Safe Dieting for Teens [Paperback] Review

Safe Dieting for Teens [Paperback]Better than most of the genre, this well-rounded, conversational book will at the very least have teens thinking about their food choices. Fairly accurate information is presented on diet choices, the importance of exercise, diet balance, and fast food choices. Missing are more complete nutritional advice (beyond recommendations to get a general number of servings of food and vegetables a day), specific portion recommendations, and any discussion of how the body digests nutrients and stores energy. Inaccuracies and inconsistencies include the author's misunderstanding of the difference between nutrisweet and sucralose, and a switch in language from telling readers that there are no bad foods to a "Restaurant Food Guide" which lists foods "usually not okay (a better choice might have been "eat in moderation" or "higher in calories per portion").

Still, overall, the messages that getting up and moving is a big part of the weight loss battle, that moderation and mindfulness are the keys to success, and that self-esteem and looks are separate concepts make this a winner for teenagers concerned about overweight.

Sadly, in this genre a book can be considered good if it simply offers no harmful advice. Here is a volume several steps above that, and worth reading. This book, with positive advice and a far-reaching outlook, can help many young people if they read it, carefully consider the contents and ideas, and put the suggestions into place in their lives.

Weight Loss Confidential Journal: Week-by-Week Success Strategies for Teens from Teens [Hardcover] Review

Weight Loss Confidential Journal: Week-by-Week Success Strategies for Teens from Teens [Hardcover]What I find so amazing about this companion guide to Weight Loss Confidential is that it is truly a complete and self-contained program that provides teens the essential tools to manage their weight - once and for all!

Fletcher drives home the point that for teens to manage their weight successfully, they must adopt a plan that is individualized and right for them - no more 'cookie-cutter' programs! But she also reinforces that regardless of the approach, the bones of any successful program still involves a life-long commitment to healthy food choices coupled with a do-able physical activity program that teens can live with.

The real jewel in Weight Loss Confidential Journal is not only do teens benefit from the wisdom of an expert nutritionist who has "been there" with her own son's weight battles, but they also benefit from the in-the-trenches wisdom of their peers. Cap it all off with some awesome, simple and teen-focused recipes and meal plans, Weight Loss Confidential Journal provides a recipe for success that teens and their parents cane really sink their teeth into! The Sierras Weight-Loss Solution for Teens and Kids: A Scientifically Based Program from the Highly Acclaimed Weight-Loss School (Paperback) Review

The Sierras Weight-Loss Solution for Teens and Kids: A Scientifically Based Program from the Highly Acclaimed Weight-Loss SchoolTwo things - Firstly and most importantly my son and my husband were happy with the dinners and both lost weight easily (I didn't and I'm still not sure why,but they definitely did)
but secondly - I had to find 15 extra minutes every morning for the cooking (and cleaning and putting away)and some of the breakfasts did not work at all. The candied apple was just awful, but the egg on an english muffin is great and everyone is happy to eat that.

The low fat regime works, and it's very boy/man friendly. As a woman,I wanted more salads (they've finally brainwashed me into wanting and then missing them!) and as the cook I would have liked less labor intensive recipes, esp for the morning but the most important thing is the results and they are absolutely there.

Weight Loss Confidential: How Teens Lose Weight and Keep It Off -- and What They Wish Parents Knew [Paperback] Review

Weight Loss Confidential: How Teens Lose Weight and Keep It Off -- and What They Wish Parents Knew [Paperback]What a great book.I think it's great for anyone, but especially for parents and teens and parents of teens.
Ann Fletcher has already written a series of books before on adults who had lost weight and kept it off, and thinking how motivating it is to read about other peoples success, she wrote this in hopes of helping teens and their families to help fight the obesity crisis and help teens who struggle daily with their weight. She is a registered dietitian and she is very smart and has written this really well. Her own son has had his share of weight problems and that was some of the driving force for her to begin this book.
She interviews over 100 teens who have lost weight in healthy ways, who have shown that sensible stratagies work and so hopefully this will stop others losing weight in a dangerous fashion. She interviews some of the parents too so it's good to get perspective from all sides. The top stratagy that helped these teens was exercise; this helped them to be able to still join their friends when they go out and feel that they could still eat what their friends did, but not feel so guilty. The other top stratagies she heard about while interviewing them was cutting back on their sodas and some unhealthful snacks.
Overall, this book is full of inspiring kids who have begun to turn their life and health around. While they may not have come up with any new secrets in the battle of weight loss, they will hopefully show other kids that it can be done and that it can be done in a healthy manner and I really think this book should be read by everyone. It's fantastic and I highly recommend it.
