The Four-Day Win: End Your Diet War and Achieve Thinner Peace [Bargain Price] (Paperback) Review

The Four-Day Win: End Your Diet War and Achieve Thinner Peace [Bargain Price]I'm a huge fan of Martha Beck's life coaching column in Oprah's magazine, so I grabbed this book to help me lose those last ten pounds. It definitely isn't the same old plate of beans--put your fork down after every bite!Use a smaller plate!Instead, it explains the latest findings in brain research, and how we're hard-wired to respond to dieting the way our ancient selves responded to any other kind of stress--by storing fat. No wonder the usual dieting always fails. Martha shows you how to "retrain your brain" with different exercises that won't make your body go into that stress response. She teaches you how to talk back to those voices in your head--the Dictator ("You WILL lose weight!") and the Wild Child ("Yeah, MAKE me!").She shows you how to SIN (substitute inedible nourishment), so that every time you don't eat, you have to do something else small and nice for yourself, so losing weight doesn't feel like punishment.I've never seen this kind of advice anywhere.Plus the book is really, really funny.

Mind Your Own Wellness: Turning Thoughts Into Reality (Paperback) Review

Mind Your Own Wellness: Turning Thoughts Into RealityThis may be the most relaxing book I've read.Alex Ong's tone is supremely authoritative yet as patient as a caring father. The result is magic.

In Mind Your Own Wellness, Ong accumulated an immeasurable quantity and quality of information regarding nutrition, psychology and human nature, biology, disease and aging, the food industry in the U.S., stress, wellness, self-esteem and wealth. He shaped this information and presented it in the most positive and accessible manner imaginable. In doing so, Ong has given us a great gift that far exceeds the price of the book.

No short cuts to increased energy and confidence were provided.Perhaps none exists but that is probably for the good since we're prone to stress ourselves attempting to find solutions using shortcuts. The focus is on the way we think coupled with solid information about food and the world we inhabit.Lessons from this book make us like quarry that escapes the prey (debilitating diseases and painful conditions) because we've learned to run (eat the healthy foods and avoid the truly unhealthy foods).

The brilliance of this book is in its approach.Ong uses his background in martial arts and philosophy to direct us to change in positive ways.He teaches us to see pain in junk food, for example, using these techniques.Imagine seeing pain in unhealthy foods. That's something this book did for or even to me through its descriptions of how junk food affects the body and ends up causing physical and psychological pain.Ong decodes messages of food industry advertisements in a way that greatly reduces their power to influence the mind, what he calls junky food voices. Two inner voices are revealed, the healthy food voice and the junky food voice. These inner voices are always in conflict as they compete to influence our choices and behavior.Once we understand these voices, we can begin to deal with them in a calm and far-sighted manner.

Mind Your Own Wellness is organized in a way that makes it a page-turner yet touches all the bases in the quest to live a better life with a focus on the effects of all types of foods on the human condition. Many thought processes in this book, which seem packaged to get into long-term memory with the least resistance, are life-changing even in isolation.Instructions on how to drink water include temperature, timing, quantity, association with other variables, and type were profound.Protein sources and their affect on calcium contradicted my cherished beliefs.Breathing fundamentals increased my awareness of my current stress levels.Organic apple cider vinegar was a big surprise. The section on labels got me immediately looking at labels of food items in the house and made me understand that food labeling, while extraordinarily valuable, is a political construct."No trans fat per serving" means there may be trans fat if you have more than one serving, for example. The financial gearing within simple food choices took me well beyond the reasoning that I had worked out on my own.I am certain any individual will find subjects covered that even in isolation would make reading this book worthwhile.

Not wanting to sound gushing in my endorsement of this book, I've actually held back.I've ordered this book for family members as gifts and will keep mine to review chapters from time to time.I highly recommend Mind Your Own Wellness.

The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for Good (Paperback) Review

The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for GoodThe Core Balance Diet is a must-read for women who have, well...gotten off balance (which would include probably 85-95% of American women). And Marcelle (with Genevieve) include six common ways that we have lost our balance: digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammatory, and detoxification. Which of us has not experienced imbalance in one of those areas, let alone two or three?

Marcelle challenges the woman who thinks she would be too overwhelmed to make some dietary and lifestyle changes: "If you could help your partner to lose weight, or help protect your child's health, by changing what he or she ate for a month, wouldn't you try and do it? Now, aren't you worth that same amount of attention?" And she is only asking you to try her program for a month! After that, she assures you, you'll be free from your food addictions and hooked on your feeling great!

Balance, as you might suppose, also entails eating approximately a 30/30/40 ratio of healthy fats, protein and complex carbs (though not as strict as the Zone Diet). But it includes much, much more than that.

The book begins with an explanation of how imbalances lead to weight gain and aging and provides a layman's easy-to-read explanation of the systems.

Marcelle provides a Core Balance quiz for you to determine which of your systems are weakest. This is followed by a chapter on each system. Each chapter(which is delight to read even if they don't apply to you as much as the others) contains the following: information on the imbalance and how to correct it; sidebars and boxes with interesting tidbits of info; a list of "Marcelle's prescriptions " for that imbalance; diagnostic tests to note the progress of that imbalance; foods to include and foods to avoid; supplements to take; "a day in the life" schedule for the lifestyle changes needed (exercise, when to eat, self- nurturing, etc.); a one-week menu;and frequently asked questions.

There are also 60 pages of recipes. Except for the medical diagnostic tests, this is a complete do-it-yourself book.

True to the Hay House spirit, there is also a chapter on the mind-body connection with the cute title, "Your Issues Are in Your Tissues" which alerts you to negative thinking and self-destructive behavior patterns that can sabotage your health.

I have read hundreds of books on health and nutrition (even wrote one myself!) and I give this book a hearty two thumbs up! I learned lots of interesting tidbits, such as how the liver is taxed on a low-fat diet, how Vitamin D deficiency is linked to obesity, and how not flossing can lead to body-wide inflammation. The only thing Marcelle could do to make it more complete would be to have a chapter on the importance of eating more raw foods since a raw diet taxes the digestive system far less.

This is a diet that can be, with a bit of imagination, used by anyone who has any dietary slant (vegan, vegetarian, raw fooder, etc). For example, if one is raw vegan, substitute raw hemp protein powder in place of meat and don't cook the vegetables.

From the co-founder of Women to Women, one of the first clinics in the country devoted to providing health care for women by women, comes a whole new way to look at weight loss: The Core Balance Diet. Marcelle Pick draws upon decades of patient and personal experience to solve the mystery of stubborn, frustrating weight gain in women, whether you've just gained it or have been struggling with it for years. This breakthrough program, which has benefited many of the thousands of women who visit the clinic each year, is rooted in cutting-edge nutritional science that explores the weblike relationship between women's hormones, metabolism, and weight gain. These include digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammatory, and detoxification imbalances. From there, Pick guides you through easy lifestyle and diet changes customized to heal your specific imbalance. Throughout, you will learn how to begin living in a manner that encourages optimal health-without a lot of deprivation and stringent dieting rules- by achieving core balance from the inside out, and, of course, weight loss for life.
