Lose the Weight You Hate [Paperback] Review

Lose the Weight You Hate [Paperback]I heartily promote reading Dr. Shoemaker's books.I have read his other books as well.He is so down to earth and accurate because of his background in Chemistry.Besides reading his books, I have taken his visual test on line, which proved I had a neurotoxin mediated illness. My weight gain was due to this. Then I fought for months to finally, after 12 years, to get a positive result for Lyme infection. He was too far away to go to for the problem, but my doctor followed his protocol.I also used his little less than $10.00 eye tests to monitor my recovery and also to test the rest of my household, who fortunately had no problem.

His diet and advice are great.

Product Description:
Finally, a weight loss book that not only is enjoyable to read, but is also jam packed with "how-to-do-it" based on 20 years of clinical practice and obesity research. The No-Amylose Diet (bet you haven't tried it yet) is a fresh approach to a tired subject that usually features some variation on the wrong-headed ideas that "the way to lose weight is to cut back on calories, avoid fat and get small amounts of exercise regularly."Sorry, we have tried that approach for years and it just doesn't work.Just look at the maintenance rate for patients who use the "expert advice."Less than 10% of patients lose 30 pounds and less than 5% of that group keeps the weight off at 1 year follow-up.That advice is worthless, yet just look at the New Years' resolutions to push away from the table and go for a 30 minute jog. That's no way to lose weight! It won't work for very long.
And it can't.Fat storage is a complex process that is based on genetically controlled insulin levels and the response of insulin to the rate of rise of blood sugar following a meal. The controlling factor on insulin release isn't the number of calories we eat, but the effect of those calories on blood sugar.Foods that turn to sugar (glucose) quickly, like all amylose starches, corn syrup (low-fat foods make us fat), maltodextrins and table sugar (sucrose) set off the insulin fat storage machinery like crazy. Most of us with weight problems really aren't self-indulgent overeaters. Most of us hate our extra weight and wish we could eat like those skinny friends of ours who eat more than we do!
Lose the Weight You Hate takes us seriously, as well as our obesity related health problems.Cholesterol?Boy, have we been sold a bill of goods!Learn what really is going on with cholesterol (Chapters 10 and 11) before you swallow another statin drug that you might not need. How about the CDC talking about the national explosion of diabetes and obesity? They want us to think it is all because of our triple cheeseburgers and fries.Wrong! The chapter (14) on environmental acquisition of diabetes and obesity will knock your socks off.Learn what immune system factors, pro-inflammatory cytokines (yes, it is time to learn the medical terms), do to our insulin receptors (and therefore our insulin storage of the sugar we eat as fat).Look why our environmental exposures are the greatest threat to our waistlines. But there is hope when facts about the health effects of our changing lifestyles and our increasing use of chemicals act as a basis for improved weight control.
Even better, Chapter 13 will show you how an FDA approved medication, Avandia, currently marketed to help treat diabetes, actually is a fantastic weight loss aid in those folks with "insulin resistance."In an academic paper, featured at the 83rd Endocrine Society meetings this past June (2001), the author proves that avoiding amylose and adding Avandia gave the most difficult weight loss patients he treats a terrific boost in burning fat. Moreover, look where the ladies lost the weight-their hips! How many patients would like to lose their tummy safely, with a diet that is a new, enjoyable lifestyle not an exercise in self-torture.
Speaking of exercise, if you are like most of us, you don't have the minimum of 12 hours per week (that's right, 12 hours)to sweat off those few pounds.Quit being a masochist! If you want to exercise and have the time, great, have fun.But don't think that walking 3 miles an hour will do anything significant for a jelly roll.It just won't work. With 18 chapters, case studies and 50 enjoyable original recipes mixed in with hard science and an amusing outlook on life and weight loss, Lose the Weight You Hate is worth reading over and over again. 455 pages, index, glossary and appendices and a chapter on Childhood Obesity complete the text.

The Leptin Diet: How Fit Is Your Fat? (Take Charge) [Paperback] Review

The Leptin Diet: How Fit Is Your Fat [Paperback]If you want the correct information about leptin, this is the book you will want to read. Byron Richards is a clinical nutritionist and the only author writing about leptin that will give you the correct information; the only author that will tell you the truth. It is easy to read and the science is represented in a format that is easily understood. What you learn will turn conventional thought on its ear. Other than the new science about the discovery (in 1996), importance and function of leptin, most of the nutritional science explained has been known for decades. Richards explains it in a way your biology teacher never could. Even doctors that know this science have fallen prey to the pervasive myths about diet in this country and are not giving patients correct information to change weight and improve health. My practitioner hadn't even heard of leptin and it is one of the biggest discoveries ever, in human biology.

I purchased all three of the books on Amazon dealing with leptin. (see my other reviews) The Leptin Diet is the only book that tells you the truth about the ever important issue of snacking. Richards is incredibly thorough in explaining what happens when your body is digesting the food you just ate and how snacking disrupts that crucial process leading to leptin resistance, insulin resistance and obesity. Eating according to Byron Richards' 5 Rules will restore the natural function of your hormones (particularly leptin and insulin)and is the only way to take weight off and keep it off. Don't be mislead by the title. This actually isn't a diet as we are all used to interpreting that word, but is actually the way all humans ought to be eating. I've tried many diets (the reason my leptin was out of whack) including Weight Watchers. I always lost weight but had cravings for sweets and carbs while dieting that continually derailed the effort and made it especially hard to keep off the pounds lost. Richards explains why this happens with dieting and why, when you lose weight following the 5 Rules, your body is forever rid of cravings and your weight will stablize for life. Following the 5 Rules is an easy way to eat: three meals a day, no snacking, and not eating after dinner are three of the rules that turn people off right away. I know what you're thinking as you read this---I can't do that, I need my snacks to get me through the day and at night to help me sleep. My reaction was the same and I argued with a friend recommending this book why it was necessary to eat every 3 hours which is what we've all been taught since the late 70's. When my friend told me about the 5 Rules, one being to allow 5-6 hours between meals, I knew, immediately, I could not do it. Well, I proved myself wrong.

After the first 2 days, I could easily go 5 hours between meals and be satisfied. I now eat 3 meals a day eating whatever I like with the correct portions of protein and complex carbs. Remember when Americans used to eat like this? I'm 50 years old and when I was a kid we ate this way, running outside to play between meals. Our bodies were doing the work of digestion and calorie burning while we went about the business of living. I no longer snack between meals nor do I need a snack at night. In fact, the problem I have had with insomnia since college is gone. I had very little energy to get through a single day before reading this book. Now, I have more energy than I know what to do with, I no longer crave sugar and simple carbohydrates, I no longer need a nap every afternoon, and I am losing weight every day. The changes have been pretty dramatic for my friends, as well. If someone told me a few months ago that I would drink my coffee without sweetner or turn down dessert because it sounded too sweet, I would have told them flat out that they, obviously, didn't know anything about me. I think the biggest example of change that says it all for me was the day I realized that the chocolate bar on the kitchen counter had been there for a week without me really paying attention to it. The changes sneak up on you just like that as your body enjoys the changes you have made.

I predict The Leptin Diet will become the revelation this culture needs to face up the fact that we are not being given correct information from our government or the media. Snack food companies have a lot to lose if we all stop eating between meals. Snacking has become a national obsession and the advertising by these companies perpetuate it. Moreso, EATING has become a national obsession, not the natural bodily need it used to be. The human body isn't designed to be ingesting food all day. Richards will explain to you why the myth of eating 6 small meals a day is completely unhealthy. If you love your potato chips and cookies, you can choose to eat them as part of your meal, but you will probably find yourself disinterested in them after your body is back in hormonal balance. I know you have probably heard this before, but this book truly changed my life. Every human body needs this book.

The Rosedale Diet [Paperback] Review

The Rosedale Diet [Paperback]I ate6 months successfully according to the South Beach Diet (lost 10 kilograms and lots of fat), but suddenly I started to gain wait again, so I tried Phase 1 of Atkins, which worsened my situation; UNTIL I discovered and read the book of Rosedale; he explains why you should eat moderate quantities of protein (which I didn't do of course in Atkins Phase 1 ) ànd you should be careful with "normal" meat, because saturated fat cause a raise in leptin, which causes you to become fatter ànd you should eat LOTS of GOOD fats!! So I started to eat more fish, lots of olives and avocado's, lots of olive oil, nuts and less protein, and miracle oh miracle, I immediately lost fat and weight on the right places, WITHOUT any effort :-))

The key is leptin and Rosedale explain very well what leptin is, which type of food raises your leptin level, why that damages your health and even more important, he explains what you should and shouldn't eat in order to get your leptin in control again, with that comes weight and fat loss VERY EASILY

The Leptin Boost Diet: Unleash Your Fat-Controlling Hormones for Maximum Weight Loss (Paperback) Review

The Leptin Boost Diet: Unleash Your Fat-Controlling Hormones for Maximum Weight LossThe Leptin Boost Diet is the best eating plan I have ever followed. I have struggled with my weight all my life. Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to follow this plan. I lost 13 pounds the first week. For the first time in my life on an eating plan, I am not craving sweets or anything else. I am satisfied and know if I want to eat then I can. I select healthy foods and get to enjoy a variety of things to eat. I have been on all these eating plans that make me feel as though there is nothing to eat or food doesn't get to taste good. The Leptin Boost Diet incorporates a variety of foods and doesn't leave you craving. I have been in the obese category my whole life. I am pre-diabetic and when I follow this plan my blood sugar drops out of this category. I do need to watch my portions on fruit, but; I get to enjoy fruit again and significant amounts of it. For the first time in along time, I have hope. I can lose weight and enjoy food again. This plan isn't an extreme crazy concept someone decided to write about. On the contrary, the plan is balanced and incorporates healthy foods that every doctor and nutritionist recommends eating. I have had acne since seventh grade and use many products to help manage it. Since following this plan, my skin has never been so clear, and my skin looks ten years younger. I am a thirty eight year old mom of four. I haven't been on the plan for a long time but I want to see where this can take me. I no longer feel that I need to get a gastric bypass dealing with the negative affects of it, or possibly losing my life. My mood even changed. I didn't notice at first but I went off the plan for four days. I thought that time of month was coming because I was so emotinal. I went back on the plan and noticed my mood changed drastically. I didn't have that time of month my hormones were out of wack. I wasn't eating right. I have had a hard time with water retention that at times is uncomfortable. Following the plan has taken the excess water out of me. I no longer suffer with swelling and the stiffness that comes with it. The people who wrote the other reviews don't even sound like the followed The Leptin Boost Diet. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but don't knock something you haven't tried. The Leptin Boost Diet works! I am one who followed it! I look forward to the time to reshape my body for the first time. I lost 3 3/4" off my waist and 3 3/4" off my stomach all in one week. What a great book!

Product Description:
A series of recent medical breakthroughs have confirmed what physicians suspected all along - obesity is a hormonal disorder. The Leptin Boost Diet transforms these findings into a unique and easy-to-follow weight-loss program that is perfect for people whose out-of-balance hormones make it impossible to lose weight on other diets. The book shows how to optimize leptin and other fat cell hormones so that the body's natural chemistry becomes an ally, instead of a barrier, in the fight against fat. Dr. Scott Isaacs, an expert in the field, clearly explains complex topics relating to the newest medical treatments, the endocrinology of fat cell hormones, identifying leptin deficiency, and improving the action of leptin in the body. His program includes clear and concise recommendations on nutrition, physical activity and vitamin and supplement intake. By boosting the body's leptin levels, the plan produces positive effects - including appetite reduction and increased energy level, and long-term benefits like reduced body fat and a healthy metabolism - right away.

Mastering Leptin: Your Guide to Permanent Weight Loss and Optimum Health (Third Edition) (Paperback) Review

Mastering Leptin: Your Guide to Permanent Weight Loss and Optimum HealthI was impressed with the fact that this husband and wife team,in their early 50's, is so committed to bringing us the latest breaking news on leptin and the research related to solving obesity in this country. Their book (now the 2nd edition) explains why leptin is the key hormone that regulates all other hormones in the body, and how leptin imbalance is the precursor to heart disease, thyroid conditions, and cancer. The information is not their opinions, but rather a compilation of ALL scientific data on leptin to date, presented in a fairly easy-to-follow writing style. They give special guidelines for correcting leptin imbalances, including the use of certain supplements, which in turn will lead to correction of a host of other imbalances, like insulin resistance. (As an aside, insulin resistance alone affects 50% of our country's population, contributing hugely to the obesity epidemic.)

I agree that the book is a bit choppy. I think a professional writer could have helped smooth out the rough edges. However, the content is exceptional. I have recently discovered that I am a borderline diabetic with a low-functioning thyroid and insulin resistance, which likely developed as a result of my last pregnancy. Prior to that I had no apparent problems in these areas. This book helps to explain how this happened and is guiding me back to healthy. I am indebted to these authors.

I have also read the Rosedale Diet, which I think is also very good. However, I believe Mastering Leptin explains leptin and all its implications more completely. Mastering Leptin also explains the wisdom in waiting 5 hours between meals and avoiding snacks, and how that is critical to bringing leptin in line. Dr. Rosedale includes snacks in his book, focusing more on the types of foods to eat rather than on scheduling to allow your body to restore its natural rhythm. Eating all the time keeps our bodies too focused on digestion and keeps our insulin levels up. I'd go to the Rosedale Diet for the recipes but to the Mastering Leptin book for the guidance. Good luck to you all.
