3 Fat Chicks on a Diet: Because We're All in It Together [Bargain Price] (Hardcover) Review

3 Fat Chicks on a Diet: Because We're All in It Together [Bargain Price]I adored this book...full of good information and serious facts, but told in a conversational and humerous way that made all of it much more palatable than if I'd went to each diet's website or tried to read all their literature.Like the "Girlfriend's Guide to..." books, the writing in "3 Fat Chicks..." makes you feel like you are sitting down with your best girlfriends to get the 'real scoop' on what the popular diets out there are like, what they do well, what doesn't work, and most importantly, how to make them successful.

They provide guidance on how to select the right diet for you, believing that finding a plan you can stick to is key to future weightloss success. They emphasize healthy actions and healthy eating, which I appreciated after reading other books where the plans sound incredibly unhealthy and likely to cause lifelong damage. They know that the real secret to weightloss is cutting calories and exercising more, but also acknowledge that the way you approach that can affect your success as well.

I really appreciated the numerous quotes from members of the 3 Fat Chicks website who weighed in on their experiences with the diet and what worked and didn't work for them. They gave tips for dealing with the plans and making them more successful, which was really helpful.I'm a frequent user of sites that include recommendations from other users and have grown slightly dependent on hearing from others who have gone before on what they would do differently. The authors catered to that need by including advice, comments, and tips from many, many users of their website, many of which were amusing as well!

In addition, I found several of the recipes very interesting! It was an addition to the book that I didn't really expect. Not only did they help me get a better picture of how each plan translates into real eating, but they gave me lots of good ideas for things I might want to actually cook.

All in all, this is an extremely helpful book in selecting a diet plan that works for you, but it also has wonderful information for those already on a specific diet on how to make it work better!I've already given my copy to a friend of mine...I'm on the South Beach Diet and she's on Weight Watchers, but we both found a lot to like with "3 Fat Chicks..."!

The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl [Paperback] Review

The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl [Paperback]This is a read-cover-to-cover-in-one-sitting book. While it is nominally about weight-loss, it's really a story about getting your priorities right and how to live life well. Indeed this presents as one of the keys to weight loss. It is therefore invaluable in that it implicitly exposes the futile, depressing and exploitative nature of fad diets while simultaneously showing you something far more positive. This book lingers with you long after reading, nudging you into asking yourself some powerful questions about the decisions you make everyday. The amazing thing is this is all done very subtly, and therefore generously. Unusual within weight-loss genres, Shauna is far from didactic, nor does she condescend to offer advice. In fact she is very humble, and you get the impression that she's got a lot going on. While the narrative travels smoothly and lightly, it should not fool readers into thinking that Shauna's journey was quick or easy. In reality readers will relate to some deep core issues about self-worth, body image, family, love, the self and other, change, self-knowledge and self-development. This is a moving story which causes you to reflect on your own values and has the potential to help you develop an enriched understanding of your place in the world. It affords a sense of clarity and determination that is addictive. Thankfully Shauna's blog of the same name means the narrative progresses online, where you can continue to follow the story of this remarkable woman.

Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir [Paperback] Review

Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir [Paperback]I'm a sucker for a good before and after tale. Lucky for me, this memoir is so much more. Fulda chronicles her amazing 186+ weight loss, more than half of her starting weight. But she does more than just show us her weight loss; she describes her relationship with her body and with her daily habits with such wit and humor that I laughed out loud dozens of times. The pace is quick, and the content is interesting (no daily diet plans or lists of gym workouts here).

I also like Fulda's attitude. She doesn't pretend to be a weight loss guru, and she never disrespects herself and her body. Everyone knows how to lose weight...it's her dedication that makes her tale amazing. Also, I enjoy her focus on becoming athletic rather than getting thin (especially refreshing in today's "Get Skinny!" social climate.) She is a very positive person, even when dealing with ugly plus-size clothes, negative blog comments, or the inevitable plateaus.

This is a great, inspirational read, and Fulda is a delightful writer. Reading it made my wait at the DMV actually enjoyable; I only wish the book could have lasted longer!

Product Description:
After undergoing gall bladder surgery at age twenty-three, Jennette Fulda decided it was time to lose some weight. Actually, more like half her weight. At the time, Jennette weighed 372 pounds.

Jennette was not born fat. But, by fifth grade, her response to a school questionnaire asking "what would you change about your appearance" was "I would be thinner." Sound familiar?

Half-Assed is the captivating and incredibly honest story of Jennette's journey to get in shape, lose weight, and change her life. From the beginning-dusting off her never-used treadmill and steering clear of the donut shop-to the end with her goal weight in sight, Jennette wows readers with her determined persistence to shed pounds and the ability to maintain her ever-present sense of self.
