Winning After Losing: Keep Off the Weight You've Lost--Forever [Bargain Price]Anyone who dismisses this book as superficial you-can-do-it-if-you-try stuff isn't willing to do the work to keep off the weight. Come on, Stacey lost over 350 pounds and is keeping it off -- she doesn't do it by simply thinking positive. She tells us how she does do it, and if it works for her, as addicted as she was, it ought to work for anyone willing to do the work. Personally, I found her book very inspiring, and it's given me concrete methods that have been easier for me to latch on to than methods I've seen in any other book. I urge anyone who may be killing herself with food to try this book. It may be your best chance at saving your life. (And by the way, I didn't see a single spelling or grammatical error in the entire book, and I'm a professional editor.)

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss---and the Myths and Realities of Dieting [Paperback] Review

Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss---and the Myths and Realities of Dieting [Paperback]Gina Kolata's "Rethinking Thin" deserves a place on the best-seller list.It is a comprehensive and highly readable examination of why most diets fail. Her thesis is rooted in science and research dating back as far as the 1940s. Many of her findings will be no surprise to people who have struggled with their weight. Kolata's bottom line: genetics play a far bigger role in weight than will power, exercise, or food choices.

The book begins with details of a University of Pennsylvania study. A group of obese volunteers are divided into two groups (one using the Atkins diet, the other a low calorie diet) and agree to have their progress monitored very closely over a two year period. Most lose some weight (typically 10% of their body weight) before hunger takes over and they find themselves backsliding.

The chapters about this U Penn study alternate with others in which Kolata examines the science of why it's so hard to lose weight and keep it off. The short version: once a body begins to lose weight, it switches into a kind of starvation mode. It wishes to hold onto the fat it has and tricks the person into thinking they're hungrier than they actually are. These two things combined make it an uphill battle. Kolata cites a University of Minnesota study in which normal sized men suddenly ate half their usual calories. They lost weight, but soon began behaving bizarrely. They became obsessed with eating, consuming up to five times their usual amount of food. Others showed strange mood swings. This goes a long way in explaining why the weight comes back for those who have the obesity gene.

This book highlights studies that many people ignore. For instance, an eight year, $20 million study done by researchers at Johns Hopkins which attempted to stave off the obesity crisis in children. The reserachers deliberately selected high risk schools, where children were getting two meals a day. The program adjusted the fat content in food the children were being served (by about 10%), introduced more daily exercise, and educated the children about nutrition. These measures were not enough to lead to any weight loss.

Anyone who has ever lost weight knows why: it takes a lot of effort to lose even a little bit of weight. Light exercise does very little (although it may have other health benefits) and hunger is a very difficult thing to ignore. Kolata pushes for a more tolerant society, that accepts that weight loss is very difficult to maintain, and asks for an end to the inaccurate idea that weight loss is totally within everyone's control. Genetics are different, she concludes, and some people will have an easier time losing weight than others.

There really is no reason why these findings need be controversial. And, yet, they will be. The same day I finished the book, two national magazines came out with cover stories about women losing over 100 lbs each. These types of pieces are very popular --profiles of shiny happy weight loss success stories. The fact that most of these people will put the weight back on is never addressed. The fact that they are starving and miserable is glossed over in comments like "nothing tastes as good as it feels to be thin." Everyone loves a luck and pluck success story.

This is why "Rethinking Thin" is so important. Instead of putting a shiny gloss on hard facts, it gets to the bottom of things. It doesn't address every facet of this issue (it badly lacks a chapter on those rare successes at weight loss) but I highly recommend it. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year.

Eat It Up! The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss Surgery (Paperback) Review

Eat It Up The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss SurgeryI am a weight loss surgery patient and I've been looking for this kind of book and help for years! I found myself nodding my head, highlighting sentences and paragraphs, and feeling understood. There is a huge void in the world of weight loss surgery that is seldom being filled. Those of us who are 3 or more years out of the surgery come to realize that it isn't about losing the weight, but keeping it off and that means dealing with the mental and psychological issues surrounding food, eating and exercise. The literature and follow-up provided seldom addresses those issues. This book does. And Dr. Stapleton has done it in a way that is very accessible. She lays out the issues one by one and gives examples, how our minds tend to work (or don't work), ideas for change and even exercises at the end of the chapters to help us get on the right track to change how we think and do.It's an important book to read and digest wherever you are on your journey toward a healthier life through weight loss, but especially helpful to those of us who are struggling. I've been recommending this book to my friends and coaching clients and highly recommend it to anyone with eating issues. It's a great companion to my own book "Fat No More - Long Term Success Following Weight Loss Surgery" which addresses many of the physical issues and some of the mental issues facing weight loss surgery patients.

Extraordinary Taste [Paperback] Review

Extraordinary Taste [Paperback]I love this book.I had WLS in April of 2007 and the recipes in this book are perfect for the stage I am in right now.The recipes keep the meat moist and easy for a RNY patient to eat.The foods are not bland though, and I love spicy. My favorites are the "Fiery Cheeseburger" and "Chicken Verde Quiche".Fantastic!!!The author uses easy to find and inexpensive ingredients. She is not promoting an online business that sells expensive protein powders and vitamins.Don't get me wrong I love my protein shakes and find them to be an invaluable way to get the recommended protein in, but it is refreshing to find a bariatric recipe book that is not hawking anything. She just offers easy, healthy and delicious recipes.I wish I had purchased this sooner...it is my new favorite and I have a lot of cookbooks.

Product Description:
The adage says most people won't take action until their back is up against the wall and there's nothing to do but come out swinging. My back was against the wall! But it wasn't the fact that I had sleep apnea and needed a machine just so I could draw a breath. It also wasn't the fact that I could not cross my legs; shop for clothes in regular stores; walk for more than ten minutes without my back killing me; participate in sport activities, or even sit in an airplane without a seat belt extender. I, like many of you reading this book, was already numb to all the jokes from little kids or stares from adults, so those things never became a factor of the day I knew. The day I knew that I had to do something -- the day that I absolutely had to lose weight -- was when I couldn't even wipe my own backside. When you can't even reach around your own massive belly, or reach behind your own back to clean yourself, something has got to be done. At that point I was well over 450 pounds. It was an embarrassing secret that I thought I would take to my grave! No matter what made you choose this drastic change in your body and lifestyle, you should be proud of yourself for making the decision. Contrary to popular belief, surgery is not the easy way out. It's a major life altering choice that you and your family will have to live with for the rest of your lives. But, what a life you now have to live! This book will tell the story of an overweight child who became an obese adult and then decided to do something about it when his back was against the wall. Also, with help of an expert in her field, we'll show you how to achieve your goal weight and maintain it through the proper diet and exercise long after the first incision was ever made.

The Expert's Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery: Is it right for me? What happens during surgery? How do I keep the weight off? [Bargain Price] (Hardcover) Review

The Expert's Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery: Is it right for me What happens during surgery How do I keep the weight off [Bargain Price]Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) can be a confusing thing. Am I a candidate? Do I qualify? Do I even *want* to do it? It's like a maze that needs to be navigated through to the end. If you're lucky, you have a terrific support - but that doesn't change the fact that it can be a long and exhausting process...just to get TO the surgery! Then the aftermath begins a whole new confusing time.

Garth Davis is a doctor who primarily does WLS in his practice, along with his father. Apparently (I didn't know this before I bought the book), their practice is featured on the TLC show "Big Medicine".He has taken his extensive knowledge and research and written this book, in an attempt to help potential WLS patients answer the many questions that exist.

The Expert's Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery is an excellent resource, both for anyone contemplating the surgery and/or for anyone who has questions following a friend/family member's surgery. He lays out everything in detail, and in chapters that make sense in their organization. And he manages to do it in a language that is not overly technical, but rather like the conversation you might have if your next-door neighbor were a surgeon...friendly and full of information.

Dr. Davis starts out immediately in the introduction, explaining why he chose to write the book. He says that as someone who has become in the public eye, he is frequently stopped by people with questions. This took is his attempt at answering all those questions. He is also VERY clear - WLS is *not* a magic cure-all. It takes a lot of thought, a lot of preparation and a ton of commitment to change the destructive behaviors that have gotten most patients where they are.

These are the remaining chapters:
One - The Costs of Obesity : He discusses the official definitions of obesity, BMI , and the economic, social and physical costs of obesity. He covers many of the co-morbidities and their associated effects on the body.

Two - How We Got Here - and Why What We're Doing Now Isn't Working: He discusses some of the newest research into why WLS can be so incredibly successful for patients, including the chemicals and hormones (such as ghrelin) that affect the body in obese patients. There is some absolutely fascinating information here - such as the nugget that a surgical body in Europe recently had a convention to discuss whether or not WLS can/should be done on patients with diabetes. This is one of the best chapters in the book.

From there, the other chapters go into the different kinds of WLS, and their associated benefits and risks. He makes no bones about being a bigger believer in the bypass than the band and explains why, but he is very thorough in giving information for both. How to find a doctor, navigating insurance and preparing for surgery (another excellent chapter) precede chapter Nine, called The Big Day. He goes through every step of the process, including what your loved ones should expect. He is also VERY careful to explain that your surgeon's recommendations should ALWAYS come first.

Then comes everything after the surgery - the basics, diet schedule, the "honeymoon" period, exercise, emotions, excess skin, negotiating pitfalls and then the conclusion...all in their own chapters. There are also 7 terrific appendixes, including one that is a letter his practice often uses with insurance companies.

Now, if you've read this far, I commend you. This was longer than I intended it to be, but to shorten the review would not do the book justice. There is simply *so* much information, presented incredibly well and in the least confusing way possible. If you (or a loved one) are thinking about having this surgery, then I highly recommend that you make this book part of your research reading. It will hold your hand along the way and become one of the reference materials that you will come back to again and again.

Product Description:
From the star of TLC's Big Medicine, the complete guide to weight loss surgery

Today, an estimated forty-four million Americans suffer from obesity. For most, the traditional prescription of 'eat less, exercise more' simply doesn't work. Thankfully, there is another option- a proven path to reclaiming quality of life, to curing diabetes and other weight-related diseases, and to living without the constant emotional and physical struggles that being obese entails.

This option is weight loss surgery. Having performed more than one thousand weight loss surgeries in his career, Dr. Garth Davis-star of the hit TLC series Big Medicine-knows, firsthand, the surgery's ability to transform lives. In The Expert's Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, Dr. Davis combines cutting-edge medical advice and compassionate guidance into what promises to be the definitive handbook on the topic.

The book features a user-friendly breakdown of the various types of weight loss surgeries available today (gastric bypass vs. adjustable gastric banding vs. sleeve gastrectomy); a no-nonsense guide to finding the right doctor; and words of wisdom from dozens of patients who have undergone WLS. Most important, because weight loss surgery alters the digestive tract's size and structure, Dr. Davis lays out a complete diet and exercise plan to help ensure that readers' success is long term. This book should be required reading for anyone seeking a permanent obesity cure.

Before & After, Revised Edition: Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss SurgeryJust got my book in the mail today and I've not put it down.I am a post RNY surgery patient and I bought Ms. Leach's original book at the start of my journey almost 3 years ago.I bought several books on the surgery but found Ms. Leach's to be my bible. This book offers a soft cover which makes it easier to lay open on the counter when using her recipes (the book actually stays open to the page). You can't beat the price. The valuable information contained in the book is a must for anyone considering the surgery, recovering from the surgery or like me 3 years post op.Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Product Description:

At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn't lie in bed without gasping for air, wasn't able to fit into a restaurant booth, and could barely buckle the belt in an airplane seat. It would have been easier to allow life to pass her by than to continue fighting her weight problem, but she made the difficult decision to take back control. In 2001, Susan underwent gastric bypass surgery and started on a journey that would not only cut her body weight in half but would change her life.

Before & After is both a memoir and a cookbook-an intimate account of Leach's own transformation as well as a guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure. As Leach has learned in the six years since her operation, weight-loss surgery is not an event with a finish line or a goal weight-it is the beginning of a new way of life.

This edition of Before & After has been updated with all that Leach has learned on her post-op journey. It includes a foreword by Leach's surgeon, advice from a nutritionist, answers to more frequently asked questions about weight-loss surgery, a whole chapter on meal plans for different post-operative stages, suggested menus for early food stages, additional questions and answers affecting longer-term post-ops, and new information about products that have entered the marketplace.

Most notably, this edition showcases a wealth of new recipes that utilize the latest in light and healthy ingredients for smart and savory results, including everything from Asian Meatballs with Peanut Sauce and Turkey Tenderloin with Apple Chipotle Chutney to sugar-free Pistachio Gelato and Lemon Almond Sponge Cake. Each recipe makes about four servings, but includes a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Leach has recipes for every step of the way, from tastes-like-the-real-thing milk shakes for those first post-op days to an entire Thanksgiving menu.

Before & After is a journal of Leach's own inspirational story, where she shares her ups and downs, her tips and techniques, but mostly it's a book of hope for anyone who has a serious weight problem.
