Celebrity Body on a Budget (Paperback) Review

Celebrity Body on a BudgetCelebrity Body on a Budget (2010)
by Cornel Chin-Personal Trainer to the Stars

Reviewed by: Dr. Joseph S. Maresca

The work contains some very important perspectives with regard
to body building. For instance, the author distinguishes from among
the three main body types. i.e.

Ectomorphs havelong torsos, slim hips and shoulders.
The ectomorph loses weight easily and is inclined to
low levels of body fat. The goal is to increase stamina and muscle mass.

Endomorphs have bigger bones, larger thighs and hips.
The ideal training is to increase cardio training to reduce fat and
burn calories. Increasing the upper body exercises will aid in body
symmetry. Weight loss is most difficult and this is achieved with
increased cardio exercises aimed at burning calories.
Many people don't realize this aspect.
Activities which maximize calorie burning per hour are aerobic
dancing (500+), basketball (450) , football (500) ,
racquetball (588) and circuit training (756).

Mesomorphs have the ideal body shape which is robust and athletic.
Utilizing light to moderate weight training enhances muscle tone.
This body type gains muscle mass easily. They have broad
shoulders and a narrow waist. In addition, weight loss is no problem.

A series of very good exercises are presented for persons with a
sedentary lifestyle. Samples of these are the chest stretch,
arm/shoulder stretch, calves stretch, walking, leg squats and
many others.

The book provides good tips on what to look for when purchasing
treadmills, exercise bikes, the elliptical trainer, stepping machines
and small weights. Personally, I find small weights are best for
developing and maintaining muscle tone.

Lastly, the author presents some delicious meal tips for preparing
beef with cabbage, coriander beef stew, turkey burgers, garlic and
mushroom pasta and many others. Overall, the acquisition
would be perfect for the health enthusiast in your household.
The program described in this book would be extremely helpful
for lifetime weight maintenance and health.

The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast! [Hardcover] Review

The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle: The Simple Plan to Flatten Your Belly Fast [Hardcover]I truly wanted to like this book more than I did. I've been a fan of the Eadeses since I first read Protein Power back in 1997, and I currently follow their blogs regularly. I'm a proponent of low carb dieting for health reasons and have followed a low carb diet for a while now. But I also am no longer losing any weight on it (though still have a long way to go), so keep looking for things to get the scale moving again.

So I had a lot of expectations from this book. Admittedly I am only on my 5th day of following their plan (at least as best as I can, more about later...) and so far have not lost any weight, and am hungry constantly, yet perhaps suddenly something will kick in and I'll start to see something miraculous....

But the book itself was just a disappointment in so many ways. The actual information contained in the book is quite slight, and very lacking in detail. Perhaps this is a channeling of my inner geek, but what I loved about Protein Power was the detailed science of why it works. But there is little of that here. As an example, one of the things they tell you to use is something called DAG oil. The advantage of DAG oil, they say, is that it is 80% diglycerides rather than triglycerides as most oils have, and this gives it an ability to help reduce the fat in the body. But they give no details at all about this or why it works. And thus I'm very hesitant to use an oil that is extensively processed from the already heavily processed soy and canola oils, both of which have extremely unfavorable omega 6/omega 3 ratios (as does DAG oil) and neither of which I would ever touch.

But the Eadeses blithely say to replace a daily tablespoon of the oil you usually use with DAG oil... Hmm how about us folks who don't use oil at all because we feel that animals fats and butter are better choices?

However my biggest gripe with this book is that it does not give any real guidelines to follow for what to eat. The first two weeks is the 3-and-1 plan, three protein shakes a day plus a low carb meal. The recipe for the shakes is pretty conclusive and easy to follow. But what about the meal?

Instead of giving you guidelines they give you pages and pages and pages of menus, followed by all the recipes. At least half this book is a cookbook, and I didn't pay good money to pre-order this book from Amazon in order to get a cookbook. Cookbooks, menus and recipes I *don't* need. I just want a good simple guideline of what the meals should consist of - but the menus are so all over the place it's not that easy to figure out what to eat on your own.

They recommend that if you don't care for something in a menu to consult the substitution lists at the back of the book. Okay, I have some spinach at home, and I noted spinach used in some of their recipes, so I consulted the substitution lists to see how much spinach was considered a "serving". But spinach was not even on the list despite showing up in recipes!

They also stress the importance of saturated fat, yet the amount in the recipes seems pretty low. One meal menu, for example, just says "hard boiled eggs, smoked salmon, 3-4 tomato slices". And that's it? No mayo, butter, oil or anything? Just dry eggs, and dry salmon and dry tomato? Maybe you are allowed to use oils and fats, but I can't find anywhere that says so. When Irun the compoments of the daily diet through nutritional software it comes out far lower in fat than I am used to, and far lower than is typical on a low carb diet, which may be why I am so hungry all the time.

Then in weeks 3-4 you go into a more Atkins-induction type diet, but even here it's sometimes difficult to know what is allowed. The rules for weeks 3-4 list foods that can now be added as well as subtracted, but nuts are nowhere mentioned in the rules. Yet many of the recipes use almond flour, pine nuts, macadamia nuts. So what is the status of nuts?

Not to mention that nuts and nut flours don't show up in any of the substitution menus at the back of the book - which have only simple lists of veggies and fruits, so there is no way to know how or when nuts and nut flours can be used, or what they may or may not be substituted for.

This almost gives me a feel of a book that was rushed to publication, and yet I know its publication date was held up for months, so was not really a rush job. I don't want to give it only 1 or 2 stars as the Eadeses are among my nutritional heroes. But neither can I give it 5 starts, dearly as I had wanted to before receiving the book...which also arrived 4 days after the people who preordered from Barnes and Noble got theirs!

NOTE: I am just editing my review to add that I may well not be the intended audience for this book. I am not your casual middle-aged person who knows nothing about diet but would like to flatten my waistline a bit. I have an extensive diet library and have been studying low carb since I was first blown away by "Protein Power" in 1997. I really wanted this book to be of the caliber of "Protein Power" and I don't feel it comes close.

But for someone who is totally new to low carb, who doesn't much care about what gets them a flatter middle, and just wants to be told what to do and what to eat to get there, then perhaps this book will fill that need.

Product Description:
Why is it that even though we might maintain our high school weight, few of us maintain our high school belt size?

In your twenties and thirties, the layers of fat on top of your abs were the problem-but once you reach middle-age, the enemy shifts. The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle is the first book to deal specifically with the issues we face in the next stage of life, providing a plan for eliminating the unhealthy fat that accumulates around the organs-visceral fat-that is the true cause of the middle-aged bulge.

The good news is that with the right diet, visceral fat can be quickly reduced and eliminated, enhancing both your looks and your health. Even after twenty years researching and refining the science of weight loss and management, bestselling authors Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades fell victim to the middle-aged middle themselves. Although otherwise fit and healthy, both lost the flat belly that signals youth. In The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle, they share the simple dietary program they created to shed the weight.

Discover:
•How eating saturated fat can actively trim your middle
•Why the "eat less, exercise more" prescription fails-and what to do about it
•Why "inner" and "outer" tube fat measurements are important to your health
•How to fight the fat stored inside your liver that leads to hard-to-lose middle-body flab

With The 6-Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle the doctor duo that brought you to the low-carb lifestyle shows you how to regain in midlife the figure of sleek, flat-bellied youth.

The Hamptons Diet Cookbook: Enjoying the Hamptons Lifestyle Wherever You Live (Hardcover) Review

The Hamptons Diet Cookbook: Enjoying the Hamptons Lifestyle Wherever You LiveHow DO the rich and famous always seem to stay so thin and healthy? With the exception of maybe Danny DeVito and Rodney Dangerfield, can you think of very many movie stars who are overweight or obese? Probably not. That's because they have found the secret to eating better quality foods that not only satisfy their tastebuds, but also their nutritional needs.

Dr. Fred Pescatore first introduced his healthy weight loss principles in his groundbreaking 2004 bestselling book called The Hamptons Diet with Hollywood hotties Sara Jessica Parker and Ren?e Zellweger among its most ardent followers.

But now, by popular demand, Dr. Pescatore is back with a hot new book full of over 200 mouthwatering and flavorfully unique recipes called The Hampton's Diet Cookbook. While you may not be rich and famous, he shows you how you can eat like one with Mediterranean-styled cooking assistance from renowned chef Jeff Harter.

Once you try many of these recipes, you'll forget you're actually on a diet! That is the beauty of finding a low-carb program like The Hamptons Diet -- IT TASTES SO GOOD YOU CAN'T BELIEVE IT CAN HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT.

But it does. With countless numbers of people using this nutritional approach to lose weight in 2006, despite what the naysayers in the media and those pesky low-fat lovin' health "experts" say, the fact remains that this way of eating has worked and STILL continues to work to help people lose weight and keep it off for good. I lost over 180 pounds thanks to a healthy low-carb eating plan and you can too!

As a strong proponent of eating more organic whole foods as well as liberal amounts of macadamia nut oil, Dr. Pescatore wants the average, everyday person to look at food in an entirely different manner than they ever have before. Pay attention to the kind of carbohydrates that you are putting in your mouth and stick with the healthful slow-release ones as well as foods that are balanced according to the glycemic index and the glycemic load. The recipes in The Hampton's Diet Cookbook provide you with this balance.

Just in case you didn't get his original book, Dr. Pescatore provides an abridged version of The Hamptons Diet plan at the front of his new book to catch you up to speed, including explaining the various food pyramids that you will want to know about when you are on his diet. Trust me, throw out everything you thought you knew about diet and nutrition and keep your mind open to the greater possibilities that await you in this book.

There's even one chapter that explains what kind of kitchen appliances and tools you will need to start eating healthier. Hey, if you're gonna make the commitment to lose weight and keep it off, then what better way than to start anew than to literally clean house?! You'll also enjoy the convenient grocery shopping lists that Dr. Pescatore provides to keep you focused on what you need to do to get with the plan and make it happen for yourself.

The recipes in The Hampton's Diet Cookbook cover breakfast ("the most important meal of the day"), lunch (something light, nothing fancy), and dinner ("one of the most enjoyable and entertaining parts of the day"). Additionally, there are great side dishes and salads to combat boredom on the plan even if you can't make it look very good (Dr. Pescatore wrote that "the hardest thing for me is to get a salad to look pretty"). I can relate, but who cares when the taste is...mmmmmm!

For those of you who want to entertain guests and dazzle them with your low-carb cooking prowess, Dr. Pescatore presents a series of popular party recipes that will have them raving! Interestingly, you would think these recipes would need to be fancy-schmancy, but actually many of them are quite simple. The point is, Dr. Pescatore explains, to have fun with your life and stop worrying about food so much. It's time to eat better and be merry -- The Hamptons Diet way!

But what would a cookbook be without a few wonderfully tantalizing desserts?! However (and I LOVE this!), Dr. Pescatore makes it very clear up front what you won't see in his recipe book: "Sugar won't be used in any of these dessert recipes." EXCELLENT! That's just the way we like it when we are livin' la vida low-carb. A superb dissertation on what is acceptable as an alternative to sugar is included at the beginning of the dessert chapter to help you make the right choices about what you should use, including a list of the "healthy sweeteners" (Stevia, Xylitol), ones where the "jury is still out" (Splenda, maltitol), and finally the ones you really should "avoid" (hint: Nutrasweet didn't do so well).

At the back of the book, Dr. Pescatore includes in the appendix an amazing resource guide to help you find some of the ingredients that may be hard for you to find in your area. He earnestly wants to see you succeed at his plan and literally thought of everything for people who read The Hampton's Diet Cookbook.

Regardless of which low-carb plan you have been on, whether it's Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, or The Zone, The Hampton's Diet Cookbookwill give you even more succulent and tasty recipes your are sure to love and enjoy with your family. Eating healthy never tasted so good! That's the miracle of low-carb living. THANKS, Dr. Pescatore for continuing to be a champion of this amazingly miraculous way of eating!

Speed: The Only Weight Loss Book Worth Reading! (Perfect Paperback) Review

Speed: The Only Weight Loss Book Worth ReadingGet your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure, and whatever comes my way! I feel the need, the need for S.P.E.E.D.! It's not everyday you have the opportunity to get wild and enthusiastic about something like weight loss, but this book from nutrition and fitness experts Jeff Thiboutot and Matt Schoeneberger does just that. Unlike so many other diet books that are out there, this one takes into account a myriad of reasons why weight can go up and down including the biological, psychological and social issues involved. It's a short book by design and these guys have really done their homework.

With key references from science backing up each chapter of the book, Thiboutot and Schoeneberger methodically go through what they believe are the most essential elements of attaining the weight loss goals you desire. Obvious areas like exercise and diet come into play along with adequate sleep, an environment conducive for producing weight loss, and all the mental aspects of this process that are too often ignored. And for those people who like to have things broken down for them, there's a convenient "Do this..." section at the beginning of each chapter that outlines exactly what you need to do to implement this strategy into your life in just a few short bullet points.

My primary area of interest is on diet since I was able to shed 180 pounds in 2004 on a nutritional approach that is outside the mainstream of conventional thought, but yet it was incredibly effective for producing weight loss and outstanding health for me. Not surprisingly, I flipped over to Chapter 6 to see what the authors had to say about this and was thrilled by what I saw. They recommend eating real food that is low-carb, moderate-protein, and high-fat about 2-4 times daily or even every other day with an intermittent fasting strategy to get the weight down. The authors are fully convinced of the science behind low-carb diets and of their long-term safety based on the evidence they have seen in research studies as well as their own clients. I especially enjoyed them taking on the "high-protein" and ketosis concerns that are bantered about by the so-called health "experts" and in media reports about low-carb.

For all you lovers of conventional wisdom, be sure to check out the "Common Weight Loss Myths" chapter where Thiboutot and Schoeneberger take on some of the most embraced concepts about shedding that pounds...that are DEAD WRONG! Topics like a slow metabolism, eating lots of small meals throughout the day, eating late makes you gain weight, doing lots of cardio to lose weight, and so much more. There's a lot of junk information floating around out there in the minds of people because they've been fed this garbage for many years. This book hopes to debunk much of that misinformation.

Although this book is called S.P.E.E.D., don't think that the authors are promoting a super-duper fast weight loss plan that will shed something crazy like 30 pounds in 30 days off of your body. However, unlike the common notion that weight loss must be slow, they realize that's not true either. Shedding 3-6 pounds a week is entirely possible on a plan like this and I saw that in my own experience when I weighed over 400 pounds. The weight will come off quickly and then slow down appropriately as your body weight drops. And that's a beautiful thing! Don't believe the hype of shows like "The Biggest Loser" which make you think you need to lose double-digits every single week. It's not realistic to expect that to happen.

A full checklist of things to do is provided for you in this book, including a week's worth of sample menus, tips, reminders, and workouts. I truly believe if you read this short and concise book (it'll only take you a couple of hours) and implement the strategies Thiboutot and Schoeneberger share, then you will be well on your way to becoming the healthy and fit person you have always dreamed of being. Their intense focus on evidence-based solutions and not just scientific propaganda is one of the most refreshing things I've seen in a long time.

Natural Health & Weight Loss (Paperback) Review

Natural Health & Weight LossThere are three macronutrients in our diet: fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Only two are essential and carbohydrateisn't one of them.

It was mostly the sincerity of Dr. Groves' previous two books that prompted me to order his latest one, sight unseen and not a review in sight.

I was not disappointed.
For those unacquainted with the truth in matters of human nutrition, the contents of Natural Health And Weight Loss will raise some eyebrows.
Yes, Groves is right, if there are any culprits to be found in our nutrients, macro- or micro-, it is the carbohydrates. Notably the refined ones but also an excess of complex starches.

The roots of this book can be found in his 1999 publication Eat Fat And Get Thin but even starchy origins can bring about a veritable treasure, in this case a very practical book. The chapters are arranged in logical fashion and the pages contain a wealth of information and only few bits of clutter.

The subject matter of this is low carbohydrate dieting. Many books have been written on this, starting with Banting's original classic Letter Of Corpulence, to Atkins and other imitations. Like the author, I was inspired by British physician Richard Mackarness whose book Eat Fat And Grow Slim was published some 50 years ago. Written for the average blokes and sheilas (whom Mackarness called Mr. and Mrs. Fatten-Easily), it remains a classic. Dr. Groves attempted to go a step further, I believe. He educates the reader on the complex subject matter and demands a measure of concentration from those who are not well schooled in life science subjects. Yet, lazy couch potatoes and recliner pumpkins may skip the science and use the book as a manual.

Practicing meticulous attention to detail, Dr. Groves leaves no stone unturned in presenting evidence for what he espouses as the diet that will keep humans healthy. Rightlyhe emphasizes the crucial importance of the little known fact that it is FATS that are our most valuable foods and that the correct diet is not high protein but high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate . To the uninitiated, this book undoubtedly flies in the face of current wisdom. The self-appointed guardians of our health (who themselves have had precious little training in nutrition)keep presenting us with the same old faulty diet pyramids in the mistaken belief that adherence will contribute to the good health of society.

Well, as they say, the proof is in the pudding (which is not on Dr. Groves' list of preferred foods) and the verdict is in: The low carb way of eating works!

Once the reader gets into the 15th chapter (s)he will be aware that there is nothing strange about eating high fat, low carb fare. After all, humans evolved on it. A list of diseases is given that appear to have their origin in the consumption of excess carbohydrates and the subject of insulin and glucose excess and the resultant malfunctions are well covered. Groves goes into the limited usefulness of the Glycaemic Index and he provides information for diabetics.

On the basis of the astonishing amount of good information contained in 350 odd pages alone, this book deserves to be read by the Fatten-Easy crowd as well as those just curious.

Despite the current emphasis on 'healthy eating' obesity is increasing at an alarming rate, especially in children, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are reaching epidemic levels. Barry Groves tells us that this is because 'healthy eating' is anything but that; it is far too high in carbohydrates from fruit and grain and far too low in fats. Unlike carbohydrates, or proteins, fats do not compromise our insulin levels. They keep our metabolism functioning at a healthily high level and they stop us getting hungry too quickly. And they do not raise our cholesterol levels. Based on years of research, and personal experience, this book tells us how to change our diets and what the benefits of doing so will be. New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great. [Paperback] Review

New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great. [Paperback]I have hesitated to write a review because I am one of the success stories in this book. However, in light of T. Colin Campbell's unprofessional attack on this book, I believe I must speak up to share my story and the good health that has resulted in my following the Atkins plan.I am nearly 65 years old and have struggled with weight all my life.I've been on many diets including a vegetarian one with little results in either weight loss or improved health. In fact, my health markers were getting worse, and I suffered from arthritis, dry skin and elevated tryglyceride levels. My blood pressure was borderline. Since following the plan outlined in this book, I have lost weight, my arthritis has improved substantially (particularly in my neck and shoulders) and my dry skin (which 2 dermatologists had diagnosed as rosacea) has disappeared. My tryglyceride level dropped remarkably, but more importantly my HDL (the good cholesterol) has gone up and my latest BP was 117/76. I used to wear a size 18 -- now I wear a 6 or 8.All of these results came from following the plan outlined in this book.

What disturbs me further about T. Colin Campbell is that he has clearly put out a call to his vegan followers to come to the Amazon site and give bad reviews of this book, as he posted this nonsense on his webpage.I don't have a problem with their chosen lifestyle, but I do have a problem with the many deragatory posts that make it clear that they could not have read this book as they have no comprehension of its contents.Shame on them.Using the Amazon review system to grind their vegan axes should not be allowed.

Contrary to their ravings, the Atkins diet recommends lots of vegetables, a conservative amount of dietary protein and good fats. All recommendations that are supported by recent science. Read Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories" or the distinquished works of Dr. Mary Enig. T. Colin Campbell has used this review process to further his own agenda and has encouraged his minions to post here. They disparage the book as well as mouth urban legend lies about Dr. Robert Atkins (a cardiologist, BTW).Anyway, read the book and make your own conclusions.Don't be led astray by these agenda-led and untrue attacks. This 65 year old feels 20-30 years younger!!

Carb Wars: Sugar is the New Fat (Paperback) Review

Carb Wars: Sugar is the New FatThis book is amazing. My daughter sent me a copy and I was so impressed that I ordered two more for friends. It is more than a cook book, the research on diets through the last hundred years or so, and explanations on various sugars, alone was worth the price. The cooking notes on almost every page were very helpful. For anyone contemplating a carb restricted eating plan,or one who is trying to avoid sugar, this could literaly be a life saver.

The No S Diet: The Strikingly Simple Weight-Loss Strategy That Has Dieters Raving--and Dropping Pounds [Bargain Price] [Paperback] Review

The No S Diet: The Strikingly Simple Weight-Loss Strategy That Has Dieters Raving--and Dropping Pounds [Paperback]I don't buy diet books, I don't believe in depriving myself or regimenting my diet and I was able to be a size 00 up until my 28th-29th birthday, give or take.
Alas, I moved countries and picked a few bad eating habits along the way, 10 years later I'm flirting my way to a size 12 and I started wondering if the weight gain was ever going to stop.
I knew there had to be a way to bake my cake (I'm a cook) and eat it, I just refused to think that if I wanted to be slim again I should forever ration, scrutinize, divide my food and worse: say goodbye to a list of foods and ingredients.
Well, I found the way: the NoS Diet.
If I tell you that I have been eating this way until I moved countries and started gaining weight and that there is plenty of people that eat this way, you'll think there's something wrong either with me or with the book, I mean: isn't this a diet book?.
Yes and no; it is a diet book in the sense that by reading it and following it's premise, you'll lose weight and even better, you'll keep it off; it's not a diet book because there is no regime here, no menus, no recipes, no restrictions, no magic formula; this is a book that will tell you in a concise and precise way how is that your skinny friend manages to be skinny even though she has never dieted, how come those people in the '70s were all so skinny, how come ,even, is that you used to be thin once upon a time, like in my case.
This is a book about good habits and moderation, how to learn them or re-learn them and more importantly: how to keep remembering those good habits and keep them up for the rest of your life.

You want flashy testimonials?, sorry, none here; I can, however, tell you that I have lost three lbs in the month I've been following this book's advice, that I've been eating exactly the way I wanted to eat, that all guilt about food has been removed from my conscience, that my confidence has made a comeback, that all my dietary anxiety is gone.
You want to know what I've had today?: Raisin and walnut home baked bread with butter and honey and hot milk, chickpea and pasta stew with a drizzle of olive oil and parmesan cheese and egg korma, flatbread and mango for desert, all chosen by me, just because this is what I wanted to eat today, not bad, huh?

No Sweets No Snacks No Seconds except on Saturdays, Sundays and Special occasions, that's all there is to it, yes it's all in the cover, but reading the book is also very helpful, very explainative and you can always go back to it for reference.
In short:
This is gold.
I can do this.
YOU can do this.
Forever.
Do yourself a favor, buy this book and follow it's advice.

Oh and one last note: there is a review here that was left by someone concerned about the glowing reviews, don't be afraid, they are not fake, I am not fake, you can check my Amazon profile if you want, it's just that this book is simply that good.
If you want more information, go to the NoS diet website and check it out.
Bon Appetit!.
