The Body Fat Solution: Five Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight [Hardcover] Review

The Body Fat Solution: Five Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating, and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight [Hardcover]I am a physician who manages a suburban metabolic and nutrition program for obese and overweight children. It amazes me how complex it is to unravel the passionate and unhealthy philosophy many people have about exercise and nutrition. So many people are struggling fruitlessly with their goals as they are overwhelmed by seemingly endless waves of misleading advertisements and contradictory information about lifestyle and nutrition. There is so much unbelievable noise out there that many people are left feeling hopeless, defeated and not knowing what to do.The Body Fat Solution is a very healthy, very welcome voice of reason among all that noise.

As I develop nutrition plans for my patients I will frequently reference the precepts outlined in Tom Venuto's brilliant e-book Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. Honestly, I found this e-book to be a very approachable and comprehensive volume dealing with nutrition, exercise and hormonal physiology.(I would highly recommend this e-book for anyone who wants a more detailed explanation of macronutrients, hormonal physiology, and meal planning.)However, The Body Fat Solution is an indispensable development to this excellent work.

In my experience patients do not struggle as much with "what to do" but rather struggle with "the doing of it".In the first few consultations with a new patient I can usually disarm the passionate obsession with whatever flavor of macronutrient phobia they have and outline the physiological rational behind consistently eating a calorie based diet of lean protein, whole unprocessed foods, and essential fats.In this motivational clinical setting most patients will readily agree to begin journaling and commit to starting an exercise and nutrition program.

However, the problems arise as soon as they leave my office and are once again buffeted by their busy schedule, advertising, misleading labels, psychological defense mechanisms and emotional ties to eating. Most of the time I spend on subsequent patient visits centers on developing strategies of how to interface the program we have developed into their lifestyle. The strategies revealed in The Body Fat Solution do an excellent job addressing these issues.

The Body Fat Solution outlines all of the necessary tactics to tackle these intangible influences on our nutrition and exercise plans. The first four chapters outline the evolution of obesity and how our beliefs, attitudes and emotional ties to food play a significant role in this unhealthy homeostasis. In chapter five you are taken step-by-step through the essential process of goal setting and reprogramming your mental awareness of the beliefs and attitudes that can sabotage your plans. Then in chapters six through eight you are treated to the most insightful and logical nutrition and exercise program I have ever seen.Everything you need to know ... it's all there ... very motivational and very doable! Finally chapters nine through twelve outline all the necessary environmental and social strategies needed to start you on the way to maintaining your new and healthy self.

Quoting The Body Fat Solution, "There is no way around it - to tackle a problem like body fat, which has so many causes, you must make changes in every area of your life. You have to eat better, train consistently, manage your emotions, change your thinking, get the support you need, and put it all together in a healthy lifestyle."I couldn't agree more.In my opinion The Body Fat Solutions gives you all the necessary tools to do just that.

Weight Loss Salvation: How Real People Lose Weight and Keep It Off, and How You Will Too [Hardcover] Review

Weight Loss Salvation: How Real People Lose Weight and Keep It Off, and How You Will Too [Hardcover]I have been a follower of Stuart McRobert and his books on weight training and fitness for years now. His "underground" appeal and almost cult-like following of fitness enthusiasts gives him the traction necessary to blow the lid off what is the "great sham" of the modern fitness industry. I got an advanced copy of Weight-Loss Salvation and I was at first curious about his teaming up with Bradley Cailor, a virtual unknown in the health and weight-loss industry as Stuart usually prefers to fly solo. But the result is a successful collaboration between the obscure Cailor and the iconic McRobert, as the book is simply incredible. McRobert and Cailor give a virtuoso performance by presenting down to earth facts and narrating the real life drama of how people can "really" lose weight. It also reveals the tragic scams that companies use to play on people's vulnerabilities to get them to spend money on worthless programs, supplements, and what Cailor calls "Snake Oils." Not only will the reader find out how to really lose weight, the reader will also learn why the weight-loss industry is a multi-billion dollar business. You won't find photos of models, Hollywood stars, nor other near-perfect people who never had a weight problem professing his principles or lauding the benefits of the program. This is a real-life, real-world manual on weight loss. His principles are grounded in science and spoken by someone who has been there. Cailor has been obese, and has shed the weight, but not after first trying and failing with the myriad of scams and ill-informed programs out there. Find out how he finally did it by reading the book. I myself do not have a weight problem, but as a health enthusiast and fellow published writer, I couldn't resist the pull of this book and I learned many new things myself.

Together, Cailor and McRobert have written an extraordinary book on weight-loss.

The Female Body Breakthrough: The Revolutionary Strength-Training Plan for Losing Fat and Getting the Body You Want (Paperback) Review

The Female Body Breakthrough: The Revolutionary Strength-Training Plan for Losing Fat and Getting the Body You WantI have read and admired Rachel Cosgrove since reading New Rules of Lifting for Women and bought a subscription to Women's Health when I saw her name begin to appear regularly. Her new book is very solid: well-researched nutritional advice, common sense and rational approach to health and fitness, and full of useful photographs and descriptions. The reason I subtracted a star I think may be attributed to her editors rather than the author herself. I enjoy reading Ms. Cosgrove because she's smart, reasonable and walks the walk. I do not read her because she's a woman. I "trust" the advice of people who know what they are talking about because they're educated, well-researched and respectful of their audience. Their chromosomal make-up doesn't usually factor in for me. I don't know if this makes me an anomaly, but someone on Ms. Cosgrove's team felt it important that the reader understand that she gets women because we share body parts.

By the end of the second chapter, I was twitching every time I read the word "girl", "feminine" or a double-dose of exclamation points used to stress the fact that she's fun! friendly! and you don't have to sacrifice femininity to be strong! I found myself skimming sections and actually felt like I was betraying Ms. Cosgrove's hard work in creating what is, in fact, a solid health and workout plan. I lost 75 pounds following the guidance she and her husband set out in New Rules and was looking for her advice on getting to the next stage. I appreciated the fact that some issues that are unique to women (i.e. hormones) were in their own chapters and given the time they deserve. However, I wish they had dialed back the "sisterhood" factor to a 6-7 instead of a 10. Well, at least the cover isn't pink. . .

Your Body Revival: Weight Loss Straight Talk [Paperback] Review

Your Body Revival: Weight Loss Straight Talk [Paperback]For those of us sadly discovering middle age seems to also mean extra inches and unwanted pounds, this new book, "Your Body Revival" by famed bodybuilder and fitness expert Dave Draper is a godsend. Anyone familiar with either Draper himself, a consummate sixties bodybuilder who quickly ran through the pantheon of available titles by winning Mr. America, Mr. Universe and Mr. World to become famed as the blond bombshell, or with his unusual gifts as a writer as displayed in previous books such as "Brother Iron, Sister Steel" ... , this new offering of "Your Body Revival" is no great surprise. Indeed, for the mature fitness enthusiast unable to find adequate relevant personal guidance in mass circulation magazines that are more exclusively geared to the needs of younger athletes, this latest book is a unique and valuable offering that presents a plethora of suggestions that help both a more mature fitness enthusiast as well as a younger neophyte to manage his or her way toward specific physical goals.
Draper is one of those rare souls who is more interested in making a contribution to the sport by helping the everyday guy with his or her training issues than he is than with training potential bodybuilding stars for the posing platform. Not that Draper does not coach bodybuilders, for he surely does, but to date his main focus in his books has been more directed with helping "everyman" to strive for personal excellence. And it is this strain of thought that runs so memorably and helpfully through the chapters of this tome, as well. Draper clearly points the reader in the right direction, motivating and stimulating him or her with the voice of experience, probing at old fallacies and false promises, and summarizing, in concise and clear language, what the sound, basic nutritional facts are for the more mature athlete.
In doing so, he also provides a simple recipe or regimen for the athlete, one that will provide a maximum of lean muscle mass and which will also capitalize on fat loss at the same time.In this short book, big Dave emphasizes the "vital importance of muscle and bodybuilding", and even provides sample workout routines designed to reach these goals. And the book contains nuggets of useful information for all readers, regardless of their own circumstances or fitness level. In fact, in reading the book, you will quickly become amazed by the breadth of knowledge Draper applies to the subjects under discussion. It is obvious to even a casual reader that the book is carefully researched and meticulously written. Then again, one would hardly expect any less from the original blond bombshell, and a guy who brushed shoulders with everyone from George Eiferman to Steve Reeves to Larry Scott to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Tony Curtis to the late Sharon Tate.
In his introduction, Draper describes the sixties bodybuilding experience as being a time of relative innocence, before it became a mainstream fitness activity, and before it became corrupted by big power and big money, and it is that kind of personal ethos of seeing physical culture as a meaningful way of life and as a natural set of activities for someone interested in living a natural and healthy lifestyle that comes through here and makes this book so worthwhile. Like "Brother Iron, Sister Steel" before it, and like the many more books that we readers hope will follow, this is a book to be read and savored as words of carefully gathered experience, as words of training wisdom from the most gracefully aging bodybuilder of the 20th century.Dave Draper has become a quiet legend for those of us who matured in the shadow of his many accomplishments, for he is a guy who always managed to walk with a singular dignity and purpose, someone who never sold out to the more crass and commercial forms of strength sports "entertainments" we so often see in today's publications. This book gives us the honest information we need to strive more successfully toward our own realistic physical fitness goals. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Outwit Your Weight Journal: Lose Weight and Keep It Off with this Personalized Weight-Loss Diary [Paperback] Review

Outwit Your Weight Journal: Lose Weight and Keep It Off with this Personalized Weight-Loss Diary [Paperback]The book "Outwit Your Weight" by Cathy Nonas, R.D. was so jam packed with easy to follow new tips and ideas for managing weight I picked up her companion book, the "Outwit Your Weight Journal".
Studies show that the best tool for weight loss success is journaling. In one study it was shown that people gain as much as 500% more weight during the holiday season than during non-holiday weeks. But a few folks actually lost weight during the holidays. Who were these lucky people? The folks who kept journals.Another study showed that folks who kept food journals for 15 weeks lost 64% more weight than those who didn't!
Journaling can be key to a successful weight loss journey. Knowing how important this tool is Cathy developed the "Outwit Your Weight Journal". This is very different from your traditional journals. In this book Cathy works with you to customize a journal style that will meet your needs and that you will actually "do" to meet your weight loss goals.
Some journals focus on calorie counting, others on exercise or fat grams. Cathy's book focuses on what YOU need.
The book begins with a simple self assessment of your diet danger zones. Do you nibble to much. Eat when you are lonely or bored. Eat when you read or eat due to medications?
And what is your weight loss personality? Are you a restrained eater with periods of extreme eating styles? Are you an ostrich -in denial about what you eat?
Once you have identified your eating personality, Cathy introduces 6 different types fo journals that may suit your needs. She gives charts to fill in for the different styles.
You can stick to one type of journal or switch as your needs change.
Cathy also gives a lot of other information in the book. She includes "smart strategies" to make the best use of journaling. A full section is devoted to developing goals. Guidelines are given for exercise.
The one drawback to this softcover book is that it doesn't lay flat so writing in it can be awkward. But I think the author intends for it to be used as a stepping stone. That you try out different journal styles (or find one instantly) and use that style in a blank book or copy the pages.
By personalizing a journal to suit your needs and finding the journal style you are comfortable with you are more likely to use journaling which has led so many to weight loss success!

Weights for Weight Loss: Fat-Burning and Muscle-Sculpting Exercises with Over 200 Step-by-Step Photos (Paperback) Review

Weights for Weight Loss: Fat-Burning and Muscle-Sculpting Exercises with Over 200 Step-by-Step PhotosI primarily bought this book for the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit workout listed on the back cover. The day I received it I read the entire book in one sitting. For such a tiny book, there was so much information covered that I hadn't read in other books (ex. metabolism, what is a calorie, mental focusing, etc.). I was very impressed by all this, but the workouts themselves WOW. I love the clear descriptions of the workouts and the explanations of what results to expect. I have only tried the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit and I incorporated into my current schedule rather than one of those listed in the book. I thought it was awesome and I definitely felt challenged. The exercises themselves have clear and concise descriptions and pictures on the movements. There are many basic exercises that are found in many other books, but there are also many I haven't seen before and love them already (ex. scooped flye for pectorals, lat pull side, single leg squat, most of the core series, etc.). This book doesn't skimp on the stretching moves as do many other books. For only 96 pages it is well packed with information, 4 workouts, 3 programs, and a nice catalog of exercises.

In regard to working out with books: I love this method because (1) I can keep up without having someone else set my pace and rhythm. (2a) Working out doesn't interfere with my TV watching in the evening. (2b) I can get in a workout at a decent time (I don't have a fancy recording device to help with this problem and don't really want to fork out money for one).(3) I am my best motivator. I really felt Ellen Barrett was motivating, especially because her first exercise is a mental one: you are responsible for you and your weight loss < This is a paraphrase.

Overall, I love this book and truly believe it's a great addition to my growing library of exercise and fitness books. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exercise and fitness.

Product Description:
Everyone knows that dieting without exercise doesn't work. But not all exercises are equally effective. Weights for Weight Loss explains why weight training is the best way to get in shape and provides readers with a comprehensive program that will guarantee success. The author dispels the five myths of weight training (fat turns to muscle, lifting makes for bulky muscles, weights are for men, it's easy to get hurt, heavier is better) and details the numerous benefits of building muscle, such as gaining more energy and a more youthful appearance, and - most importantly - greater fat loss with less effort. The book features exercises for all levels of fitness, from beginner to advanced.
Each exercise is clearly explained with step-by-step instructions and photos that show proper technique. Weights for Weight Loss's specialty programs include "The 10-Minute Body Blitz," which hits all the major muscle groups; "The 30-Minute Cardio Circuit," where exercises are performed at a fast pace with no rest in between; and "The 30-Minute Super Sculpt," where heavier weights are used for three sets in a row to exhaust muscles one at a time.

Weight Training Workouts that Work [Paperback] Review

Weight Training Workouts that Work [Paperback]I had been weight training for about two and a half years before purchasing this book. I've tried numerous routines over that time - some I've found online, some I pulled from magazines and books - and I usually get bored after a couple months, so I wanted to try Orvis' technique.
First off, be aware that this book is designed for the entry-level lifter. It assumes you either (a.) seldom/never lift free weights or (b.) have been out of lifting for a while. This book is perfect for that gym-goer who is afraid of leaving the Nautilus/cardio areas of the gym.
It starts you off relatively slow with total body workouts and by the second month has you working a more typical bodybuilding schedule grouped by muscle area. The schedule has you working out three days a week, and most workouts can be completed in about 30-45 minutes assuming you don't have to wait for any machines/benches.
Orvis doesn't cover cardio or nutrition. While that would be a nice addition, the book never makes the pretense of being a comprehensive fitness book - it solely delivers weight training workouts.
What I enjoyed most about Orvis' plan was the all-inclusive workout style. When so many programs tout one or two methods of lifting (pyramid, inverted pyramid, super sets, drop sets, etc.), he covers every one of these, rotating through different training styles every couple of weeks. The lifting variety will keep the program interesting and will also prevent your muscles from growing accustomed to a single routine and plateauing. Having worked out for some time, I was impressed when my muscles were sore after starting the super set training week.
The main problem I found was that Orvis' program sometimes overlooks certain muscle groups for an entire week. Often I found myself adding a bicep curl, French curl or calf lift to the week's schedule because the book overlooked it. I can see overlooking secondary muscles for a week, but not biceps or triceps. Doing bench presses or lat pulldowns won't give my arms a sufficient workout for an entire week.
Overall, I found the book to be great. It's very portable and I've recommended it to a few folks I've met at the gym who are stuck in "Nautilus Land." I would recommend sitting down at the beginning of the week, looking over the schedule, taking a mental inventory of which muscles you will be working on and compensating if any certain group is overlooked. His workouts tend to be a little more oriented toward lower body development, so you may find yourself adding some upper body sets on occasion.
Orvis' workouts are limited to just the major (common) lifts. If you're more than just a beginning weight lifter, I would strongly recommend purchasing "Strength Training Anatomy" or "The Encylopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" in addition to this book so you can get a better idea of what alternate lifts you can do to better work certain muscle groups or add more variety to your time at the gym. When paired together, I actually found this program to be great once I got past the first month. The super set/drop set/pyramid weeks are a blast.
I would love to see Orvis publish a book oriented toward bodybuilders who have more time to devote to lifting and require more comprehensive muscle training.
