The Palm Beach Lifestyle Diet: A Healthy Way of Eating and You'll Lose Weight Too!!!: So Easy to Follow and No Exercising or Calorie-Counting (Paperback) Review

The Palm Beach Lifestyle Diet: A Healthy Way of Eating and You'll Lose Weight Too: So Easy to Follow and No Exercising or Calorie-CountingI'll be the first to admit I could lose a few pounds (Wisconsin, the land of cheese, beer and sausage, is not Palm Beach) so I look at books like this with genuine interest. The first thing to catch my eye is the promise on the cover that this involves "No Exercising or Calorie-Counting." Next, I learned that its author, Hal Tartar, at 77 set off in a cross-country camping trip, at 82 fell in love with a woman 17 years his junior and together they traveled across Europe. Now at 90 he's published a book based on conversations with cooks and housekeepers of the wealthy he had while working as a property and estate manager on Palm Beach Island. Oh yeah, he also lost 25 pounds in three weeks by practicing what he is now preaching here.

Mostly the book is recipes. But I love the mouth-watering details. In "Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Spinach and Parmesan," for example, he adds, "Splash with dry white wine. Sprinkle liberally with pepper and lightly with tarragon. Spray with olive oil." Time to get up from my computer and check out the refrigerator! But there is also some sage advice that's easy to digest. He advocates, if you get hungry between meals, nibble on a stick of low-fat mozzarella cheese or some cut-up veggies, however don't eat anything after 8PM. He orders us to set a date for starting the diet and get rid of all the foods on the list to be avoided the first two weeks (potatoes, pasta, bread, etc.).

So what sold me? "Portion control applies only to dinner." and "If you eat out, just enjoy and get back on track the next day." But I also believed him when he said a person can experiment using plenty of herbs and spices to minimize salt and fat. Besides helpful tips there are ideas for easy but healthy lunch items, simple snacks, simple dishes, time saving suggestions and what is best to order when eating out, plus menus and recipes for the initial two weeks of the diet, and for the time after two weeks. Good stuff.

May we all have as long and delicious a life as Hal Tartar.

Product Description:
Hal Tartar was an estate manager in Palm Beach, Florida, for many years. He met residents and their cooks and housekeepers, too. Hal was always interested in cooking, and so he asked a lot of questions. He discovered the healthy residents ate plenty of vegetables, plenty of fresh fruits, and some protein and carbs. Hal decided to apply that way of eating to himself because he was about twenty-five pounds overweight, and so he created The Palm Beach Lifestyle Diet. The diet is based on the principle that one meal can consist of vegetables and another meal can consist of fruit. The first two weeks of the diet are crucial. After that, a lot of flexibility applies. This book contains unusual and delicious recipes and many wonderful tips. The emphasis is on healthy eating with weight loss as a bonus. There is no exercising and no calorie counting.
