Illegally Thin (Paperback) Review

Illegally ThinI should start by saying that this book makes a valiant effort at bringing an important substance to the public attention. There is a great deal of negative misinformation surrounding this drug, and it's a good thing that it finally has a champion willing to stand up for it in the realm of published materials. However, the book itself is unfortunately deeply flawed, launching into ridiculous (and badly supported) conspiracy theories, while being rife with grammatical and spelling errors (even the name of the drug itself, in the big reveal sentence 17 pages in, is spelled incorrectly; the author has also pronounced the name of the drug incorrectly in a radio interview).

The information presented on the safety and efficacy of the drug is well supported by clinical research. This is where the book succeeds to its fullest extent. However, I felt that the author overstates the safety of the drug somewhat, which can be seen as a backlash against all the negative hype surrounding the drug. It is so often called a deadly poison that it is understandable that someone who understands the evidence concerning its safety would be driven to cry out the opposite opinion, but the book takes this a little too far in saying that it is "harmless" and might cure or prevent a number of diseases. There is no explanation or evidence given for the claims that the fat loss the drug causes would lead to the prevention of diseases associated with obesity (although the research from the '30s described a measured reduction in blood pressure after use for those with high blood pressure to begin with). The book does explain the dangers of the drug clearly, though, and explains correctly that it is only dangerous when overdosed.

The best part of the book is the Stanford University report on use of the drug for fat loss, which is presented in its entirety. If you buy this book for any reason, buy it to have this report.

Other than being badly in need of an editor, where the book really takes a dive in terms of quality is in its absurd claims of conspiracy theories. The book argues that the FDA is wrongfully keeping this drug from the American people, while knowing full well that it is safe and effective, because its release would hurt the profits of the special interest groups (pharmaceutical companies) that fund the FDA. The author mostly only supports these claims with sweeping generalizations about how the FDA functions, and uses as references other opinion pieces that are speaking out against the FDA. There is no actual evidence provided. I do not disagree that the current system is not a desirable situation, and that it is wrong for the FDA to take money from pharmaceutical companies, but the idea that any of this is keeping the drug in question off the market is just ludicrous. If the FDA ban were lifted, it would be the pharmaceutical companies themselves who would be manufacturing and selling the drug, and they would make billions off of it for decades to come. They would absolutely love to have a safe and highly effective prescription fat loss drug, because such a drug would be the most popular drug in history. The more likely explanation is simply that because it was banned, nobody at the FDA is even looking at it or thinking about it as a viable option.

BOTTOM LINE: Valuable information, and a bold and valiant effort, but the grammatical and spelling errors, and ridiculous conspiracy theories, make this book more silly than useful. You don't need to buy this book. If you want to learn the name of the drug, or find out where to acquire some, simply search the website for the book, and log in to the forums on said website. If you want to learn more about the drug and its safe use, search the web for forums that discuss the topic, but be wary of any use protocols and supplement advice, as most of it is bad information, and be very careful who you believe. Don't waste your money on this book, unless you really want to have the Stanford report and can't find it anywhere else.
