The Martini Diet: The Self-Indulgent Way to a Thinner, More Fabulous You! (Hardcover) Review

The Martini Diet: The Self-Indulgent Way to a Thinner, More Fabulous YouDon't be fooled by the title, "The Martini Diet" by Jennifer "Gin" Sander, is not a version of the drinking man's diet. Instead it's a truly delcious way to lose weight!

The Martini Diet consists of 3 very simple rules: Rule #1 - Eat only the very best. Rule #2 - Eat somewhat less of the very best and Rule #3 - Eat the very best only at mealtimes (ie no snacking). According to Gin if you follow these rules the pounds will drop.

Personally I have tried a number of methods to lose the baby weight I gained (and baby is 14) from questionable supplements to lo-fat foods to food combining to Weight Watchers. I would get very hyped on these plans only to discover that none of it worked LONG TERM. You see, I like my comforts and that includes chocolate, wine, good bread, etc. So I just couldn't stick to programs that didn't include these goodies or that encouraged eating fake foods that made my appetite increase!

Gin's book teaches balancing pleasure with moderation. If you give up the fake, tacky foods like processed cheese whiz, and diet nutrition bars and lo-fat fake cookies etc. and if you eat real food in modest portions and don't snack much if at all, you can lose weight. And you will LOVE the process.

My dinner last night was a simple piece of grilled chicken, corn on the cob (no, you dont have to give up starches..just eat them in modest portions) and asparagus. Washed down with a glass of zin and chased by a piece of rich dark chocolate. What could be better?

I love Gin's book because of the refreshing way she writes. She entreats you to become a food snob and turn your nose up at the twinkies and boxed scalloped potatoes. You are too good for that. I love the way Gin tells you to treasure yourself and indulge in the very best.

However, there are a few things that bothered me about the book. The first is though Gin implores you to eat "REAL FOOD" she confesses she has a penchant for Slim-fast. Though Gin tells you to "LOVE YOUR FOOD" she then shares that she enjoys Slim-fast because, "it gets that morning meal out of the way". Huh? What happened to enjoying your food? She also includes recipes at the back of the book and a few include questionable ingredients like soda pop.

Despite the few inconsistencies, I give the book top ratings because of the core message. Gin's message is to "Spoil Yourself Thin". This will help you get out of the weight loss means depriviation and punishment mode. She suggests you treat yourself to the best food. When you get a craving, pamper yourself by beautifying yourself instead of eating. You participate in exercise you love instead of killing yourself at workouts you hate.

By now you may be wondering why the title, "The Martini Diet". This is because Gin suggests you indulge each day in a glass of wine or martini for the health benefits and pure enjoyment. She also gives simple techniques to figure out your portions sizes by using a martini glass. Nifty!

Gin admits she is not a scientist or doctor. She is just sharing what works for her. So if you read around the inconsistencies and stick to the core of what she is sharingyou will have fun with the book. Gin wants you to enjoy your life and losing weight can be a pleasure if you follow her tips.

Product Description:
There's a yet another new Harvard study out that shows that regular moderate drinking can lower your risk of heart attack. This study, which followed 40,000 men for twelve years, found out that those who drank one or two alcoholic drinks 5 to 7 days a week lowered their risk of heart attack 30 percent. (Women also benefit but they must weigh those benefits against the risk of breast cancer. Still, far more women die of heart disease than breast cancer.) Similar studies show that caffeine is good for you, as is red meat and salmon and red wine and anything dipped in olive oil.
The truth is, good food and drink is good for you. So why deprive yourself? Think of the most self-indulgent people you know the ones who never miss their morning lattes and their evening martinis, dine at the best restaurants, hire personal trainers, indulge in weekly massages and facials. Odds are they're as thin as they are spoiled. This book will uncover the reasons why some of the most indulgent people are also the healthiest (like the French Paradox, which explored why French people can eat so much rich food and drink so much wine and still be thin and have low rates of heart disease).
So spoil yourself thin with The Martini Diet. Inside you'll find all the ways in which you can indulge yourself and get into shape at the same time. Not only will you live longer, you'll have a heck of a lot more fun.

Waistland: The R/evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis [Hardcover] Review

Waistland: The R/evolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis [Hardcover]Waistland's main premise is that you can't just "trust your instincts" or "listen to your body" in the current food environment. Barrett goes on a hunt into prehistory to show how our bodies evolved in a world where salt, sugar, and fat were scarce and desirable. Now we live in a word where those substances are not only plentiful, but in which images of them are beamed at us constantly. Waistland describes how refined foods affect us similarly to addictive drugs.
Barrett says we need to learn to "listen to our intellect" before our brains evolve back to the minimum needed to locate the Twinkies in the grocery aisle. She advocates radical change for those seeking to eat healthier and lose weight. Simply ordering the smaller size of fries or eating desert twice a week is actually harder physically in terms triggering hunger signals than eliminating them entirely: more painful in the first few days but ultimately easier to maintain because insulin, glucose, and leptin levels normalize.
Barrett also trashes the "too busy to time to eat healthy" argument. She has a half joking, half serious "recipe"section that points out you can dump tuna over baby spinach or walk out of a 7-11 with nuts and fruit faster than you can get through the line at a burger chain. For those with "no time to exercise," she reminds us the average American watches more than 3 hours of TV a day.
She also has suggestions for society to change the whole food environment. She points out that short of banning foods--which she does advocate for transfats--we can start by reversing crazy policies like subsidizing the growing of corn and sugar and instead setting financial incentives to favor healthy vegetables.
Waistland is full of research culled form academic sources you haven't seen in popular books before. But it's also an extremely entertaining read, with witty observations and delightful New Yorker cartoons. Whether you're just trying to understand our society's health problems or wanting to get yourself back on track with sane eating and exercise, this is the smartest, most readable book out there on the topic.

Product Description:
Harvard psychologist Deirdre Barrett tackles the obesity and fitness crisis from an evolutionary standpoint. In the modern jungle of burgers, couches, and remote controls, obesity is an enormous and growing epidemic. Weight-loss books and diet gurus urge us to "listen to our bodies," but our instincts are designed for the African savannah, not food courts. The sugary and fatty foods that we, as hunter-gatherers, are programmed to forage used to be hard to come by. Now they're as close as the vending machine down the hall.

Radical changes are necessary and, fortunately, are biologically easier than small or gradual changes in diet. Barrett tells us how to reprogram our bodies, break food addictions, and ignore our attraction to "supernormal stimuli"—artificial creations that appeal to our instincts more than the natural objects they mimic. Barrett delves into scientific research—from animal ethology to evolution—to show the disastrous direction in which our instincts have led us, and how, using our intellect, we can get back on course. 50 illustrations.

Let's Do Lunch: Eating all the Calories and Carbs you want to lose weight! (Hardcover) Review

Let's Do Lunch: Eating all the Calories and Carbs you want to lose weightAs someone who has lost over 180 pounds naturally through diet and exercise, I have grown to love and admire anyone else who has been able to do the same for themselves.

That's why I was so anxious to read Roger Troy Wilson's story about losing an unbelievable 230 pounds in his new book called Let's Do Lunch. As a low-carb weight loss success story myself, I just HAD to know how he lost his weight and kept it off for many years now.

Well, what I discovered was the most peculiar and unique "diet" plan I think I have ever seen in my life. It's definitely NOT low-carb, low-fat, low-calorie, or portion-controlled. None of those ever worked for him no matter how hard he tried to lose weight on them. I don't know where Wilson came up with this way of eating, but it helped him shed the pounds and keep it off. Anything that can help you do that is worth taking a look at.

In Let's Do Lunch, Wilson not only shares his story about ballooning up to a "5-foot waist" (my waist got as big as 5'2"!), but also the many letters of thanks he has received from those who have enjoyed his special program. The enthusiasm these people have after losing weight is contagious and makes you want to know how the Let's Do Lunch plan works.

As a very successful businessman, Wilson knew he had a problem with obesity but ignored it for many years. As many of us former 400+ pounders will attest, the rollercoaster ride of lose, gain, lose, gain was ruthless. Trying time after time to find that one way of eating that will sustain us for the rest of our lives was challenging and draining. Surely there had to be a better way to control your weight?!

For Wilson, there was. And actually he can thank his son for getting him started on the greatest achievement of his life. When they say the old phrase "out of the mouth of babes," it was definitely true for Wilson.

His son had put some grapes in the freezer to have as a refreshing and delicious treat later in the day. But when Wilson found the grapes in the freezer, he immediately thought they were ruined and started blaming everyone for it. He went to his wife first, but she said she didn't do it. So then he calls his son and I'm sure he responded something along the lines of, "Chill out, Dad, it's cool. You've never tasted grapes this good before!"

And so Wilson tried one of these frozen fruits and was just amazed by how incredibly delicious they were. So he kept eating and eating them. He did the same thing the next night and the next night beginning a pattern that eventually led to the basis for the Let's Do Lunch program that helped him shed those pounds.

While Wilson makes it clear this is not a fruit diet, fruits of all kinds are highly encouraged to eat in the quantities of your choice. Besides the fruit, most of the rest of the Let's Do Lunch plan is fairly close to livin' la vida low-carb -- eliminate sugar, starches, and unnecessary carbs and consume more protein for satiety. As for the high sugar content in all of that fruit he endorses, Wilson said he doesn't think that sugar is fattening although the sugar found in candy bars and sweets is fattening. Hmmmm.

I chuckled when I read about how the "thin" version of Wilson is getting so much attention these days because I can personally relate to that experience. You life really does change after losing such a dramatic amount of weight. But I am envious of Roger Troy Wilson. He got his tummy tuck after losing weight and is so happy with it. This is a struggle for so many of us who have lost weight, but now have the hanging skin to look at every single day. Someday it will happen, someday. Wilson said it has made all the difference in the world how he sees himself when he looks in the mirror.

In a nutshell, the Let's Do Lunch weight loss plan calls for four things: eat fruit, make lunch your priority meal of the day, eat less fattening foods that you enjoy, and have corn, beans, and peas instead of bread, pasta, potatoes or rice. That's it. Do those things and you are well on your way to losing weight the way Wilson did it.

Of course, you will want to read Let's Do Lunch to get a better understanding of the who, what, where, why, when, how of this new way of eating. His "Helpful Tips" chapter answers all of those nagging questions you may be having about dieting in general and how Let's Do Lunch works to melt away the fat from your body. You'll have to turn to page 55 to see how often you should weigh yourself. It's not what you think.

Wilson also helps you deal with the inevitable cravings you will experience, what to do when you feel the desire to cheat, how to order when you eat out at a fast-food or sit-down restaurant.

But I know you are wondering about that little word known as exercise. Am I gonna have to sweat myself to death on this diet? In a word, nope! Wilson said exercise is not required on his program, but it will most certainly enhance the weight loss and health benefits you will enjoy if you do. Your body will also become more toned, energetic, and active. When you shed over 100 pounds off of your body, you cannot help but start moving faster and faster in every activity that you do. I am more active today than I have ever been in my entire life. And I'm sure Wilson is as well.

There is a structured 14-day eating plan for people who need to be told how to eat. Follow it strictly if you need guidance about doing the Let's Do Lunch plan. Wilson even provides a handy grocery shopping list about what you can and cannot buy to eat on his program. And in case you were wondering, what would a book about weight loss be without throwing in a few favorite recipes at the back of the book?

Wilson has made the Let's Do Lunch so user-friendly that you won't have any trouble reading it from cover to cover in one sitting. What an amazing story of weight loss triumph and success Wilson has to share. While my path to becoming skinny was very different from his, I have great respect and admiration for anyone who can get their obesity under control for good.

Won't you be the next Roger Troy Wilson to change your life forever? If so, then Let's Do Lunch.

Product Description:
Based on the results of biomedical, clinical, and health research from hundreds of scientists worldwide. Written for the general public and medical professionals.

Clinique Science Weight Loss is a book that describes a simple method to lose weight rapidly and completely, while improving health and reducing the risk of many diseases (in¬cluding cardiovascular disease and cancer). At the core of this method are medicinal foods and The Plateau-proof Diet.
Among the medicinal foods are herbs and spices that directly cause weight loss, and many others that maintain and/or improve certain vital aspects of health and wellness. Medicinal foods are a very important component of this weight loss system because they either affect weight loss directly, or they improve the physiological deficiencies that make weight loss difficult or impossible. Physiological deficiencies such as very early stage (pre-disease) glu¬cose intolerance, for example, tend to complicate weight loss while favoring weight gain. These deficiencies can easily be reversed by the proper use of medicinal foods. We there¬fore cannot overemphasize the important role of medicinal foods in a rapid and sustainable weight loss.
The Plateau-proof diet is a rotation diet that is designed to prevent the dreaded weight loss plateau. Drawing from the research of several hundred scientists from across the world, this diet uses two formulas to assign numbers (a Carb/Protein and a Fat/Protein index) to all foods. Basically, there is a rotation between low-carb (standardized to protein) and low-fat (standardized to protein). Without standardizing to the right type of proteins, weight loss would be unpredictable, slow in most people, and easily reversible in almost all people. The main culprit responsible for the rapid weight gain after weight loss is the human growth hormone (more appropriately the lack thereof). The human growth hormone is respon¬sible for maintaining leanness in the adult human. The secretion of this hormone is sup¬pressed or inhibited upon weight gain, while the secretion of its antagonist (human growth hormone binding peptide) is increased. If this deficient hormonal axis is not reversed in the course of weight loss, the subject will invariably regain weight. The Plateau-proof Diet uses protein standardization to reverse the deficiency in human growth hormone, and therefore to prevent the weight loss plateau and the subsequent weight gain.
There is no doubt that a relatively healthy subject will lose weight easier and maintain leanness, which is why Clinique Science Weight Loss is designed to improve health while affecting a rapid and sustainable weight loss. This method is relatively easy to follow and is inexpensive. The system does not require counting, calculations, extensive planning, and other vexations that one would expect from a science-based weight loss program. Also, The Plateau-proof Diet is not very restricting since it is a rotation diet.
Since the Clinique Science Weight Loss system starts affecting vital physiological param¬eters from day one, potential users are advised to talk with their physician prior to starting. Some basic screening will be done that will help individuals to derive the most benefit out of the system. The screening will include: total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cho¬lesterol, triglycerides, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio. This screening will allow individuals to emphasize certain medicinal foods to correct applicable deficiencies while they lose weight.
