Dr. Cohens New Hippocratic Diet GuideI hate diets. Suffering and deprivation is not something I do well. After being diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, it was clear the extra weight had to go. Bariatric surgery was not an option I would consider, soooo what to do ? I was advised that Dr Cohen was advocating a low carbohydrate diet that goes beyond popular diets such as Atkins. The alternative serious weight loss programs in town were expensive calorie based programs that wanted me to buy thier expensive diet food. Suffering and going broke seemed a bad idea. I chose Dr Cohen and his diet which is published in this book. It is a serious, scientific, yet practical approach that makes sense and is easy to both monitor and execute. In approximately 18 months I lost 112 lb and I am still losing. I am never hungry. You can test easily with ketone strips to see if your body is in the fat burning mode and adjust accordingly. It helps to eliminate temptations around the house.

The Simple 0-to-10 GI Diet: Lose Weight with the Easy Food Scoring System Based on the Glycemic Index [Paperback]This is my favorite book when it comes to weight loss. I have used it twice with great success. After the birth of my first baby I needed to lose 15 lbs and after the birth of my second baby I needed to lose 25 lbs to be back to my pre pregnancy weight. I used the book both times and I use it to make my food choices pretty much every day.

The authors have taken the calorie content of each food and given it a GI Score from 0 to 10 (based on the sugar, protein and fat content, not just the effect it has on your blood sugar).
They have a detailed listing of various foods along with their GIS. For the first phase (2 weeks of quick weight loss) you are allowed to eat 17 points (for women). After the two weeks you move onto the second phase od slower weight loss and you are allowed to eat 20 points. Once you have reached your happy weight you can eat 20 points.
The first couple of weeks on this plan are a bit tough because you have to look up all the foods and add up the points, but after a while it becomes very easy as we tend to repeat a lot of the foods that we eat.
They do have some sample menus and recipes to make it easier for the fist few days.
On this plan you can eat anything you want as long as you stay with-in your point allotment. This book will eventually lead you to good nutrition. As you can guess vegetables and fruits have the lowest GIS and you would want to choose a lot of those in addition to some lean meat, legumes, small quantities of nuts and whole grains.
The authors have a very easy formula to follow VVPC (veggie, veggie, protein, carb)
Divide your plate in 4 and fill it with two parts of veggies, one part lean protein and one part carbs. Doesn't get easier than that.

By keeping my meals smple and easy I have had great success with this diet. I don't feel deprived of anything. Once I lost all the weight that I wanted to lose the book eased me back into eating larger portions or having a treat now and then without going on a binge and gaining all the weight back. By exercising and following this diet, my body looks much better toned now, than it did before I was ever pregnant even though I am at the same weight.

Note to the previuos reviewer. I have tried steamed ground beef. It's actually very tasty with some tomato sauce.

The Round DietI love this book.

From planning, shopping, recipes and following-through advice, this book gives the reader several information to aide them. I felt like she answered a lot of questions a dieter may have in relation to a step by step guide to a healthy way of eating.

I like that she incorporated cartoons and pictures to help the reader visualize the "round" experience.It made it so fun to go through the book.

There is so much more about this diet than just loosing weight.It's easy, innovative, and it will keep you healthy.

Dr. Atkins' Revised Diet Package: The Any Diet Diary and Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution 2002 [Hardcover]After 30 years and hundreds of millions of dollars of research, the medical establishment has failed to show any link between dietary fat and weight gain, or for that matter, heart disease. Furthermore, no one can explain where the "low-fat" belief came from: apparently it has never had any foundation in science. Thirty years of pain and frustration, not to mention an incipient diabesity epidemic, have led many of the American public to become sceptical and despondent at ever gaining control of their health. Meanwhile, for thirty years Dr. Atkins has been prescribing what used to be accepted belief for diabetes and other endocrinary problems: the source of weight gain is carbohydrate, not fat, and his results have been undeniably successful.
His books first gained attention during the early eighties, and were lumped among the other "high-protien" diet schemes which were quickly discredited. But Dr. Atkin's quiet conviction, many pages of scholarly research references, and consistently mounting anecdotal evidence have now built to a small mountain of persuasion which cannot be simply refuted. His theory is based on a commonsense understanding of the insulin cycle which has somehow escaped the researchers. He convincingly debunks the supposed risks of his program as far safer than the low-fat, high-carb recommendations currently in fashion.
Earlier editions include more scientific background, particularly the fascinating fifteenth chapter on the heart, which expertly critiques the famous Harvard Nurses Study, among others. A bedrock of current dietary belief, this study completely ignored the effect of sugar on diet because the researchers "presumed" sugar had nothing to do with it, contradicting their own results. This chapter alone should open many scaled-over scientific eyes, and rightly cause much rethinking. I challenge you to read it with an open mind, and judge for yourself the evidence, based on strict science and observable results.
Drawbacks: He has not made a clear enough distinction between a high-protien diet, which he nowhere directly advocates, and a low-carb diet, which he does. It is not necessary to follow his 4-step program or take expensive supplements, though these are helpful and recommendable. He is a practicing cardiologist, not a researcher, so he must rely on others to do the necessary research to develop credibility. He should drop the hyperbolic "revolution" title, which sounds like shallow promotionalism. His biggest setback has been to accuse the American Medical Association and American Heart Association directly of bad practice, which has turned a scientific debate into a blood feud, and slowed down acceptance of his theory. We have a long while to wait for the marketing system to provide affordable low-carb products.
Ultimate take-away: low-carb is good science, and low-fat has been a 30-year old-wives tale. The medical establishment should drop their defensive posture, which only sets back the credibility of the scientific community and keeps us all in bondage to out-of-date beliefs. If you want a balanced controlled-carb diet with little explanation, go with Barry Sears' "The Zone". If you want to really understand and thereby control the mechanism behind weight loss, hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, Atkins' book is a medical watershed.
