The Warrior Diet: Switch on Your Biological Powerhouse For High Energy, Explosive Strength, and a Leaner, Harder Body [Paperback] Review

The Warrior Diet: Switch on Your Biological Powerhouse For High Energy, Explosive Strength, and a Leaner, Harder Body [Paperback]Many years ago when I was a young man I followed a diet similar to the one recommended here by Ori Hofmekler. It wasn't something that I planned or followed with any kind of rigor.I just more or less fell into it.I would get up in the morning and have coffee and toast with peanut butter and preserves or honey.(Of course Hofmekler's "warrior diet" does not recommend bread during the "undereating" phase.)I would then go most of the rest of the day without eating anything. In the evening I would reward myself with a huge meal.Sometimes I didn't eat that meal until sometime after midnight.

I was never hungry during the undereating phase. As anyone who has ever fasted can tell you, when you have eaten nothing for a while and are burning fat, you experience no hunger. You are serene.I also maintained the same weight for many years following this habit of only eating one large meal a day.

If looked at closely it can be seen that the essence of the warrior diet is mini-fasts and the avoidance of carbohydrates, especially the processed kind.Hofmekler is not entirely rigorous in that recommendation however, allowing one to eat fresh fruits and vegetables or even some protein during the undereating or fasting phase.Notice that this diet is similar to some of the low-carbs diets currently fashionable.Note also that mini-fasting results in a period of time in which the digestive system is given a rest. With no food in the system, the body is forced to burn fat.Fat burns clean, relatively speaking, as Hofmekler explains. This is quite a change from the days when we were taught that fat was the culprit.Today we know that concentrated, processed carbohydrates and such things as corn syrup are what is making America fat and frankly sick.

In essence the warrior diet is a return to the natural diet of humans as it was (per force) practiced in the Pleistocene prior to the rise of agriculture. When one looks at such a diet, which included, small animals, insects, roots, tubers, fruits, vegetables, and the occasional large animal, it is easy to see that it was almost impossible to get fat or at any rate stay fat for any length of time. The two main foods that are making Westerners fat are readily available carbohydrates and an abundance of fats and oils.In the prehistory there were oats and wheat and barley and such, but the seeds were relatively small and to make a meal required a lot of hand processing.I have experimented with some of the natural foods found here in California, acorns, black walnuts, pine nuts, wild oats, wild grapes; and the striking thing I have discovered is just how much time and energy it requires to process these foods.Using hand tools and existing on these foods along with fish and whatever meat I could get, I could never get fat.

So what Hofmekler is recommending is a return to such a way of living.Since the foods for us are readily available with little processing, the time that would have been spent in hand processing should now be spent in fasting (which was the case in the prehistory).

There is an incredible amount of detail in this book as Hofmekler compares his diet to other diets, as he incorporates workouts, food preparation and recipes, and gets specific about all kinds of foods; but the hard kernel of truth here, in my opinion, is simply this: eat less, eat less often, exercise, and avoid denatured foods.Note that "eat less often" implies mini-fasts.Perhaps the biggest mistake we make is to eat from habit, to eat when we are not really hungry. If we always waited until we were ravenous before eating we would both enjoy the food more and be healthier.

I also like the idea of seeing oneself as something other than a couch potato, indoctrinated by corporate interests to a life of relative passivity and constant consumption. So the metaphor of "The Warrior Diet" is welcome in a marketing sense and more appealing (and sexier!) than what I think is more accurate, which is "A Hunter-Gatherer Diet."One of the reasons that Hofmekler uses the term "warrior" is to suggest in a somewhat subliminal way one of his prescriptions, that is to avoid what he considers estrogen-promoting foods such as "processed soy products...conventional produce, meats, poultry, and pork" and other foods.(See e.g., page 154, or better yet his previous book "The Anti-Estrogenic Diet" for the full story.)

By the way, I still practice a one square meal a day diet, although I must confess that I snack a little too much in-between!Hofmekler's book (incidentally in its second edition, which suggests its value) has come along just in time to inspire me to return to a more rigorous practice. This morning as I write this, 15 hours have passed since I ate anything.I am not the slightest bit hungry and this is after walking an hour in the rain and doing some chores. However I will enjoy my coffee and homemade bread soon.

Product Description:
Along with the many benefits of leisure-class living comes obesity and its attendant ailments. In The Warrior Diet, Ori Hofmekler looks not forward but backward for a solution-to the primal habits of early cultures such as nomads and hunter-gatherers, the Greeks, and the Romans. Based on survival science, this book proposes not ordinary dietary changes but rather a radical yet surprisingly simple lifestyle overhaul.

Drawing on both scientific studies and historical data, Hofmekler argues that robust health and a lean, strong body can best be achieved by mimicking the classical warrior mode of cycling-working and eating sparingly (undereating) during the day and filling up at night. Specific elements from the Warrior Diet Nutritional Program (finding ideal fuel foods and food combinations to reduce body fat) to the Controlled Fatigue Training Program (promoting strength, speed, and resilience to fatigue through special drills), literally reshape body and mind. Individual chapters cover warrior meals and recipes; sex drive, potency, and animal magnetism; as well as personalizing the diet for women. Featuring forewords by Fit for Life author Harvey Diamond and Fat That Kills author Dr. Udo Erasmus, The Warrior Diet shows readers weary of fad diets how to attain enduring vigor, explosive strength, a better appearance, and increased vitality and health.

Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody [Illustrated] (Paperback) Review

Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody [Illustrated]I've fought my weight my whole life.I've always been afraid of "fad" diets or diets that exclude one particular food.I think they are not a healthy way to lose weight.Everyone kept telling me to "eat a balanced diet" but no one explained what that meant.People talk about saturated fats, trans fats, etc and I felt like they were speaking a foreign language. My friends would count calories or carbs and would become frustrated.I didn't want to do any of that.

I bought the "Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody" when we moved and I had plenty of time for a "project".It is a 12 week program designed to get you into the habit of eating healthy. The first three weeks were a lot of work and took a lot of dedication.I had to weigh and measure everything. After the first three weeks, my eyes adjusted and were able to do the measurments without the scale and cups. Some of the recipes are a lot of prep and there is a lot of cutting of vegi's and fruits. My husband and my 2 teenage kids didn't mind the changes (except brown rice) so after the first 3 weeks "learning curve", it all worked out well.I lost 25 lbs in 12 weeks and I never even got into the exercise part. After the 12 weeks, I stopped tracking my number of servings for 3 months.I still ate the same foods and made sure I didn't eat "A LOT" or high calorie foods.I stopped losing weight but I didn't gain it all back either.I have started tracking my servings again and have started working on the exercise.I have set my goal to lose another 25 lbs in the next 12 weeks.

I agree with everyone else here that the information is presented in a way that is easy to understand and explains it all.The book gets indepth but it is presented in a way that if you don't care what "trans fat" is, you can skip that part.I've even gien this book as presents to friends and family.I bought the cookbook too but I don't like that one.

The Diet of Daniel: a 10 day diet to blessed health, weight loss, and fitness (Paperback) Review

The Diet of Daniel: a 10 day diet to blessed health, weight loss, and fitnessI was disappointed. I thought it would represent an authentic picture of the Diet of Daniel. I did not like the fact that the author lost weight by the Atkins diet which is an unsafe diet. It did not go with the theme of the book. There were some good references to Dr Weil's guide to Optimal Health. I would not recommend this book.

Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition [Paperback] Review

Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition [Paperback]Peter Glickman's "Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition" is a definite aide in doing Mr. Stanley Burrough's "Master Cleanser" program.REMEMBER that this is not a DIET but a CLEANSE.This means you only do this periodically, like yearly, for 10 days or more in a single cleanse.

THESE ARE THE MAIN THINGS TO REMEMBER:

-This is not a DIET that one can adopt. This is a TEMPORARY CLEANSE.Just as undergoing surgery is not a new way of life but a short-term treatment where you actually leave the operating table.Think of cleansing for a colonoscopy - you don't continually cleanse for the rest of your life - so don't use the excuse that this is a dangerous diet.
-This is very DIFFICULT IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW the instructions to the letter.
-The Salt Water Flush is horrible tasting but is ABSOLUTELY necessary in order to remove toxins quickly.Do it even if it is unpleasant for you.
-Buy organic.Use the products as directed. Why would you cleanse to remove toxins and simultaneously add toxins during the cleansing program!
-FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

I first tried the "Master Cleanser" diet in 2005 and then again in 2006. Both times, I only made it 3 days because I chose to do this diet on my vacation. That did not sit well with my family who wanted to go out and have nice dinners. So, I tried it this time while still working AND with the use of this book by Peter Glickman.

I highly recommend starting this on the night before starting a 3-day weekend or 3 full days off of work. This is only due to the requirement to be near a bathroom during the flushing phase after coming off of solid foods. I truly mean it when I say that you MUST be near (like 2 feet away) a bathroom the first 3 days.I started it at work and had to leave to go home since I was 50 feet away from the bathroom.

I am starting my fourth cleanse in August.During my cleanse in 2007, I made it the entire 10 days. I lost 16 pounds in these 10 days and could truly feel the detoxification. This book and Peter Glickman's book truly helped me with the symptoms that I would experience as the fast went on day to day. Peter includes a great section of questions and answers that address the majority of the issues that people have in conducting the Master Cleanser fast.

The goal is to detoxify the body to the point that one's tongue returns to a natural bright pink color, as most of us have polluted our bodies to the point that we have a whitish coating on our tongues. I did not make it until my tongue was bright pink, but I did gain the benefit of the 10 day fast. My skin became smooth and soft. My energy felt higher. My concentration was clearer in the second half of the fast.

By days 5, 6, 7, and 8, I must warn that you will definitely feel the effects of detoxification. I described it as having a "headache" over my entire body. As long as one has the Lemonade, one can satisfy any hunger. One will experience yearnings for food whenever one smells others eating.

I loan my multiple copies of the two publications "The Master Cleanser" by Stanley Burroughs and "Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition" by Peter Glickman to everyone I care about. These two books combined are truly the greatest self-healing guide that I have ever used. I highly recommend this if you are experiencing the effects of poor nutrition, such as obesity, HBP, type II diabetes, gout, etc.

This is the first book devoted exclusively to the Master Cleanse since Stanley Burroughs wrote the original book in 1976. Written in a clear, simple style, it is based on the author's coaching hundreds of people, both live and on one of the largest Internet bulletin boards. It covers the widespread nature of obesity, the body's method of handling toxins by storing them in fat cells, how to do the cleanse, what detox symptoms are, what to do about them and what pitfalls to avoid. This book also contains personal experiences from scores of people as they did the cleanse day by, what to expect, which days are the worst, how the cleanse affects women, what ingredients to buy and answers the 70 most frequently asked questions. The author, Peter Glickman, has been a chiropractic clinic director, chelation clinic director (alternative medical procedure for plugged arteries), contributing editor to an online alternative health newsletter and president of two computer software companies.
Publisher of best selling diet books prefers Glickman's LOSE WEIGHT...to Craig Claiborne's
By Thomas Lipscomb
March 23, 2008
As the publisher of the number one bestselling CRAIG CLAIBORNE GOURMET DIET, I have tried both Glickman's and Claiborne's regimes, and Glickman's works far better.
I lost 20 lbs in 10 days, and made a major alteration to my permanent diet that keeps the weight off. The diet is simple, sound, easy to master and execute and it works.
Most diets are about as complicated as IRS instructions for your tax return and one can quickly find an excuse for giving up.
Following up the diet with a sigmoidoscopy to take advantage of the newly cleared intestinal tract should be the ultimate way to detect and prevent colon and intestinal cancers.
Any book this short that is this clear and this good should be in everyone's library.
