Fat Chance: Losing the Weight, Gaining My Worth (Hardcover) Review

Fat Chance: Losing the Weight, Gaining My WorthI loved this book! Fat Chance is so inspiring that it made even me forego eating that piece of chocolate cake and opt instead for lacing up my sneaks to go for a walk.

Julie Hadden, a cast member on Season 4 of The Biggest Loser television show, has written a memoir that transcends the all too usual "I had an exciting experience" memoir. Through the use of humor and a writer's voice that just wants to invite you over for a cup of coffee, Hadden manages to tell her fat to thin story while at the same time impressing on us the important lessons she learned along the way.

Included in this well told story are humorous incidents, poignant realizations, and true insight into why she was so overweight to begin with. As an example one of her discussions is about how she has learned to pause before eating something she knows she shouldn't and ask herself "what is it that you are really hungry for?" She realizes now that as a child, she was using food to fill the need of approval and acceptance.

You don't have to be a Biggest Loser fan to enjoy this book because even those who know nothing of the show will still benefit from its inspiring and straight forward message. But if you are a fan, you'll love the little bits of inside information she includes as asides in each chapter. For example, the large scale used at the weigh-ins is fake (gasp) and the contestants are weighed at a Dr.'s office earlier in the day. If it's any consolation, they don't know what their actual weights are until the taping segment at the scale.

Written in short, digestible chunks (pun intended) Fat Chance is a quickly paced read that will keep you turning the pages, not because you are wondering if she got thin (the answer is on the cover of the book, yes she did) but instead it keeps you wondering how is she going to cope and continue living a thin life where a fat woman once lived. The question "What is it that needs to change?" will keep you up reading this book late at night.

Without being heavy handed, Hadden gives her faith due credit for her surviving the show and for her continuing on, even in the face of birthday cake and tea parties. Her honest relationship with God comes across as sincere and not in the least bit preachy.

As an added bonus to this book, the appendixes include workout routines, glossary of terms, recipes of favorite foods, and a section on frequently asked questions.

Hadden claims that her single most important lesson she learned from being on the Biggest Loser is that she is worthy of living the life she was created for. Her enthusiasm and inspiring words leave you cheering her success while at the same time asking yourself if you are also living up to your own full potential as well.

Julie Hadden is a thirty-seven-year-old stay-at-home mom. She and her husband Mike, live in Jacksonville, Florida with their two sons.

Product Description:
Julie Hadden, one of the most successful and memorable contestants ever on NBC's The Biggest Loser, struggled with her self-worth and her size for years. At age thirty-four she found herself at a crossroads: would she settle for staying 'big' the rest of her life, or would she insist on making big changes instead? Reality-TV fans know which path Julie chose that day. When she stepped on the scale at the show's season-four finale, revealing she had lost an astounding 45 percent of her body weight, she simultaneously stepped into the world's collective heart.
Julie's experience on The Biggest Loser helped birth her new physique, but the transformation went far deeper than that. From displeasure to contentment, from indulgence to self-control, from shame to self-confidence every step along renovation's path, Julie sensed that God was hard at work.
Relying on her classic humor and penetrating candor, Julie offers readers of all shapes and sizes an intimate portrayal of a once-fat woman who sweated and slogged her way toward thin. Additionally she answers frequently asked questions about her weight loss and being a contestant on The Biggest Loser and provides a sampling of her favorite healthy recipes and sample workouts from her current trainer.
In a book that marries introspection with inspiration and teachable moments with rare, behind-the-scenes details about one of the hottest shows on TV, Fat Chance not only will endear readers to the author's firsthand experience, but will inspire them to make healthy changes of their own.

Ultra-Fat to Ultra-Fit: A Scientist's Rational Approach to Extreme Weight Loss and Optimal Fitness (Paperback) Review

Ultra-Fat to Ultra-Fit: A Scientist's Rational Approach to Extreme Weight Loss and Optimal FitnessUltra Fat to Ultra Fit is a humorous, yet meaningful, story of one guy's battle with obesity.Noah Walton PhD,scientist, reveals what factors led himself to doing nothing about being overweight and how he dealt with his own weight challenges as a college student.I laughed out loud about "going on the Chicken." (You have to read it to understand this) His weight loss approach is unique as he is! The author provides data to help understand why many diets don't work.Even though he was not a natural athlete, he worked his way up from not being able to run/walk a mile to finishing an Ironman race using his own atypical formula.

A "must read" and especially motivational to anyone who wishes to change their life and become healthy. This will appeal to audiences of all ages. Not your typical weight loss book, more of a scientific focused memoir of a fat kid who became a thin scientist and runner. It is sprinkled with antidotes and real life experiences.I would highly recommend this book.

enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer [Hardcover] Review

enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer [Hardcover]I discovered the joys of yoga and pilates a year ago.I love it, although I am not as flexible as I would like to be (Jessica actually talks about this in her book). So, of course, this book hit me and I had to read it.

It is extremely well written, with honesty and I love that Jessica was completely opened about her weight issues, as well as some of her relationship issues with her parents. This book feels like a girlfriend and I talking -

I love the subject matter and Jessica touches on Ayuverda which is something that I have developed an interest in as well. Its almost as if Jessica was reading my mind.

I even love the quick and healthy recipes that are in the book.I have to say though, that, at times, Jessica makes the whole overeating thing a little too simplistic. As someone with an eating disorder (binge eating( its not always quite enough to talk to yourself or go for a long walk - but Jessica is right about trying to get to the root of the problems.

One of the things that I felt a little off about was the fact that Jessica always seems to have the time AND money to do all the things she wants to do. ALthough she and her hubby sounded as though they were not necessarily stable in the finance dept, especially since he was looking for another job - she goes ahead and becomes a yoga teacher and from the rest of the book, I did not get the feeling as though Jessica really ever had a full time job other than that of teaching yoga.Yet, she seems to be able to benefit from everything from Kripalu retreats to invitro, etc. I felt a disconnect there - what about the rest of us who have to hold down full time jobs, juggle kids and are just making ends meet???

I know that Jessica claims that you don't need a lot of $$$ to be healthy, etc. - she does not really lead by example on that particular subject.Yet, this is her story, so I guess she is just telling us what she lives.

I know, from experience, that if you want to get totally healthy and eat all these nutritious meals and enjoy walking, yoga and other various activities as suggested, you had better have a gift for making time for yourself AND a nice little amount of money to do it with.

Still, this book is hearwarming and encouraging and i loved it.

3 Fat Chicks on a Diet: Because We're All in It Together [Bargain Price] (Hardcover) Review

3 Fat Chicks on a Diet: Because We're All in It Together [Bargain Price]I adored this book...full of good information and serious facts, but told in a conversational and humerous way that made all of it much more palatable than if I'd went to each diet's website or tried to read all their literature.Like the "Girlfriend's Guide to..." books, the writing in "3 Fat Chicks..." makes you feel like you are sitting down with your best girlfriends to get the 'real scoop' on what the popular diets out there are like, what they do well, what doesn't work, and most importantly, how to make them successful.

They provide guidance on how to select the right diet for you, believing that finding a plan you can stick to is key to future weightloss success. They emphasize healthy actions and healthy eating, which I appreciated after reading other books where the plans sound incredibly unhealthy and likely to cause lifelong damage. They know that the real secret to weightloss is cutting calories and exercising more, but also acknowledge that the way you approach that can affect your success as well.

I really appreciated the numerous quotes from members of the 3 Fat Chicks website who weighed in on their experiences with the diet and what worked and didn't work for them. They gave tips for dealing with the plans and making them more successful, which was really helpful.I'm a frequent user of sites that include recommendations from other users and have grown slightly dependent on hearing from others who have gone before on what they would do differently. The authors catered to that need by including advice, comments, and tips from many, many users of their website, many of which were amusing as well!

In addition, I found several of the recipes very interesting! It was an addition to the book that I didn't really expect. Not only did they help me get a better picture of how each plan translates into real eating, but they gave me lots of good ideas for things I might want to actually cook.

All in all, this is an extremely helpful book in selecting a diet plan that works for you, but it also has wonderful information for those already on a specific diet on how to make it work better!I've already given my copy to a friend of mine...I'm on the South Beach Diet and she's on Weight Watchers, but we both found a lot to like with "3 Fat Chicks..."!

Confessions of a Carb Queen: A Memoir [Bargain Price] (Paperback) Review

Confessions of a Carb Queen: A Memoir [Bargain Price]I tore into this book on Christmas Eve, read it cover-to-cover, and was donein time for the traditional Christmas dinner of Chinese take-out!This is the most comforting, inspirational book I've read in a while. If you struggle with your weight and have a book shelf like mine, I doubt you'll find anything glaringly new as far as diet and exercise, but you'll cheer with and for Susan Blech as she courageously changes her world in order to save her life.If you ever lay in bed and reach a near-panic state wondering what would happen if you were caught in a fire, and you didn't have time to get dressed, and you needed clothes, and none of your neighbors were even close to your size....then this is the book for you! This book has renewed my hope that by continuing to search for what's really behind my food obsession, I can, one day, be successful.Just knowing you're not alone makes it a little bit easier to put your feet on the floor and trudge through for another day. Secrets of a Former Fat Girl: How to Lose Two, Four (or More!) Dress Sizes--And Find Yourself Along the Way [Paperback] Review

Secrets of a Former Fat Girl: How to Lose Two, Four Dress Sizes--And Find Yourself Along the Way [Paperback]The thing I liked best about this book was its fresh sense of reality and its ability to address PERMANENT weight control in a clear, simple, practical way.Having been on hundreds of diets over the past forty years, I know that Dieting, as we know it, ALWAYS leads to temporary success followed by regaining what was lost and then some--no exceptions!

The few times I have managed to keep weight off for any length of time I instinctively used part of Delaney's seven-point system but somehow missed a few of her other--and obviously very important--points having to do with self-image and self-sabotage, the supreme importance of INO, and how to handle all types of Food Pushers who, like the experts, just don't understand. And the insights she gives are from years of really dealing with the problems, unlike the Experts who research like crazy but rarely have lived with our realities.

Delaney lost major weight (50+ lbs.) and has kept it off for more than 20 years unlike most of the Experts who have lost perhaps a few pounds and think, because of the alphabet soup after their names, they know it all and want to sell it to us in another dieting-Bestseller-of-the-Month with a gymicky title.

As a former Library Director, I have a few fancy degrees too, but when it comes to my blubber, my newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes and my high blood pressure, I can tell you they don't mean squat. The way I see it, only someone who was a chronic dieter who has succeeded knows the true secrets.People who follow the Diet Doctors' advice fail over and over and over again as the current obesity epidemic is proving.

I believe in Delaney. Her approach reflects simple common sense, a practical grasp of reality and a sense of humor : ingredients--pardon the pun--for successful PERMANENT weight loss. This book should be required reading for anyone thinking of going on yet another diet and for any of our young people who need to get on the right track, in terms of healthy weight control, and stay there!

The Incredible Shrinking Critic: 75 Pounds and Counting: My Excellent Adventure in Weight Loss [Bargain Price] [Hardcover] Review

The Incredible Shrinking Critic: 75 Pounds and Counting: My Excellent Adventure in Weight Loss [Hardcover]This book is the first book in months that I've picked up and not been able to put down till I finished it.I am so glad that I came across it before spending another nickel on some weight loss scheme or how-to book.I was once so tiny I could fit into a size 2, but after years of self indulgence woke up one day and looked into my full length mirror to find a size 22 staring back at me.Ms Bernard writes of a similar experience, and how it placed her in a position of self knowledge - no longer could she imagine herself as the svelte, seductive siren of her 20's.She had been on a roller coaster ride of eating plans, self indulgent food choices, in a mire of marketing methods encouraging her to eat, eat, eat.She discusses the influences of men, friends, and family dynamics on her perception of herself as a young girl and adult. She shares herself unstintingly, and in the end, it is her matured vision of herself that wins out.

Self knowledge being what it is, you are left with a couple of choices.Either you intentionally delude yourself and continue on a self destructive, unhealthy life path, or you wake up and start taking care of yourself one step at a time.Jami Bernard writes of her awakening with great compassion, humor, and skill.I consumed her book instead of food, licking my lips with satisfaction and feeling like I'd just been to the best seminar ever on growing up and facing yourself in the present.I found priceless truth in the pages, perhaps a kindred spirit.Ms Bernard reveals to me what I already suspected - that I can choose to live a healthy lifestyle involving exercise, nutritious foods, and supportive friends, or I can continue on my self destructive and excuse-ridden, painful descent into a life of infirmities.I already have been through more than enough trendy diet plans, yo-yo dieting, and the consequences - sleep apnea, plantar fasciitis, painful joints, etc.

I would love to share this book with everyone living in the purgatory of the overweight.I would love to see anyone searching for a way out of excessive eating stop being a victim and become empowered.Reading this delightful book was a key to my empowerment, now it rests with me to follow through.

Product Description:
Jami Bernard was fat and now she's not. In this riotously funny, intensely personal book she tells us how she did it. After trying countless diets and workout routines, she stopped dieting: She began enjoying food and life in a rational, healthy way and finally lost the weight. No foods were demonized, no fads embraced. As Jami discovered, lasting weight loss is about strategy not willpower.

She charted her initial weight loss in the New York Daily News, where her editor came up with the column's title, "Our Incredible Shrinking Critic." It was a daring or foolhardy move- perhaps to make up for the denial that she'd basked in for so long. In effect, she put her body on display for a million or more readers. If she failed, it would be a very public and personal fall: Her stated goal was to lose 100 pounds.

Jami tells readers how the shock of seeing the number 230 on the scale gave her the jolt she needed. Her goal, to lose one pound a week, seemed modest, but readers were so inspired by her column that many decided to lose weight along with her. They offered her help, sending her encouraging e-mails, and she passed along advice and information from experts in the field.

This book is about big-time weight loss and about losing it for good. Even if you're just struggling to lose a few extra pounds, Jami's advice may help keep a slow creep of pudge from becoming a mudslide. For those who are considering serious weight loss, Jami suggests reasonable goals and ideas for long-term strategies. This book is about changing habits, eating responsibly, and becoming more active. Jami inspires readers throughout the book with tips, stories, and recipes.

As Jami writes, "Every extra pound tells a story. It's a story of anger, frustration, old wounds, and carelessness. It's a story of misjudged portions, too-hasty celebrations, bad planning, misplaced optimism. It's a story of denial." Bitingly funny, moving, and sometimes shocking, Jami Bernard dared to waddle into the spotlight and make lasting changes.--This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl [Paperback] Review

The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl [Paperback]This is a read-cover-to-cover-in-one-sitting book. While it is nominally about weight-loss, it's really a story about getting your priorities right and how to live life well. Indeed this presents as one of the keys to weight loss. It is therefore invaluable in that it implicitly exposes the futile, depressing and exploitative nature of fad diets while simultaneously showing you something far more positive. This book lingers with you long after reading, nudging you into asking yourself some powerful questions about the decisions you make everyday. The amazing thing is this is all done very subtly, and therefore generously. Unusual within weight-loss genres, Shauna is far from didactic, nor does she condescend to offer advice. In fact she is very humble, and you get the impression that she's got a lot going on. While the narrative travels smoothly and lightly, it should not fool readers into thinking that Shauna's journey was quick or easy. In reality readers will relate to some deep core issues about self-worth, body image, family, love, the self and other, change, self-knowledge and self-development. This is a moving story which causes you to reflect on your own values and has the potential to help you develop an enriched understanding of your place in the world. It affords a sense of clarity and determination that is addictive. Thankfully Shauna's blog of the same name means the narrative progresses online, where you can continue to follow the story of this remarkable woman.

The Weight-Loss Diaries [Paperback] Review

The Weight-Loss Diaries [Paperback]I couldn't put this book down. The people who left bad reviews apparently have no clue what it is to battle an eating disorder.
The words like "stop blaming your parents and just take responsibility and stop eating" make me realize that:
a) Lots of people have no clue that our behaviors come from our parents.
b) It's easy to say "stop eating".... It's like telling a drug addict to stop doing drugs.
c) Yes, for us ( people with eating disorders, who were taught to always be good and given high, very high standards to follow)food IS a drug of choice. We couldn't show up at home drunk nor stoned for the fear of our parents, but we definitely could show up full of food.
Well, take it as it is. I loved the book. This book made me take a look at myself from the side. Yes, this book made changes in my life and NO, it didn't make me think that i am free to eat or do what i want and don't have take responsibility for my actions.

From Shape magazine's popular "Weight-Loss Diary" columnist comes a hilarious, sometimes heartwrenching look at the daily struggle of dieting
In this frank and funny book, Courtney Rubin shares what she learned about dieting--and herself--in more than two years of chronicling her battle to keep food from consuming her life. As engaging as her famous column, The Weight-Loss Diaries is part memoir, part how-to, and always entertaining.
An honest and brave account of what it feels like, day in and day out, often year in and year out, to try to lose a significant amount of weight, The Weight-Loss Diaries is:

An unashamed tale of binges, fashion fiascos, setbacks, and ultimate success
A light-hearted, laugh-out-loud look at the most ridiculous excuses for ending or cheating on a diet
A no-holds-barred account of the author's dark days of flirting with eating disorders and constantly calculating and recalculating calories
With insight, humor, and courage, Rubin explores diet and food issues, as well as her self-sabotaging habits during dieting, in ways that everyone struggling with weight loss will find both instructive and inspiring.
Courtney Rubin has written for the New York Times, Marie Claire, Time, and other publications. For two years, she wrote the "Weight-Loss Diary" column for Shape magazine. Formerly a senior writer at Washingtonian magazine, Rubin is now a correspondent based in London for People.

Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir [Paperback] Review

Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir [Paperback]I'm a sucker for a good before and after tale. Lucky for me, this memoir is so much more. Fulda chronicles her amazing 186+ weight loss, more than half of her starting weight. But she does more than just show us her weight loss; she describes her relationship with her body and with her daily habits with such wit and humor that I laughed out loud dozens of times. The pace is quick, and the content is interesting (no daily diet plans or lists of gym workouts here).

I also like Fulda's attitude. She doesn't pretend to be a weight loss guru, and she never disrespects herself and her body. Everyone knows how to lose weight...it's her dedication that makes her tale amazing. Also, I enjoy her focus on becoming athletic rather than getting thin (especially refreshing in today's "Get Skinny!" social climate.) She is a very positive person, even when dealing with ugly plus-size clothes, negative blog comments, or the inevitable plateaus.

This is a great, inspirational read, and Fulda is a delightful writer. Reading it made my wait at the DMV actually enjoyable; I only wish the book could have lasted longer!

Product Description:
After undergoing gall bladder surgery at age twenty-three, Jennette Fulda decided it was time to lose some weight. Actually, more like half her weight. At the time, Jennette weighed 372 pounds.

Jennette was not born fat. But, by fifth grade, her response to a school questionnaire asking "what would you change about your appearance" was "I would be thinner." Sound familiar?

Half-Assed is the captivating and incredibly honest story of Jennette's journey to get in shape, lose weight, and change her life. From the beginning-dusting off her never-used treadmill and steering clear of the donut shop-to the end with her goal weight in sight, Jennette wows readers with her determined persistence to shed pounds and the ability to maintain her ever-present sense of self.
