The Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet [Paperback] Review

The Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet [Paperback]One of the first of the high protein, no carb diet books, Dr. Stillman's book is at least honest, unlike most others today. He doesn't demonize carbs, extol the virtues of red meat, or urge you to eat all the saturated fat you can. He explains that he has found that many dieters get frustrated when weight loss is slow and give up. His diet lets you see results quickly, and that, he hopes will be the impetus to keep you on the diet. He explains why eating protein fills you up, leads to ketosis, and quick weight loss. He instructs you to drink eight full glasses of water per day to wash away the ketones, and admits that some of the weight loss will be the result of your peeing your brains out. He also says you might be constipated (take a laxative), you will not get the necessary vitamins and minerals (take a multi-vitamin every day), and may have bad breath (chew Trident gum). He himself had gone on this diet and it seemed to work. He was a skinny little guy who appeared regularly on the old Johnny Carson Show.

Dr. Stillman later amended his diet because many people had complained about the monotony of it and asked if they could have a salad. He modifiedhis diet to include salads with non-fat dressing. He warned that weight loss may not be quite as quick with the added carbs, but if it helped you stay on the diet, it made sense to do so.

In the end, high protein diets do work because they are monotonous, so while we are told we can eat as much as we like, we probably take in less calories than we did before we went on the diet. There are many nasty side effects however, that you won't experience on a balanced diet that simply takes in fewer calories.

Unlike Atkins and the others, he tells you to avoid fat by buying lean meats, removing the skin from chicken, recommends the frequent consumption of fish and cottage cheese. Unless you really want to believe that saturated fat and cholesterol are good for you, this makes good sense. Modern thinking is that dietary cholesterol may not be as bad as we once thought, but I like to err on the side of caution, and think a couple of hard boiled eggs a week is reasonable.

In my opinion, this diet is best for people who have just a few pounds to lose. They can take it off quickly, then gradually go back to a balanced diet. If you have a lot of weight to lose, I wouldn't recommend it because of the strain it might put on the body in the long term. Try a more balanced diet. You will lose weight more slowly, but you have a better chance of keeping part or even all of it off longer.
