The Schwarzbein Principle, The Program: Losing Weight the Healthy Way (Paperback) Review

The Schwarzbein Principle, The Program: Losing Weight the Healthy WayImagine a world where you no longer view it through weight or food obsession eyes.I have entered such a world because of the steps to good health presented in The Schwarzbein Program. This was not an overnight success for me.I practiced and practiced the steps, mastering them one at a time, one day at a time, on my own unique schedule.I have learned the palate can change over time adjusting to being without sugar and man made carbohydrates.I never thought I could live without bread, ice cream or cake.I proved myself wrong. In fact I am living a fuller, healthier and rested life without these foods.I no longer over exercise and I pay attention to my stress, because I know I am the most important person in my life. And, without my health I can not add to the lives of others around me.

When I began my journey I did gain weight, 15 pounds, because my system was so damaged from years of sugar addiction and starvation dieting. And, even though I was gaining weight, I felt appreciably better.Encouraged by feeling healthier, a year and half later just of few of the miraculous changes are, I have currently lost 20 pounds, my skin is luminescent, the mental fog has disappeared, my painful menstruation is nonexistence and my emotional life is calmer.I am feeling free in my own body.

I was brave enough to walk away from conventional dieting wisdom and courageous to venture into the unknown, to trust a woman who had the clinical background to support her hypothesis about the correct way the body needs to be fed.I promise you, this is it; this program will end your suffering.

I highly suggest you find a nutritionist or a doctor who is familiar with her work to help you with the program. As I believe you will need a partner to guide you with the changes you will need to make and advise you on using the correct supplementation your body may need.

Think about what your life will look like tomorrow when food and weight is no longer the enemy.I have been given this opportunity to find out and it better than anything I imagined.

At last! Bestselling author Diana Schwarzbein puts her metabolism balancing principles into a simple five-step program.
In The Schwarzbein Principle, which has sold more than 250,000 copies, Dr. Diana Schwarzbein laid out her revolutionary secret to long-term health and weight control: balance your metabolism to re-energize your immune system. Her optimal health program included steps to:
Balance a low-carb/low-fat diet; reduce stress through calming exercises;taper off chemical dependency to tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine; eliminate cardio exercise in favor of resistance training and stretching.
Now, for the first time, Dr. Schwarzbein gives readers what they have been asking for: week-by-week steps they can use to implement this system into their lives. The pay-off for making the switch? A renewed metabolic system that creates long-term health, vitality, energy, slower aging, and the ideal body. While other diet programs promise little more than a temporary crash weight loss regimen, Dr. Schwarzbein's plan offers something much better: a permanent body change and an end to yo-yo dieting. The 7 Principles of Fat Burning: Get Healthy, Lose Weight and Keep It Off! [Hardcover] Review

The 7 Principles of Fat Burning: Get Healthy, Lose Weight and Keep It Off [Hardcover]Warning: If you follow Dr. Berg's plan properly, you will need to cut out alcohol, coffee, tea, processed foods, sweets, pastries, breads, grains, potatoes (i.e., most carbs), and junk food of any kind, i.e., 90% of what makes up the average American supermarket, and average American diet. Can you handle it? This book might not be for you.

On the good side, you do not need to cut calories, you can eat fatty foods like avocados and olive oil, don't need to worry about the fats in meats (within reason), eat as many eggs as you want, you must not let yourself get hungry, don't necessarily have to exercise that strenuously or that often, and when you reach your goal, you can add back some of those foods you cut out originally (except the really bad stuff).

I learned about this book because my chiropractor uses it. The title emphasizes fat-burning, but early on he makes it clear that gaining weight is just one of many symptoms resulting from a body out of health, because one or more of your organs are unhealthy and poorly functioning. He focuses on adrenal glands, thyroid glands, the liver and ovaries. This state of poor health is due to the average American diet - high in refined carbohydrates and toxic chemicals added to the meats and vegetables we eat, and to our over-stressed life-styles and sleep deprivation.

Over the last few years from my mid 30s to mid 40s, I've had a number of annoying symptoms building up more and more that doctors have shrugged their shoulders about and sent me on my way: chronic sinus headaches, allergic rhinitis, ringing ears, gradual development of food sensitivities (can't eat bread or anything with wheat now), endometriosis and ovarian cysts, chronic fatigue, chronic anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and weight gain around the middle are a few. I tried following the reduce-calories-and-exercise-more doctrine for the weight gain, and after a year I was exactly the same weight as before. None of these things made any sense, based on all the stuff I was reading about how to lose weight. I couldn't figure out what to do about the other stuff either. So when I read Eric Berg's book, I could not put it down!! He explained every one of those symptoms - why they happen, and what you can do about it! I was so excited! Finally! Someone understands!! So I'm not going crazy! It was almost like he knew me!

The book is very clearly written and very easy to follow. The author does tend to be repetitive, though. Some people might be put off and think there is too much to wade through, but actually, a lot of it is just explaining the same thing over again in a different context.

You need to determine what body type you are at the beginning: adrenal/ovary or liver/thyroid. You do this by taking a questionnaire of your symptoms. Weight gain is one of the symptoms, and the shape of your body is indicative of which glands or organs are not functioning well. Then you follow the meal plans and exercise for that body type. What is interesting is that if you are an adrenal/ovary type (like me) you shouldn't do high impact exercise if you're trying to lose weight as that will stress the adrenals more, and is more likely to lead to more fat being deposited rather than fat burning. Instead you should do a low impact, aerobic workout. So that explains why I was never able to lose weight with exercise until now.

I have been following the diet for 3 weeks now, starting with the 14 day Liver Enhancement diet, which is supposed to be almost entirely raw vegetables and fruit. Reading all the reviews other people wrote, I think most people are not as bad as I am with their adrenal function, because after 3 weeks I only lost 3 lbs of water-retention, and no fat loss. He explains that adrenal types tend not to lose too much weight right at the beginning and explains why. However, my body's pH went from a 5 (way too acidic) to a 7 (perfect!). He explains why you need to have a more alkaline (pH 7) body for long-term health and weight loss. No long-term weight loss unless you take care of the pH problem, folks. And it is eating all that veg that does it (plus the cruciferous supplements if you want to speed the process along). I should add that the only reason I know about my adrenal fatigue and pH values is because my chiropractor and holistic MD did tests.

One further word of advice for anyone who tries this who is also suffering from adrenal fatigue. You might feel really exhausted, heavy-limbed and light-headed when you start the Liver Enhancement diet. Some people from the other reviews seem to have felt better straight away. You might not. For some people it might take a while. That's what happened to me. I had to add meat back in in order to make it from day to day, which is what he suggests for the adrenal/ovary types. However, I do now have much better sleep!!! and my sex drive is back, and I am amazed to say I am not craving chocolate and cookies with tea/coffee any more!! I couldn't go through a day without a chocolate and tea break. So just bear that in mind. You might think you could never stop drinking coffee or eating bread, but you might be surprised... Any way, the nice thing is, once you have reached the state of health and weight loss you want (could take a few months, don't expect instant results) you can start adding those things back into your diet again if you want - though he points out that most people are less interested in junk food once they are healthy as it is being unhealthy that makes you crave these things in the first place.

I would suggest everyone should read this book. Whether you follow the plan or not is up to you, but you should be aware of how and in what way our diet and life-style can cause us ill health and weight gain, and know there is something you can do about it if you choose to.

The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for Good (Paperback) Review

The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for GoodThe Core Balance Diet is a must-read for women who have, well...gotten off balance (which would include probably 85-95% of American women). And Marcelle (with Genevieve) include six common ways that we have lost our balance: digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammatory, and detoxification. Which of us has not experienced imbalance in one of those areas, let alone two or three?

Marcelle challenges the woman who thinks she would be too overwhelmed to make some dietary and lifestyle changes: "If you could help your partner to lose weight, or help protect your child's health, by changing what he or she ate for a month, wouldn't you try and do it? Now, aren't you worth that same amount of attention?" And she is only asking you to try her program for a month! After that, she assures you, you'll be free from your food addictions and hooked on your feeling great!

Balance, as you might suppose, also entails eating approximately a 30/30/40 ratio of healthy fats, protein and complex carbs (though not as strict as the Zone Diet). But it includes much, much more than that.

The book begins with an explanation of how imbalances lead to weight gain and aging and provides a layman's easy-to-read explanation of the systems.

Marcelle provides a Core Balance quiz for you to determine which of your systems are weakest. This is followed by a chapter on each system. Each chapter(which is delight to read even if they don't apply to you as much as the others) contains the following: information on the imbalance and how to correct it; sidebars and boxes with interesting tidbits of info; a list of "Marcelle's prescriptions " for that imbalance; diagnostic tests to note the progress of that imbalance; foods to include and foods to avoid; supplements to take; "a day in the life" schedule for the lifestyle changes needed (exercise, when to eat, self- nurturing, etc.); a one-week menu;and frequently asked questions.

There are also 60 pages of recipes. Except for the medical diagnostic tests, this is a complete do-it-yourself book.

True to the Hay House spirit, there is also a chapter on the mind-body connection with the cute title, "Your Issues Are in Your Tissues" which alerts you to negative thinking and self-destructive behavior patterns that can sabotage your health.

I have read hundreds of books on health and nutrition (even wrote one myself!) and I give this book a hearty two thumbs up! I learned lots of interesting tidbits, such as how the liver is taxed on a low-fat diet, how Vitamin D deficiency is linked to obesity, and how not flossing can lead to body-wide inflammation. The only thing Marcelle could do to make it more complete would be to have a chapter on the importance of eating more raw foods since a raw diet taxes the digestive system far less.

This is a diet that can be, with a bit of imagination, used by anyone who has any dietary slant (vegan, vegetarian, raw fooder, etc). For example, if one is raw vegan, substitute raw hemp protein powder in place of meat and don't cook the vegetables.

The Schwarzbein Principle: The Truth About Losing Weight, Being Healthy, and Feeling Younger [Paperback] Review

The Schwarzbein Principle: The Truth About Losing Weight, Being Healthy, and Feeling Younger [Paperback]Schwarzbein goes against all the current thinking on dieting.Exercise and balanced diet are good words that all doctors will tell you. From there Schwarzbein goes in a completely different direction.Count carbohydrates, not calories.Eat as much good fat and protein as your body needs.Eat 'real' food, not the processed and chemical-filled food that lines the grocery shelves.Stay away from the low-fat foods that make you feel hungry and contribute to hormonal imbalance.
After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, my doctor gave me a 1500-calorie diet. That wasn't enough food to live on.I was lucky enough to have someone recommend the Schwarzbein book.In the past eight months I have lost over 50lbs, eating food I enjoy and feeling good about it.My doctor said to keep up what ever I am doing. He was happy when I said I was eating the number of carbohydrates listed in the 1500-calorie diet.I am sleeping the entire night. My blood pressure is at 125/72, down from 149/100.I had to buy new cloths, down from size 48 pants to size 44.Hopefully I will have to buy a smaller size in the next 6 months.
Steak, bratwurst, bacon, butter, eggs, mayonnaise, and whole milk are all part of my normal diet, along with generous portions of salads.I can eat as much of these as my body wants.I make sure that I eat potatoes, bread, and whole grain cereal, but in limited portions. My blood glucose readings are in the normal range, and they agree with Schwarzbein's findings in her patient studies.
The main emphasis of the book is not on losing weight. It is about becoming healthy, enjoying eating, and enjoying a long life.It isn't necessary to immediately make all the changes listed in the book. The goal is to gradually make the changes and enjoy life.
