Get Thin, Stay Thin: A Biblical Approach to Food, Eating, and Weight Management [Mass Market Paperback] Review

Get Thin, Stay Thin: A Biblical Approach to Food, Eating, and Weight Management [Mass Market Paperback]This book can change your life.It is more a Bible study/Self-Help guide that causes us to gently examine - hopefully with God's help - why we eat past full...why we hide in our weight, what might be at the root of our self-destructive behavior, and then to gracefully, gently correct it.This isn't a "diet" book. It's not about calories, exercise, and fat counting. It's a book for those of us who are beyond that. We've done all the programs, starved, binged, hated on ourselves, etc.Now we need more. It's probably not a substitute for a counselor, and it's not a quick fix, but boy it's an awesome book, well-written, compassionate, and kind.If you are looking for a boot camp method to lose weight, this isn't it.If you are bruised, broken, and about to resign yourself to a lifetime of being fat, this is for you.

The Weight of Grace: Experience the Freedom from Overeating that You Already Have (Paperback) Review

The Weight of Grace: Experience the Freedom from Overeating that You Already HaveI completed this study in the fall of 2008.For me it was the first time I've experienced God's grace in the matter of my weight.I've been so steeped in self condemnation and legalism that I never sought God or believed that He would be willing to work in this area of my life.It felt like my choices = my consequences and all I had to do was get myself under control - which should be easy enough?
But...thru this study I learned that I had many false beliefs about God and many motivations for my eating that I can to prayerfully surrender to God - in Romans it says that 'they exchanged the truth of God for a lie' - but...I can exchange the lies I've believed for the truth of God.Now I can honestly say that my focus has shifted from myself and my failings to God and compassion toward me and His Holy Spirit at work in me.
I highly recommend this book to any woman who struggles with emotional eating - not just weight issues - to be set free from the legalism of dieting and conforming to the cultural standard - and be the woman God created you to be.

Mind Over Body: The Key to Lasting Weight Loss Is All in Your Head (Hardcover) Review

Mind Over Body: The Key to Lasting Weight Loss Is All in Your HeadA self-help mind body spirit weight loss and fitness book by former Mr. France and Mr. Universe, Nordine Zouareg, Mind Over Body looks at the interconnection between what we believe and how we become. Zouareg is the fitness coach at the exclusive Miraval Life in Balance spa and resort in Arizona.

Zouareg describes how everyone can learn and implement his method for mental motivation--what he calls our `core desire'--and then learn how to master the tools (visualization, meditation, affirmation) to keep on track with weight-loss goals. After readers understand and practice these tools, they learn some of the basics about nutrition and the Miraval way of healthy living. The book comes with an exercise plan developed by the author to shed unwanted pounds. According to Mr. Zouareg, consistent use of the mind body spirit method will keep the additional weight off forever.

But to truly test any self-help weight loss book, I knew that I had to bring it into my own life. I started with the creative visualization, then the meditation, and finally the affirmations. I admit that I felt more than a little silly saying the affirmations. Being a writer, I found I did best by saying them, and then writing them down in a journal.

I then read about the basics of nutrition and the 40/40/20×5 fat loss plan, and tried some of the sample recipes that were actually quite tasty. The vegetable omelet was a big hit in my household.

On to the exercise....I'm more of a couch potato, but oddly enough I enjoyed the stretching exercises, even found them relaxing. The more strenuous exercises...well, I'm still working on those. I see this more as a slow progression, one that will hopefully develop into a good habit. So, how much weight have I lost? 4.5 pounds in ten days. Not bad for a former junk food eating couch potato.

Other links and resources are in the index.

I highly recommend this book if you are truly ready to change your life and willing to try a more holistic approach to weight loss and healthy living.

Armchair Interviews says: More than just a diet book, this combines the mind, body and spirit for weight-loss success.

Craving Hope: A Spiritual Companion on Your Weight Loss Journey [Paperback] Review

Craving Hope: A Spiritual Companion on Your Weight Loss Journey [Paperback]On her web site, Joni Woelfel explains that her work has always risen out of what she needed to learn. In the introduction to this, her sixth book, she writes of researching the spirituality of weight loss "through the lens of an investigative reporter." No question the material is well researched, but it is also presented in an organized format appropriate to the subject matter. As one would expect, Woelfel recommends using the book in conjunction with a sound program based on healthy diet and exercise. She has also included five workbook lessons for small group use.

Woelfel breaks her personal 90-day journey into 10 stages, starting with Becoming Ready. A single stage consists of nine days presented with a heading; quotation from scripture and various other sources; reflection question with space for notes; affirmation; prayer; and mantra. For example, Stage Five, Understanding Struggle, begins with a discussion of plateaus on Day 37. The day's topic, When Nothing Is Happening, opens with a quote from author Kathleen Norris who writes of the need to "wrestle" with the high plains region of the Dakotas "before it bestows a blessing." Woelfel's theme is "one of those blasé, it's-hard-to-get-up-off-the-couch type days when motivation has gone on vacation." She offers several suggestions, including visiting a friend and undertaking a craft project. The reflection question addresses physical and spiritual plans for dealing with plateaus. The daily affirmation reads: "Becoming despondent over a period where exercise and diet don't appear to be working ignores the greater reason for the journey in the first place." In her closing prayer, Woelfel asks God's help in grasping lessons and insights that arise from waiting. The daily mantra is "I will value the experience of "just being."

Woelfel's journal also reports on progress of a fascinating wall-building project inspired by her desire to "visually portray the spiritual interconnectedness we receive as we enter the fullness of God."

Joni Woelfel has been there: She's faced the dreaded scale, debated the merits of the latest fad diet, and struggled to stop the yo-yo effect of dieting. Our bodies respond to our life stories through our mind/body/spirit connection. In Craving Hope, Woelfel invites readers on a ninety-day weight loss journey through the challenges, emotions and insights she encountered on her own. Reflections include:

    It's All Connected

    When Nothing Is Happening

    Preventing Roadblocks

    Childhood Conditioning

    Weightless Grace

    Nation of Consumers

While this book is designed to be used in conjunction with a credible weight loss program, Woelfel recommends scientifically sound practices while encouraging readers to explore their relationships to food, exercise, family and God.An easy to use resource for individuals, Craving Hope is also ideal for small group use and includes discussion questions and group activity suggestions at the end of each of its five parts.

The Joy of Weight Loss (Paperback) Review

The Joy of Weight LossThis book is the real thing. The author did what few people can do, lose weight and keep it off for good. It's a whole new idea about how to get thinner. No b.s. here.Honest and simple. There's a lot about simple nutrition, but no dieting.I like it because I can eat anything, and often, all day long.Chumley doesn't make me do heavy exercise, either.I started just walking 10 to 15 minutes a day and that was enough and I could do it.Most important, this book brought me closer to God and helped me put my beliefs into action. I'm losing weight with it.Thank God. I think this book can help you too.Give it a try.I also like his website

Product Description:
On September 6, 1989 Norris Chumley was at a crossroads. At 330 pounds and rising, it was simply a matter of time before he would again tip the scales at the 400 pounds he had reached many times before. He had been on virtually every diet, and they'd all failed. He felt hopeless, and, in rare glimpses of honesty, secretly admitted he was slowly committing suicide.
The Joy of Weight Loss is the dramatic story of how Norris Chumley turned his life around. It details how Chumley came to accept his conflict about food and body image and finally looked long and hard at his weight fluctuations and diet history. Chumley shares his experiences and secrets of success-of how he discovered joy and lasting happiness, with permanent freedom from obesity.
Unlike other weight-loss or diet books, The Joy of Weight Loss is a weight-management book that offers a fresh new solution to everyone's quest for health and happiness. There are no magic pills, no starvation or binge diets. There are no crash courses or deprivations. Chumley instead counsels a sensible diet, taking pleasure in pleasurable movement rather than a punishing exercise regime, and, most importantly of all, learning to surrender yourself to a higher power and discover a true form of self-love that is at once accepting and transforming.
