The Bonus Years Diet: 7 Miracle Foods Including Chocolate, Red Wine, and Nuts That Can Add 6.4 Yearson Average to Your Life [Bargain Price] [Hardcover] Review

The Bonus Years Diet: 7 Miracle Foods Including Chocolate, Red Wine, and Nuts That Can Add 6.4 Yearson Average to Your Life [Hardcover]Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.

Product Description:
A rigorous analysis of dramatic studies on the therapeutic power of nutrition has led Dr. Oscar H. Franco and a team of acclaimed researchers to determine that substituting certain foods in place...of the leading medical "cocktail" for preventing cardiovascular disease yields identical benefits. As reported in the British Medical Journal, they concluded that daily consumption of seven specific foods could result, on average, in an increase in total life expectancy of 6.6 years for men and 4.8 years for women.
Dr. Ralph Felder, a physician and a master-trained chef, has now taken these groundbreaking studies out of the laboratory and put them into the kitchen. Using his inspired yet easy-toprepare recipes and creative menu plans, along with a few simple lifestyle guidelines, anyone can add healthy years to his or her life, enjoy-with few restrictions-a wide range of delicious and satisfying foods, and lose weight safely and easily, while indulging in goodies like chocolate and nuts.

The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever! [Bargain Price] (Paperback) Review

The Eat-Clean Diet: Fast Fat-Loss that lasts Forever [Bargain Price]Most of this book's recommendations are familiar to me now that I've been reading and experimenting with healthy cookbooks for a while. It's a bit more stringent on the no-fat requirement than I'm used to, but it's all about good carbs, good fats, and combining carbs with lean protein to keep us feeling full. Where Agatston's South Beach Diet recommends three meals with careful snacking between, Ms. Reno replaces that with five or six small meals spaced throughout the day.

So what's new? What makes The Eat-Clean Diet a worthwhile addition to the stacks of diet books and healthy eating books already out there?

For one, it includes great lists of pantry goods, produce, etc. with which to fill your cupboards and refrigerator. It makes it easier to get into the swing of having enough yummy, healthy food around to keep you full and satisfied. For those people who don't yet understand all the information out there on processed sugars, saturated fats, etc., it introduces those concepts in nice, easy language aimed at your average person.

Tosca's cheerleading excitement and enthusiasm, while a bit jarring at first if you aren't into that sort of thing, is actually pretty infectious after a while, perhaps because it's tempered with helpful information as well as personal experience and doesn't feel empty.

About a third of the way into the book I realized why the book cover so closely resembles fad diet books. Tosca includes several stories of people approaching her wanting to know her "secret" to looking incredibly fit over 40 (lest you think she's one of those easily-skinny people, she lost the weight by getting fit and changing her eating habits just like the rest of us need to). These people inevitably believe there's some sort of magic pill, or a particular food they should eat or avoid (ie, a fad diet they should follow), and have difficulty believing the key is simply to eat the right foods.

Given her loathing of fad diets, I believe she deliberately wanted the book designed so that all these people who are looking for quick answers would pick up her book instead, and finally hear the things they really need to hear. After all, the people she most wants to reach are those who have been misled into thinking that fad diets are good.

One of the things that sets this book apart is the recipes. I admit that while her ideas are great, I found myself dubiously eying the pictured plates of raw veggies with no dressing and the like. I was afraid that her recipes would be similar---healthy, but lacking in any real appealing flavor.

Then we tried a recipe for parchment-baked fish that was absolutelydelicious! The flavors came together perfectly in one of those recipes that's somehow more than the sum of its parts. (And I'm not the biggest fish fan in the world, particularly white-fleshed fish.) While this book doesn't include a huge number of recipes, it certainly gives you plenty of ideas, and it also includes two full-week menus from morning to night to get you started.

The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique! [Paperback] Review

The Eat-Clean Diet for Men: Your Ironclad Plan for a Lean Physique [Paperback]This book has worked wonders for me! Since beginning this "lifestyle change" (not really a diet), I have already lost 23 pounds so far and am losing about 2 pounds per week. Of course I exercise as well, but I had been exercising the same way before and was not losing weight. This lifestyle change has had a positive effect on my entire family. My wife, who was already petite, looks even better and my 14 year old daughter has lost 10 lbs! The whole family had bought in. We are enjoying coming up with new recipes and we spend more time cooking and eating together.

Another unintended consequence of this lifestyle change is that it has saved us money! We used to eat out quite a bit. We would spend nearly $700 per month eating at restaurants and fast foods!! Trust me, it's not hard to do if you eat out 2-3 times per week with an average ticket of $50-$60. So far this month (through August 23rd), we've spent just $32 on dining out! Last month, we spent $74! We are saving over $600 a month because we cook at home instead of eating out. Unbelievably, we are also spending less on groceries. I am very surprised by this because I, like most people, thought that clean (healthier) foods would cost a lot more. Well, that's not true! You would be surprised as to how much unclean foods in the grocery cart add up. Chips, soda, frozen pizza & beer = $$$$$. Now that we don't buy those foods and very little alcohol (only wine occasionally), we spend a lot less on groceries overall and have more to spend on lean meats, vegetables and fruit.

I highly recommend this book! It has changed out lives for the better!

The Eat-Clean Diet for Family and Kids: Simple Strategies for Lasting Health and Fitness [Paperback] Review

The Eat-Clean Diet for Family and Kids: Simple Strategies for Lasting Health and Fitness [Paperback]I'm a big Tosca Fan! Maybe I had the wrong idea, but I thought this was more of the 'Clean Eating Diet Cookbook'directed toward creating meals with your children and still being healthy. It actually resembles 'The Clean Eating Diet,' with it's Half guidance, Half recipes format. Both have recipes in them not included in her other books. She also has great recipes in 'The Butt Book' (we love to create the soups especially).I own them all and have tried many recipes from each. The Family edition is 327 pages not including the index. pgs 200-327 are recipes and a large picture page (so about 63 recipes). There are of course some recipes my son (8) is ready to try like mac and cheese, chicken 'nuggets,' and the 'fish sticks,' and some I'm ready to try like the 'baked ziti.'
Now she just needs to come out with a recipe group for the series. I'll buy that, too.
Only 4 stars because I wanted more recipes and less chat.

We have been hearing for years now about the obesity epidemic and other health issues facing children. In fact, the longevity trend is reversing with this generation - children born today are not expected to live as long as their parents. In The Eat-Clean Diet for Family and Kids, author Tosca Reno handles this issue with typical aplomb.

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged!: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever! [Paperback] Review

The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged: Lasting Fat Loss That's Better than Ever [Paperback]I purchased the original _Eat-Clean Diet_ book when it came out a few years ago, and used the principles in it to lose sixteen pounds (two dress sizes).Recently, I've been a little more lax in my eating, so I purchased this book last week to help motivate me to get back on track with my eating for the new year.

Before purchasing this newer edition, I was worried that it would be very similar to the first version of the book, but, as Reno explains, it contains over 100 pages of new text. While there are some chapters that are similar in both books (like chapters on the importance of drinking water and eating breakfast), there are a lot of new ideas. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase the older, original edition of this book or this one, I would recommend buying this one since it contains more recent information about nutritional studies. If, like me, you already own the original book, I think you'll still find the ideas in here useful and inspirational.

I find Reno to be very motivating, and, if you're struggling to lose weight, you will probably find her books really helpful. The idea behind clean eating is that you eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, without adding in extra sugar, chemicals, etc.Eating six meals a day ensures that you never go hungry, and you don't have to worry about calorie counting.

Another great feature of this book is that she includes a vegan meal plan in it.The first edition was very centered around meat, which made it difficult for me (as a lacto-ovo vegetarian) to see how I could incorporate all of her suggestions since I wasn't about to gnaw on a chicken breast as my morning snack.

Reno also focuses much more in this edition on the environmental effects that our food choices have, citing Michael Pollan's work and the principles of films like _Food, Inc._.Since I am concerned with environmental issues, I really liked this new focus on eating locally and sustainably.

This book also contains 50 new recipes.I have not tried any of them yet, but will be sure to update my review after I have tried a few.The inclusion of quite a few vegetarian recipes is another nice feature.

I first discovered Reno in _Oxygen_ fitness magazine, where she is a monthly columnist, and last year was happy to see that Robert Kennedy Publishing (the group that publishes Reno's book and _Oxygen_) began a new magazine called _Clean Eating_.If you want even more seasonal, healthy recipes and nutrition tips, I definitely recommend subscribing to it.Just be warned, however, that it contains a lot of ads promoting Reno's books -- to an annoying degree. If you can look past those ads, it makes a nice addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.
UPDATE ON 3/1/10:I've made a few of the recipes, and all of them have turned out to be really good!In my original review, I accidentally said that the book has over 15 new recipes, but it actually has 50 new ones.If you have the original version of this, you definitely don't *need* this newer version, but the updates and success stories make it a nice addition to my collection of health books.

Squeaky Gourmet: Simple. Clean. Food. [Paperback] Review

Squeaky Gourmet: Simple. Clean. Food. [Paperback]When I first received this cookbook, I was very disappointed. From the reviews and the author's website, I had the impression that there would be a picture for each recipe. This is not true; there are few pictures.I thought that it was a bit overpriced for the fact that is it not hardcover. The first recipe I tried had a typo (Southwestern Burgers).I was disappointed when I was flipping through the recipes because none of that really got me excited to try them.

Nonetheless, I tried them anyway and everything I've tried has been delicious.Although the recipes are VERY simple, they are delicious.I thought they would be too boring because there are so little ingredients required, but this is not the case.If price is not an issue for you, I would purchase this cookbook.
