Honest Nutrition: A Descent Into The Ocean Of Nutritional Prattle, And Coming Up For Air (Paperback) Review

Honest Nutrition: A Descent Into The Ocean Of Nutritional Prattle, And Coming Up For AirMany who write on the subject of nutrition and health are intelligent, educated and knowledgeable. Honest Nutrition by Ira Edwards is noteworthy because the author writes as a health consumer; he does not have a health product or service to promote. To his credit, Edwards has no bias for or against conventional medicine, alternative medicine or herbal healing. He lays out the benefits, problems and costs of various nutritional, herbal and medical modalities with careful attention to biochemical realities.

Over several decades, Edwards has investigated the authenticity of many scientific studies that are commonly accepted in health and medical practice. His education and professional experience, in biochemistry and in scientific methodology, well qualify him to see through a fraudulent veneer where it exists. Among innumerable subjects, his findings on cholesterol are important to anyone interested in maintaining good health.

Although retired, Edwards has stayed current with scientific discovery. The book is abundantly filled with timely, relevant information. For me, it has been a marvelous resource, dropped into my hands at an appropriate time to help with important (and beneficial) health decisions.

Product Description:
Honest Nutrition is an attempt to do what textbooks and hundreds of diet books do not. Nutrition textbooks do not tell you that this science is in its infancy, nor how many "scientific" claims are open to question, based on faulty research or simple hunches. If they include some of the biochemical and physiological context of nutrition, they still omit financial, social and political aspects.

After attempting to understand the prejudice against vitamins and supplements among the industrial-medical-political Big Brother (IMP-BB) and the lack of evidence for most alternatives, there is still some useful information.

Opposing philosophies are denoted as SUPR (SUrgery-PRescription orientation) and UTHR (Unconventional Therapies, Herbal Remedies.)

Honest Nutrition uses a large alphabetical section to give easy access to useful information about many diseases and nutritional therapies.

Honest Nutrition includes information about hormone resistance diseases, cryptic infections as a cause of "unknown etiology" diseases, and the effect of nutrition on behavior and criminality.

Some claims:

1. Obesity always involves hormones, sometimes with positive-feedback loops, which is why "Just eat less and exercise" seldom works.2. A major factor in arterial disease is viscous blood, resulting in part from a lack of omega-3 fat. Cholesterol lowering does not help.3. Some heart attacks may be due to hormonal effects, involving the hormone ouabain, and preventable with an extract of the herb strophanthus. 4. Many, or most North Americans suffer serious lack of nutrients: vitamin D, magnesium, and plant nutrients.

The author challenges the medical establishment to examine their doctrines and learn how to help people suffering from nutritional diseases. Many technical terms are included. The non-scientific reader is asked to skip over these, to gain a useful knowledge of nutrition.

The Love-Powered Diet: Eating for Freedom, Health, and Joy (Paperback) Review

The Love-Powered Diet: Eating for Freedom, Health, and JoyAs a researcher & writer, I have read many books on how to get past an eating disorder, and I have to say this is the best. Packed with tools and tips, as well as a great deal of empathetic anecdotes of her own eating disorder past, Victoria has made this a must-read book for those struggling with eating issues.

How I wish I had had this book 36 years ago when I had bulimia, which was 7 years of pure hell. I found it quite humorous when Victoria described fishing some cake out of a trash can during an eating binge, until I suddenly recalled the disgust and self-loathing of having done it myself as a young woman struggling with this food demon.

This is not a diet book in the sense that it prescribes a meal plan, food restrictions, calorie countingor carb/fat/protein ratios. In fact, there are not even any recipes! The diet to be given is LOVE (for yourself) and Victoria tells you how.

Victoria's solutions for low self esteem, which so often leads to binging, range from spirituality with no particular religion (in fact, there is even a list of prayers from a wide variety of philosophies/religions), 12 Steps, journaling, tips on how to get to the self-love consciousness of what she calls "zero point," and proven insights such as blatant honesty. Meditation is also a strong tool, and Victoria shares her own daily ritual which is loosely called meditation, but is more like self-reflection. (For people who get bored chanting mantras, her routine would be perfect!)

Though the book doesn't prescribe a specific diet (except for love!)Victoria nonetheless strongly recommends her own way of eating, which is vegetarian. In fact, I was delightfully surprised to find she went on to become a raw vegan! She writes, "I myself have taken to the high-raw lifestyle in the past year and although I don't care to make it a religion or go a hundred percent raw, I must say that I feel younger, lighter, and more alive than I have in years." As another recovering food addict, I am happy to hear that, since the raw diet did so much to heal my own eating disorder.

This book will also educate you on the pitfalls of the SAD (standard America diet) way of eating, benefits of organic, sprouts, and other factors of health besides diet. Every chapter is filled with sidebars with all kinds of fascinating information.

Highly recommended for anyone who uses food for a substitute for love.

Eat It Up! The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss Surgery (Paperback) Review

Eat It Up The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss SurgeryI am a weight loss surgery patient and I've been looking for this kind of book and help for years! I found myself nodding my head, highlighting sentences and paragraphs, and feeling understood. There is a huge void in the world of weight loss surgery that is seldom being filled. Those of us who are 3 or more years out of the surgery come to realize that it isn't about losing the weight, but keeping it off and that means dealing with the mental and psychological issues surrounding food, eating and exercise. The literature and follow-up provided seldom addresses those issues. This book does. And Dr. Stapleton has done it in a way that is very accessible. She lays out the issues one by one and gives examples, how our minds tend to work (or don't work), ideas for change and even exercises at the end of the chapters to help us get on the right track to change how we think and do.It's an important book to read and digest wherever you are on your journey toward a healthier life through weight loss, but especially helpful to those of us who are struggling. I've been recommending this book to my friends and coaching clients and highly recommend it to anyone with eating issues. It's a great companion to my own book "Fat No More - Long Term Success Following Weight Loss Surgery" which addresses many of the physical issues and some of the mental issues facing weight loss surgery patients.
