The Jean Nidetch Story: An Autobiography (Paperback) Review

The Jean Nidetch Story: An AutobiographyOn Columbus Day, October 12, 1923, Jean Slutsky was born in New York City. Her father was thin. Her mother was fat. Young Jean weighed only 7 pounds-plus at birth but grew steadily larger than she should, a roly poly baby, a chubby teen. She lost some weight to marry in 1947 an even fatter husband, Marty Nidetch, a happy-go-lucky bus driver. Their greatest joy was dining out together, always on the lookout for places that served free second helpings.

In September 1961, just before her 38th birthday, now a mother, 5' 7" Jean Nidetch weighed 214 pounds and sported size 44 dresses. Marty was 5'10" and weighed 265 pounds. In a supermarket that day a friend asked Jean when she was "due." Not pregnant, Jean was shaken. Within weeks she had enrolled in a New York City Department of Health Obesity Clinic, with a very rigid list of those foods and only those that might be and must be eaten. In the first ten weeks Jean lost 20 pounds but found no one at the Obesity Clinic who wanted to pat her on the back for her success. Any whining by Jean or other dieters was cut off ruthlessly.

Jean decided that she would never lose the 74 pounds the Obesity Clinic demanded without sympathetic overweight friends who could empathize with her struggle. Going it alone with no "atta girls" was not for Jean. She called six girl friends together and told them the drastic diet she was on that had made her shed 20 pounds (despite nighttime cheating with chocolate marshmallow cookies). Their first reaction: "You don't look it!" (Ch. 4, p. 41)

But the group kept meeting every week, pledged to follow the New York City diet. As Jean lectured away, part mother hen, part advocate, the group kept on growing. On October 30, 1962 Jean Slutsky Nidetch met her weight loss goal: down 72 pounds to 142, dress size from 44 to 12. And her friends did well, too.

Soon, with some legal help, Jean founded WEIGHT WATCHERS, INTERNATIONAL. And the rest, as they say, is history. Its 1961 creation, the weekly adult education, weigh-in and support group meeting, remains at its core.

I found this a fascinating read, full of insights and tips. For example, early on Jean decided there had to be a reason why some people are thin. Did it have to do with their eating style? She soon noticed that thin people put their forks down between bites. Fat people never set down a fork! They gestured with their forks. Their forks were almost an extension of their personality.

And on and on: fat people lie to themselves. Every fat person has his or her "Frankenstein," a favorite food not to be given up under any circumstances, they say. For example, chocolate marshmallow cookies, doughnuts. Jean persuaded one man to give up doughnuts until he shed 88 pounds. He did. When he was where his weight should be, he rushed out for doughnuts. But almost gagged on them, it would seem.

Traditional diets, Jean said, you can't wait for them to be over and done with -- and then regain what you lost. Weight Watchers, Jean argues, is different: not a crash diet but a new, healthy steady as you go lifestyle. You are determined never again to be separated from the new, slim, healthy you.

This is not Mrs Nidetch's first book. It is chatty, low-key, modest. She never managed Weight Watchers, the corporation. But she was its founder and remains its number one spokesman in popularity. For a simple, brief (128 pages) first person narrative, THE JEAN NIDETCH STORY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY is a convincing retelling of the old Horatio Alger rags to riches narrative of American entrepreneurship.

-OOO-

In the interest of full disclosure: I am a 6' 1" 74-year old male semi-couch potato, who spends most of my days reading, writing, lecturing and teaching occasional adult education classes. If I am lucky, I do an hour of exercise a day, including tai chi. I have been a Weight Watcher for three-plus years. I lost 11 pounds on my own just before starting the program. Under Weight Watchers, with more than one falling off then climbing back on the wagon, I have lost another 34 pounds. I need to lose 31 more to hit my maximum upper weight limit of 189 pounds. Obviously, I am not setting a record for speedy weight loss.

I am also a moderately active investor in stocks. In November 2007, over the objections of my financial advisor, I bought 20 shares of Weighwatchers International (NYSE: WTW) stock at $49.98/share. The last time I looked, my 20 shares had lost slightly more than half their value. I still own WTW for the same reason I bought it: to make myself read annual reports and think about and understand both the good and debatable things that WTW is doing for shareholders as well as for its employees and for overweight people like me. My doctor has prescribed membership for me. I admire most things about WTW, but do not shill for it. End full disclosure.

The One-Day Way: Today Is All the Time You Need to Lose All the Weight You Want [Hardcover] Review

The One-Day Way: Today Is All the Time You Need to Lose All the Weight You Want [Hardcover]I recently bought this book for Kindle and am not quite finished. But I can say that if you are trying to lose weight and become the best, all around, healthy person you can be then Chantel Hobbs' story will truly inspire you.I've been on a weight loss, training journey for about 14 months now and Chantel's first book, Never Say Diet, has been a constant reference for me along the way. This is a woman who with the demands of life like marriage, family, 4 kids, sick parents, etc. had the dedication and determination to start excercising and change the way she ate and how she went from 349 lbs to now RUNNING MARATHONS.Even though some of her writing seems directed toward women, I am a 48 yo male and I too have been encouraged by her story and successes.I'm not running marathons...YET...but I have dropped almost 80 lbs and am running 5Ks on a regular basis. What I've picked up so far from The One Day Way seems to be a simplification of some of the principles I learned from Never Say Diet.We can't look at life's challenges, such as weight loss, and focus on how high the 'mountain' might be and get discouraged that we can never reach the top.The only way to get to the top of the 'mountain' is by taking one step at a time. That's what you will learn from Chantel...take One Day at a Time and before long you are climbing up the 'mountain' and if you keep climbing you can reach the top!

In summary, read BOTH books and see how Chantel can help you change your life.

The Love-Powered Diet: Eating for Freedom, Health, and Joy (Paperback) Review

The Love-Powered Diet: Eating for Freedom, Health, and JoyAs a researcher & writer, I have read many books on how to get past an eating disorder, and I have to say this is the best. Packed with tools and tips, as well as a great deal of empathetic anecdotes of her own eating disorder past, Victoria has made this a must-read book for those struggling with eating issues.

How I wish I had had this book 36 years ago when I had bulimia, which was 7 years of pure hell. I found it quite humorous when Victoria described fishing some cake out of a trash can during an eating binge, until I suddenly recalled the disgust and self-loathing of having done it myself as a young woman struggling with this food demon.

This is not a diet book in the sense that it prescribes a meal plan, food restrictions, calorie countingor carb/fat/protein ratios. In fact, there are not even any recipes! The diet to be given is LOVE (for yourself) and Victoria tells you how.

Victoria's solutions for low self esteem, which so often leads to binging, range from spirituality with no particular religion (in fact, there is even a list of prayers from a wide variety of philosophies/religions), 12 Steps, journaling, tips on how to get to the self-love consciousness of what she calls "zero point," and proven insights such as blatant honesty. Meditation is also a strong tool, and Victoria shares her own daily ritual which is loosely called meditation, but is more like self-reflection. (For people who get bored chanting mantras, her routine would be perfect!)

Though the book doesn't prescribe a specific diet (except for love!)Victoria nonetheless strongly recommends her own way of eating, which is vegetarian. In fact, I was delightfully surprised to find she went on to become a raw vegan! She writes, "I myself have taken to the high-raw lifestyle in the past year and although I don't care to make it a religion or go a hundred percent raw, I must say that I feel younger, lighter, and more alive than I have in years." As another recovering food addict, I am happy to hear that, since the raw diet did so much to heal my own eating disorder.

This book will also educate you on the pitfalls of the SAD (standard America diet) way of eating, benefits of organic, sprouts, and other factors of health besides diet. Every chapter is filled with sidebars with all kinds of fascinating information.

Highly recommended for anyone who uses food for a substitute for love.

Never Say Diet: Make Five Decisions and Break the Fat Habit for Good [Bargain Price] (Hardcover) Review

Never Say Diet: Make Five Decisions and Break the Fat Habit for Good [Bargain Price]Chantel Hobbs started her fight with obesity when she was 11 years old. Realizing that she was different from other children because she was bigger than them, she endeavored to lose her excess weight through dieting. But these diets did not help her in her fight.

At age 21 she married her high school sweetheart, and six months later she was pregnant with their first child. During this time, she did not concern herself with her weight issues. Even though inside she was feeling ugly and helpless, to the world she showed a self-confident and strong Chantal Hobbs. It was not until she had her third child and was at 349 pounds that Chantel hit bottom. She realized that she needed to change and that no diet in the world could help her.

She heard God's voice reminding her to be the best that she could be. Hence, that day she decided that she will start to take care of her body and health. With the help of God, her husband Keith, and her family and friends, she started a way of life that enabled her to lose weight. Today she is more than 200 pounds lighter and still keeping it off.

Chantel Hobbs book is very enlightening. For those fighting obesity, dieting is not always the answer. Dieting lasts for a month or two and then it is back to the same routine of eating unhealthy food. Chantel encourages her readers to change their way of thinking so that the desire to live life to the fullest is the foremost desire. She has introduced a winning combination of healthy eating and exercising designed to decrease the weight and to keep it off.

Her book also offers five phases that a person losing weight goes through, which I found extremely helpful. The phases also have routine exercises that are designed to lose weight, and the pictures make it easier to do them.

Reading her story and her struggles with weight will give many readers hope about their own weight issues. Her helpful points and ideas will encourage readers to step out and change their way of thinking so that they can achieve the results that Chantel got!

Armchair Interviews says: This is a must read for those struggling with their weight and those who are disappointed with diets and their poor results!
