1999.Without this program, Mr. Kowalski would probably have needed another bypass operation several years ago.His family record of heart disease is not a good one, and he probably has a genetic tendency to problems in this area.Mr. Kowalski is very physically active now, and has no limitations on his life style due to his cardiac history.
The new program has familiar elements in it, but is considerably less restrictive than the old one.You can eat a lot more foods, and a lot more fat (as long as it is the right kind of fat).The dietary guidelines are quite similar to the new ones brought out by the American Heart Association in 2000.
For most people, the diet features avoiding saturated fat and trans fatty acids, limiting overall fat to hold weight at a healthy level for your height, eating fish at least twice a week (especially fatty fish), lots of fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads and cereals, consuming soluble fiber, lots of fluids, limiting sugars and empty carbohydrates, and eating slowly.Exercise is 15 miles of walking a week.A variety of supplements are encouraged (especially antioxidents, B vitamins, minerals, polysterols, and pantathine).Don't smoke.Limit alcohol consumption to moderate daily levels, but do not imbibe solely for the cardiovascular benefit.Take one aspirin a day if your stomach can handle it.
I liked the candor in the book quite a lot.For example, "I'm a little embarrassed when I look at the subtitle of the original book, which promises `no deprivation.'"
In addition to the overall recommendations, each element is described in detail including the scientific studies that support why it works, who should not follow the recommendation, how to work with your doctor for the best results, side effects that can occur, and how these recommendations compare with the various prescription medications now available for lowering cholesterol.He also describes how these recommendations affect other factors for cardiovascular risk such as the amount of low-density lipoprotein (a negative component of overall cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein (a positive component of overall cholesterol), triglycerides, homocysteine, and C-reactive proteins.The section on niacin (B-3) was particularly interesting since it involves changing liver functions, and you are encouraged to work with your doctor in this area.I was not familiar with the "niacin flush" but was glad to learn that the newer versions usually avoid that problem.I especially found the discussions of the special issues that women, young people, and seniors have to be helpful.

Natural Health & Weight Loss (Paperback) Review

Natural Health & Weight LossThere are three macronutrients in our diet: fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Only two are essential and carbohydrateisn't one of them.

It was mostly the sincerity of Dr. Groves' previous two books that prompted me to order his latest one, sight unseen and not a review in sight.

I was not disappointed.
For those unacquainted with the truth in matters of human nutrition, the contents of Natural Health And Weight Loss will raise some eyebrows.
Yes, Groves is right, if there are any culprits to be found in our nutrients, macro- or micro-, it is the carbohydrates. Notably the refined ones but also an excess of complex starches.

The roots of this book can be found in his 1999 publication Eat Fat And Get Thin but even starchy origins can bring about a veritable treasure, in this case a very practical book. The chapters are arranged in logical fashion and the pages contain a wealth of information and only few bits of clutter.

The subject matter of this is low carbohydrate dieting. Many books have been written on this, starting with Banting's original classic Letter Of Corpulence, to Atkins and other imitations. Like the author, I was inspired by British physician Richard Mackarness whose book Eat Fat And Grow Slim was published some 50 years ago. Written for the average blokes and sheilas (whom Mackarness called Mr. and Mrs. Fatten-Easily), it remains a classic. Dr. Groves attempted to go a step further, I believe. He educates the reader on the complex subject matter and demands a measure of concentration from those who are not well schooled in life science subjects. Yet, lazy couch potatoes and recliner pumpkins may skip the science and use the book as a manual.

Practicing meticulous attention to detail, Dr. Groves leaves no stone unturned in presenting evidence for what he espouses as the diet that will keep humans healthy. Rightlyhe emphasizes the crucial importance of the little known fact that it is FATS that are our most valuable foods and that the correct diet is not high protein but high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate . To the uninitiated, this book undoubtedly flies in the face of current wisdom. The self-appointed guardians of our health (who themselves have had precious little training in nutrition)keep presenting us with the same old faulty diet pyramids in the mistaken belief that adherence will contribute to the good health of society.

Well, as they say, the proof is in the pudding (which is not on Dr. Groves' list of preferred foods) and the verdict is in: The low carb way of eating works!

Once the reader gets into the 15th chapter (s)he will be aware that there is nothing strange about eating high fat, low carb fare. After all, humans evolved on it. A list of diseases is given that appear to have their origin in the consumption of excess carbohydrates and the subject of insulin and glucose excess and the resultant malfunctions are well covered. Groves goes into the limited usefulness of the Glycaemic Index and he provides information for diabetics.

On the basis of the astonishing amount of good information contained in 350 odd pages alone, this book deserves to be read by the Fatten-Easy crowd as well as those just curious.

I did think that the idea about throwing away food was not a good idea after dinner - instead freeze the leftovers and reheat the next day. This will allow you more time to exercise because you won't be spending so much time cooking. There is a morning motivation, before dinner hypnosis and a bedtime hypnosis.

Through listening to the three CDs, you can convince yourself that weight loss is a worthwhile achievement and you can start to reprogram your mind so your metabolism increases and your self-confidence is renewed.

If you prefer not to put yourself in a trance (it feels more like relaxing into words), you can just listen to the CDs while fully present and gain a sense of what it will take to make an ally of your subconscious. You can use positive affirmations and many of the ideas to establish healthier habits over time. A booklet is included with additional tips and techniques for lifestyle changes.

Coming from a person like her, you can rest assured that this is not a fad, unbalanced diet. She is a vibrant, healthy, energetic person.

What I particularly like is that she has a great deal of sympathy and understanding of the challenges facing a person who is struggling with their weight and their health, and understands how intimidating it is to make that huge transition from a Standard American Diet to mostly raw vegan.

The best thing about the book is that each day's eating is completely laid out, so you don't have to fill your head with planning and making decisions.Just do what she says, and you'll very quickly 'get it' - because in the end, it's all very very simple.And you will feel so much healthier and cleaner (not to mention thinner!) very quickly.Within days.Once you 'get it', it's easy to use the book as a guide for taking over and planning for yourself.

There are lots of great raw cookbooks out there, but this explains the basics of what to eat, how much and when.So it's great for beginners.

She doesn't insist that you eat 100% raw, and has great suggestions for common concerns like cold weather, travelling, and eating out.

The book is very well-researched, and has a great deal of scientific information if you want it. There are easy to use charts. And she explains the big 'protein question' that always comes up - ie how do you get enough.

There are recipes for nutrient-packed and yet simple to prepare foods, with great sympathy for those of us who don't have a lot of time in the day.Nothing is very difficult to put together, and they are appealing to non-raw diners as well (who, if you didn't tell them what you were serving, probably wouldn't notice, and might even congratulate you on the quality of your hummus and hungrily devour the nut creams and desserts).

She goes on to explore and recommend special equipment like juicers and dehydrators, which might be useful additions to your kitchen if you continue to eat in this vein.

Overall, an excellent introduction to the new healthy you.My criticisms are minor, but I did find it a little hard to navigate without reading from cover to cover.And I would have preferred color photographs, to enhance the recipe pages. I'd recommend this book if your current food-style isn't creating the health and life you want to have.

First of all, it is more about strength exercise than anything else.That's definitely important, but telling folks who are way overweight and totally out of shape to do push ups on day one is totally demoralizing! Lots of the exercises are just too demanding and complex for those of us who aren't accustomed to regular workouts.Plus the table for the interval cardio sessions is way too complicated, again, for those of us who want to genuinely change our lifestyle but have a long way to go.

The best thing in the book is the five-minute stretch routine.

When I got to the week 2 menus and recipes, she started repeating.I feel cheated!Half the reason I bought such a book was for the menus and recipes; but I really only got maybe 8-9 days worth, if that, due to the repetition.Not to mention that eating the same foods in week two that I ate in week one isn't very interesting to someone who is trying to turn over a new leaf.

Then there's her tone.She makes it clear that she's a trainer, has exercised her entire life, is stimulated by getting up early to exercise . . . you get the picture. How encouraging is that to those of us who haven't exercised much at all and have to fight our resistance to it every single day?She's just way too perky about something that's a constant struggle. I doubt she has a clue what it's like to be fat and out of shape, and she doesn't do a thing to motivate me to want to change my habits.In fact, she demoralized me.

This book would probably be fine for someone who already is into exercise and just wants to do some toning.For those of us who are seriously overweight and out of shape, this book is discouraging. There have got to be more realistic and encouragingbooks out there. I usually enjoy health and weight books published by Rodale for Prevention Magazine, but this one is a total bust for me.

It has motivated and equipped me to make choices in 'when I eat', as well as in my nutrition, exercise, sleeping, and other patterns that have already produced a weight loss of nearly 25 lbs, a lean, more rested body, and great optimism toward the future. I'm feeling and acting stronger, younger, and just plain happier. I know many many people whose bodies can't keep up with their dreams, who have repeatedly tried and failed to slim down, and have just given up hope. I am updating this since I have been following this book for another year since my review.I have EASILY held my weight loss and am down another five pounds.I am at my perfect weight.I don't even have to try to keep my weight where I want it - it is just so natural and easy.Something really does change with your desire when you follow this method, and you no longer need to fight temptation, you just don't want to eat at night or eat unhealthy foods anymore.I feel sorry for and frustrated with people I care about who are overweight since they think they cannot live without their nightly dinner ritual. I see them waddling around with their health issues and aging bodies, while I feel more youthful and athletic every day. I also highly recommend the new 3: 00 PM SECRET 10-DAY DREAM DIET.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone on a low carb diet who does not have access to the Internet, or who does not have the time or patience to weed through millions of posts on Internet support boards in order to find those few pearls of wisdom that are always hiding among a proliferation of other posts.

This is where you get the real nitty-gritty -- the lowdown on how much weight you can really expect to lose on a typical low carbohydrate plan, the definition of a true stall and plateau versus the typical periods of slow or no loss that plague all of us, and a discussion of "whooshes" as well as "set points" and "natural body weights" that are difficult to move beyond. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of how muscle growth masks fat loss, and how, as we all know, "scales are for fish".
The book goes on to discuss how water retention masks fat loss.She explains it very well: since a pint is a pound the world around, the weight of the water that we drink and retain fluctuates daily.
Another very valuable section has been devoted to the subject of hidden carbs.Very few of the official diet plan books even touch upon this so-important subject. This book includes images of actual nutritional labels, and it drives this important point home very well.
The author has cleverly combined the advice of many successful dieters into one easy-to-read narrative. Bravo, Laura Richard!

This is a simple, to the point book about apple cider vinegar. I was wanting to learn about how to use ACV and why, but not to the point of devoting hours to reading a lengthy book about the subject. This book was perfect.

It covers a history of ACV, how to make it, and how to use it for weight loss, staying healthy, and beauty regimes. It also discusses cooking with ACV and has 25 or so recipes. It has a chapter containing numerous ailments and how to use ACV to help each one. It is less than 100 pages (and the main content itself about 40 pages, the ailment section about 20 pages, and the rest recipes).
The main way to use ACV as explained here is to take 1t-2t in a glass of water three times per day before meals. But the book is worth buying for all of the interesting variations and explanations. I will make it a part of my reference collection and probably use it often.

Rose Elliot did a great job on this book.The book is well balanced with readable information, very useful quick reference charts, menus, recipes, a few encouraging testimonies along the way. She does provide vegan alternatives to the lacto-vegetarian choices. And, best of all, it is an easy inexpensive way to lose weight on a low carb diet.

Her commonsense approach to recipes means you can make them with food typically on hand and quickly. Typically, most of the prep work can be done in a few minutes.And, you can expand on them as you learn the basic techniques.As I've worked my way through the book, one of my favorite recipes is her spaghetti squash using cream cheese with spices.

It literally only takes ten minutes to steam the squash in the microwave then fold in the cheese with spices.You can use already prepared cheese with herbs and spice mixes from the store.Or, you can use Philadelphia cream cheese and have your own ethnic flavors from Mexican to Indian, to Italian Garlic-Parmesan etc. And, you can use almost any steamed vegetable that has been thin sliced.It is a nice break from tomato sauces and there are never any leftovers.

This book is definitely a keeper!
